Tahoe casinos "win" figure $19.4 million in October

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,315,114,434 for October 2023, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released Thursday. This amounts to a 2.69 percent increase compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,280,702,499. For the fiscal year to date, the gaming win has increased by 2.85 percent with $5,198,575,459 in "win".
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

New local hockey team name revealed - Tahoe Knight Monsters

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The much-anticipated name for the new ECHL hockey team making its home at the Tahoe Blue Event Center was announced Thursday night in front of over 1,000 enthusiastic local fans. The Tahoe Knight Monsters will start playing at the new center in October 2024.
The team's colors are teal, gold, and black, and the event center was decorated in those colors and the Knight Monsters team name and logo are portrayed by a dragon-like creature that resides and rules Lake Tahoe.
USFS issues new food and refuse storage order for Lake Tahoe Basin in 2024

TRPA opening 2023 Tahoe Mooring Lottery on December 1

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Entries into the annual new mooring lottery can be submitted by lakefront property owners starting December 1. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) conducts the drawing which is allowed under the Lake Tahoe Shoreline Plan.
The TRPA said they will conduct a mooring lottery until all allocations are distributed.
The Shoreline Plan, approved in 2018, places a cap on the total number of moorings and piers allowed in the Tahoe Region and establishes an annual lottery system to allocate a limited number of new moorings.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – After taking a break from burning during the week of Thanksgiving, Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) members are scheduled to resume prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe, conditions and weather permitting. Smoke from these operations may be present throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Scheduled fire operations and updates of those not being ignited:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you think it's been colder than usual this past week, you're right. Temperatures have been below normal, and these will continue through the week. While the start of the week will be dry, things are looking more interesting from midweek onward as several weak systems move through the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
While none of these will be major storms, anticipate periods of snow and travel difficulties. Exactly how much snow though, is the question until the systems get closer.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All night meetings of the South Lake Tahoe City Council must end at 10 p.m. unless voted on unanimously by the council members to go late. During their November 21 meeting, an extra-long consent agenda discussion pushed the final agenda item, a vote on proposed cannabis ordinance changes up to 10 p.m. without a vote.

South Lake Tahoe Rite Aid closing December 10

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When the Rite Aid corporation announced a restructuring in October, a list was published of store locations that would close. At that time there were 31 California stores on the closure list and South Lake Tahoe was not one of them.
A notice went up this week at the South Lake Tahoe store on Al Tahoe Boulevard that the local location would be closing on December 10. All prescriptions on file will be sent to the CVS store at Bijou unless the customer would like them sent elsewhere. In that case, contact Rite Aid.
California State Park Adventure Pass for all 4th graders opens up 54 parks for free exploring

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, California State Parks, in partnership with First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and the California Natural Resources Agency, is expanding its popular California State Park Adventure Pass from 19 select state parks to 54. The pilot program, currently in its third year, allows California fourth graders and fourth-grade teachers free admission to participating parks until Aug. 31, 2024. The public can find a park near them at parks.ca.gov/AdventurePass.
Lake Tahoe fire safety - Always use ash cans and ash disposal dumpsters to prevent fires

