Science springs forward at annual Lake Tahoe family Expo

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center, the Tahoe Expedition Academy, other community partners, and with sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline, will host the eighth annual Science Expo on March 18 - 21, 2013 for students from the region.

The Science Expo is open to the general public on the evening of Wednesday, March 20 from 4 – 6 p.m. for children of all ages together with their families at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village. Ice cream will be provided by Susie Scoops of Incline Village. Admission is free.

Lake Tahoe Community College Nordic Center to open March 1

The new Lake Tahoe Community College Nordic Center is scheduled to open Friday, March 1. Season passes will go on sale Friday.
“We believe an additional two weeks of winter will potentially improve course conditions offering the best experience for participants,” said Megan Waskiewicz, LTCC Community Education program director, in a news release.
Nordic Center passes are available online at www.ltcc.edu/communityeducation, in person at the LTCC campus CONNECT Community Education office (B107A) on, Mon-Fri 10-2p.m., or over the phone at 530-541-4660 ext. 717.

Barton Memorial Hospital 'Officially' cuts ribbon after 50 years in South Lake Tahoe

Nearly 50 years ago, on Nov. 23 1963, Barton Memorial Hospital opened its doors in South Lake Tahoe and on Thursday, Jan. 24, Barton Memorial Hospital held an “official” ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate 50 years of service to the community. The event included a speech by the great-grandchild of Bill Barton, the namesake of the hospital and current member of Barton Health’s Board of Directors, Kirk Ledbetter.

South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot Race Results

The City of South Lake Tahoe held the 2012 Turkey Trot Fun Run last Saturday, November 17th at the Parks and Recreation facility. The Fun Run was a free event for children ages 3-13 and every participant was a winner of either a turkey, pumpkin pie or swim pass. Thank you to the many local volunteers who pitched in to make this event a success, including Raley’s for their generous donation of all the turkeys and pies ad well as the Optimist Club for their continued support of this annual event.

The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to remind the community that the 2012 Turkey Trot Fun Run is being held this Saturday, November 17th at the Parks and Recreation facility at 11am. The Fun Run is a free event for children ages 3-13 and every participant will win a prize. We would also like to thank the many local volunteers, including Raley’s and Optimist Club for their support of this annual local event.

Raley’s has generously donated all of the turkeys and pies as the awarded prizes to Turkey Trot Fun Run winners.

Snow safety outreach program focuses South Lake Tahoe youth

The City of South Lake Tahoe’s Public Works Snow Removal Operation visited Sierra House Elementary Schools kindergarten and first grade classes to promote snow safety today. Street Supervisor Azril Kalik shared important safety reminders to Ms. Wilson and Ms. Tabor’s first graders.

“When you see the snow removal machines in your neighborhood, it’s important to go inside and play to remain safe. Remember to keep toys, sleds, shovels and your pets out of the road so they do not get damaged,” said Kalik.

Minden elementary school students get hands-on education at Barton 


"I hope one-day that I'll be able to use the da Vinci again," said one fourth-grader from Grace Christian Academy in Minden, Nev. One-day he just may. 

Parents and teachers of the 18 little visitors who drove from Minden on Thursday managed to keep third and fourth graders in-line during a two-hour tour at Barton Memorial Hospital. With wide open eyes, the questions soared and the excitement was building just before they made their first stop to the operating room.

Ernie's Coffee Shop will hold a fundraising dinner on Friday, Nov. 9 from 5-8 pm for Chris Alper. Chris, a 33 year South Lake Tahoe local, was recently diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer. Two surgeries last month have left her in need of assistance with medical bills and living expenses during her recuperation and treatment.
