Column: Ease your transition into menopause

Event Date:

Column: Meet the experts on your care team

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, there is currently a shortage of physicians in the United States – a shortfall that can be as high as 104,000 doctors by 2030. This issue, as well as an aging population, is changing health care and the necessity to increase providers to meet the needs of patients and expand access.

Barton is committed to providing our community with the care they need when they need it. We are expanding access to care by adding new experts throughout our healthcare system to work alongside Barton doctors.

Luckily, in Tahoe, we have access to a care team that understands the importance of performing at the highest level.

Column: Beat the summertime heat for your heart

Summertime living is easy—but for your heart, and with Tahoe daytime temperatures nearing 100 degrees lately, the warmest season of the year can be a challenge.

Dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke can be a concern for people with heart trouble—especially heart failure. That’s because your heart may have difficulty pumping blood to your skin, where heat is released. Sweating helps you cool off, but your medication may make it harder to sweat, too.

As the thermometer remains high, keep these tips in mind for heart-healthy living this summer.

Column: Spot signs of concussion

A concussion is a type of TBI caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth, as in whiplash. Even what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious if it causes a concussion.

Kids who play contact sports are often at risk for concussion, which can put sports—and life—on hold. Concussions can cause a range of short- and long-term problems, and they can affect thinking and memory, vision, balance, language, and emotions.

Column: Update on COVID-19 and the Delta Variant

Column: Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries

Shoulder pain is often related to rotator cuff injuries. The rotator cuff stabilizes the ball of the shoulder joint in the socket and is involved with daily shoulder movements. Repetitive lifting and/ or sporting activities can cause injury to the rotator cuff, or it may degenerate as a person ages without a specific trauma/ injury.

Column: Five facts you may not know about skin cancer

Your skin has many important jobs, such as protecting your body, helping to maintain your temperature, and generating vitamin D. Yet sometimes your skin doesn’t get the care and protection it needs.

While some sun exposure helps the body make vitamin D and improve your mood, more than a small amount can damage skin cells and lead to skin cancer.

Consider these lesser known facts about skin cancer:

Column: Don’t let alcohol ruin your summer fun

Summer in Tahoe is a perfect setting for outdoor activities with family and friends. For some, drinking alcoholic beverages is part of the fun-in-the-sun experience. But excessive alcohol consumption and summer activities don’t mix.

According to the CDC, alcohol relates to 70% of water recreation deaths and 48% of pedestrian fatalities. Alcohol decreases inhibition and impairs mental and physical capabilities, judgement, balance, and vision. It decreases reaction time and increases fatigue. Alcohol can lead to tragic consequences on the water, on the road and in the outdoors.

Column: Preserving vitality for men

Women, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, are 33 percent more likely than men to visit a doctor, and 100 percent more likely to have an annual exam. Considering most serious issues like diabetes and prostate cancer can be avoided by early detection and lifestyle management, it’s important for men to participate in general screenings to identify issues needing attention early on.