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - As a way to prevent home fires caused by irresponsibly discarded ashes from fireplace (both indoor and outdoor) and woodburning stoves, local fire departments are offering ash cans, free of charge, as well as locations for free ash disposal.
Too often a garbage bag filled with warm ashes is placed on a wooden deck or near a home after being removed from a stove or fireplace, causing a fire. If the bag survived a night or two on the deck, warm ashes picked up by the refuse company on trash day can cause fires inside the trucks.
Drink Tahoe Tap map shows water bottle refill stations around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In just five months there will be a single-use plastic water bottle ban in South Lake Tahoe, and to prepare for the change, Take Care Tahoe has released a new Drink Tahoe Tap Map that lists locations where people can freely fill up their reusable water bottles.
This new resource is meant to help people make the transition to reusable water bottles instead of using the plastic water bottles that clutter landfills, and show up repeatedly scattered around Lake Tahoe trails and beaches.
City Council to consider changes to South Lake Tahoe cannabis ordinance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2022, the South Lake Tahoe City Council considered a change to the local cannabis ordinance that would allow on-site consumption at the four permitted retail businesses in town. At the time, they expressed concerns about allowing onsite consumption as there were no robust alternative transportation options available for customers who may become impaired, and there were no measurable limits for testing cannabis impairment while driving, unlike alcohol.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The day Vail Resorts announced a delay in opening their two Lake Tahoe resorts due to warm temperatures, a weather system came through and dropped much-needed snow on the slopes and dropping temperatures making it more conducive to snowmaking.
Heavenly Mountain Resort will now open on Tuesday, November 21, with Northstar California to follow on Thursday, November 23. Kirkwood Mountain Resort is still scheduled for a December 1 opening date, conditions permitting.
City Council to vote on spending $107K to poll public on TOT increase

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council will be taking steps at its meeting Tuesday to add a November 2024 ballot measure to become a charter city and raise the tourist accommodation tax (TOT) by another two percent.
On the agenda this week is an item to hire a polling firm for $107,500 to poll the public on a TOT increase of two percent and moving to a charter city status with a focus on adding a real estate transfer tax. If approved, the firm of Lew Edwards Group would be hired to provide consulting and outreach services for a possible ballot measure.

Sheriff's office responds to bomb threats at two El Dorado County schools

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) responded to two bomb threats made at schools on Friday.
At 7:56 a.m., EDSO received reports of a bomb threat to Providence Christian School located in Shingle Springs. The school received the bomb threat via email. EDSO deputies and school resource officers evacuated all school staff and students at the school. Out of an abundance of caution, the officers and deputies conducted a systematic search of the campus for dangerous devices, but nothing suspicious or out of the ordinary was located.
Winter Weather Advisory in place for upper elevations around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for elevations above 6,500 ft from 4 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday.
Snow is expected above 6500 feet with total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, up to 8 inches above 7000 feet, and up to 1 to 2 feet above 8000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph, with ridge top gusts up to 95 mph.
The advisory is in place from 4 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday.
Plan on slippery road conditions. Strong winds could cause tree damage and blowing snow.
New public health officer for El Dorado County is physician, inventor, author, and decorated federal official

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Dr. Matthew Minson was appointed the county’s public health officer and local registrar for vital statistics during the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.
The board unanimously approved Dr. Minson to fill the position left vacant by Dr. Nancy Williams who retired in June.
SR88 to close on Friday as Caltrans crews blowup boulders that fell overnight

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is working on SR88 between Crystal Springs Road and Deep Canyon due to two borders falling on the roadway overnight.
Emergency traffic controls went into effect at 8 a.m. Friday and motorists may be experiencing delays. Caltrans will temporarily close SR88 from Crystal Springs Road to Deep Canyon at 1:15 p.m. so maintenance crews can perform blasting and cleanup operations to remove the boulders from the roadway.
This full road closure is expected to remain in effect for 30 to 45 minutes.
Ricky Newberry returns to Kirkwood Mountain Resort as VP/GM

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Kirkwood Mountain Resort has announced Ricky Newberry as its new vice president and general manager effective November 20. Newberry has been serving as vice president of mountain operations at Heavenly Mountain Resort since 2021 and started his career at Kirkwood in 1999 on ski patrol.
With more than 20 years of industry experience amassed in South Lake Tahoe, Newberry brings an acute understanding of complex mountain operations to Kirkwood. Since his ski patrol days, Newberry has remained focused on mountain operations and safety.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department and ABC arrest two for furnishing alcohol to minors

NDOT no longer considering incorporating lane reductions on US50 project

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Plans by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to create a road diet along US50 between Stateline and SR28 have been changed after the Transportation Board's meeting this week. Plans for reducing the four lanes to three lanes, with middle turn lanes and bike lanes to address safety concerns and access have been a hot topic. While most have stated they want safer roads, they didn't like the lane reduction plans.
California state scientists on strike, including those who protect Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first strike in California of state-employed scientists is taking place this week, and scientists in South Lake Tahoe are participating on Friday, November 17.
Across California, state-employed scientists are engaging in a collective fight for equitable wages. Their union contract expired three years ago and the sides are at an impasse.
The local scientists that may be taking part in the strike, should they choose to, are from Lahontan, Tahoe Conservancy, State Parks, and CalFire, and include those who provide the science to protect Lake Tahoe.
First human death from West Nile Virus report in El Dorado County in 2023

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials confirmed the first human death related to neuroinvasive West Nile Virus this year. The death occurred at the end of October. The individual was over the age of 55 and resided on the West Slope of El Dorado County.
In California in 2023 there have been ten deaths to West Nile Virus out of 317 human cases. In 2022 there were just 120 human cases in California with the five-year average being 147.4 cases annually.
USFS wraps up restoration work at Incline Meadow for winter

Restoration work at Incline Meadow has concluded for the 2023 season. USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) crews have winterized the project area and work is scheduled to resume next summer. The final phase of the meadow restoration work planned for 2024 includes backfilling the large channel that formed in the meadow after the man-made lake was drained and removing piles and berms to promote water connectivity throughout the meadow.
Funding approved for new Cal Tahoe JPA ambulance service building in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) approved $4.4 million for the new Cal Tahoe JPA ambulance buildings in South Lake Tahoe.
The JPA had been searching for a home for ambulances and staff and after a search of available buildings that would be centrally located, the county-owned building at 3066 Lake Tahoe Blvd. was chosen.

Lake Tahoe man pleads guilty to lewdness and sexual assault charges

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A Round Hill, Nevada man has pleaded guilty to several charges that came as a result of a 2022 investigation into lewdness and sexual assault of minors.
Zachary Nance was 35 years old at the time of his December 2022 arrest at his McFaul Way home.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The South Lake Tahoe Police Department, along with agents of the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), cited five clerks for selling alcohol to minors on November 10, 2023. The actions were the result of a Minor Decoy operation which included minors under the direct supervision of department agents that attempted to purchase alcohol from 14 retail licensees in South Lake Tahoe.

An upper low lingering along the California coast will eventually move across portions of California and Nevada late this week with cooler temperatures, said the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Periods of mountain snow showers and valley rain showers are expected with travel impacts will be possible mid to late week for the Sierra passes in heavier snow showers.
Group to have rally before next Douglas County School District

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The next meeting for the Douglas County School Board is on Tuesday, November 14 at 4 p.m. The day before will be a rally along US 395 from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The group "We Deserve A Better Board" hopes to fill the sidewalks through the middle of town with the color red and positive messages on signs to elevate their voice and show the community they want positive change.

The following calls only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma, and the Echo Summit area. SLT planning commissioners to hear annexation plans for Upper Truckee Marsh area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a proposal to pre-zone 90 parcels currently located within what is called the "City Sphere of Influence" in El Dorado County so they can become part of the city limits through annexation.
These parcels are part of five annexation scenarios presented during the June 6 South Lake Tahoe City Council public hearing. The council voted to pursue the "Cleanup Annexation Scenario" which encompasses the Heavenly California Base, the Tahoe Valley Campground, and parcels located in the Upper Truckee Marsh adjacent to the City’s jurisdictional boundary.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain Resort has opened its online parking reservation website for the 2023/24 season. Park Heavenly (https://www.parkheavenly.com/) shows parking areas, both free and reserved spots at Cal Lodge in South Lake Tahoe, and transportation options on an interactive map.
"Reserve N Ski" parking reservations are required on weekends (Saturday - Sunday) and Holiday/Peak Periods at the California Base Area parking lot until noon. A flat fee of $20 will be required for cars with three or fewer passengers and it must be paid for in advance online.
