SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another seven residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday. Of those, one is in El Dorado Hills, one in Greater Placerville, one in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, and four in the Lake Tahoe region.

One of those new cases, two are under the age of 18, and 5 are aged 18-49.

Another 126 people were tested for the coronavirus and 119 negative tests results were received.

There have been another five assumed recoveries with 111 assumed active cases.

Tahoe Conservancy opens restored Tahoe Pines campground to public

The unique and valuable habitat of the Upper Truckee in Meyers has been preserved through another California Tahoe Conservancy project at the site of the old Tahoe Pines Campground. They have finished building a new accessible-to-all trail and other public access features at the 8.1-acre site in Meyers. Visitors can enjoy easy access to the Upper Truckee River and experience the newly restored wetlands and wildlife habitat along Lake Tahoe’s largest tributary.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another 10 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday. Of those, five are in El Dorado Hills, one in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, -1 in Greater Placerville, -1 in North County, and six in the Lake Tahoe region.

One of those new cases, 3 are aged 18-49, 6 aged 50-64, and 1 aged 65 or older.

Another 192 people were tested for the coronavirus and 182 negative tests results were received.

There have been another three assumed recoveries with 109 assumed active cases.

New date for workshop on future plans for 56-acre project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public is being invited to give input on the 56-Acre Project in the heart of South Lake Tahoe. As the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County work out the financial arrangement of using county land, plans are underway for how it will look. Through a grant, the California Tahoe Conservancy gave the funds needed to create the master plan for the area.

Shots fired at Stateline home during large party

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Shots were fired at a large party on Upper Kingsbury early Saturday morning according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO).

At this time not much information has been released and the matter is under investigation.

DCSO Undersheriff Ron Elges did say that several shots were fired but there were no injuries and nobody was hit by bullets. He said the home where the party was on Tina Court.

There is no verification that the incident was at a vacation home rental. There have been no arrests at this time, Elges said.

Supervisor Novasel: Chaiman Veerkamp blatantly disregarded the action of the Board

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - On Friday, El Dorado County Supervisor Chair Brian Veerkamp broke board protocol by announcing he is invoking Emergency Powers to require El Dorado County to pay for sending Sheriff John D’Agostini to a political “conference” on October 29th which is being held by a select group of state senators in Red Bluff. Fire Weather Watch for Lake Tahoe - Gusty winds as temperatures drop

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Fire Weather Watch in effect from 5:00 p.m. Sunday through Monday at 5:00 p.m. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno is calling for gusty winds and low humidity for the Lake Tahoe Basin through western Lassen County.

* Affected Area...Fire Zone 271 Western Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierra, and Eastern Nevada Counties and Fire Zone 272 Greater Lake Tahoe Area.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrests three found with drugs, cash and a weapon

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) arrested three Reno residents after they were pulled over on suspicion of a speeding violation.

On October 22 at approximately 2:30 a.m., deputies on US395 stopped a vehicle for the violation. When they contacted the occupants they said they smelled the strong odor of marijuana from inside the car.

A field narcotics investigation was conducted and deputies said they recovered approximately eight pounds of marijuana, 627 grams of concentrated THC, just under $2,000 in US Currency and a Glock-19 handgun.

Red Ribbon Week focuses on harm tobacco and vaping have on youth

In 2020, Red Ribbon Week, the nation's largest and longest running drug-use prevention campaign, turns 35 and will be observed October 23-31. Red Ribbon Week has informed millions of kids and parents about the danger of drugs and alcohol, influencing positive choices and behaviors. However, one “drug” that may not receive as much attention lately is nicotine. which is highly addictive.

City Manager commits to improving the Regan Beach area and making it safer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe has been a problem spot for Al Tahoe area residents this year, with late night parties, speeding on Lakeview Avenue, and illegal use after hours.

South Lake Tahoe City Manager Joe Irvin sat down recently with residents around the city-owned Regan Beach to find out what could be done to improve the current situation.

"I am committed to improving the park," said Irvin of the new plans with safety at the forefront.

CASA El Dorado benefits the community by serving the abused, neglected and at-risk children in our county’s foster care system. This is accomplished by recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers from the community.

Four arrested after Butane Hash Oil labs found in South Lake Tahoe home

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Four men were arrested after narcotics detectives from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) executed a search warrant at a South Lake Tahoe home on Thursday, October 15.

Upon arrival, four suspects were detained inside the residence:

Leo Bailey, age 39
Benjamin Bailey, age 36
Randall Bailey, age 57
Michael Patterson, age 30

According to EDSO, Patterson attempted to flee from the residence on foot but surrendered to a Sheriff K9.

Strong early voter turnout in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Of the 133,251 registered voters in El Dorado County, 30,886, or 23 percent, have already turned in their ballots. The elections department does not have data from the 2016 election at the same point in time. That election had 97,024 or 83.31 percent of the 116,459 registered that year, turn in ballots by election day.

As of October 15:

Of those ballots, 28,996 have had signatures verified against reference signature and the balance of 1,890 are awaiting verification.

El Dorado County and South Lake Tahoe remain in state's orange reopening tier

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - During Tuesday's El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting, the county's Public health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams said the region remains in the orange tier of the California reopening plan.

During the meeting, Dr. Williams told the supervisors it is now obvious that California is in the midst of a second wave of coronavirus cases, and El Dorado County is experiencing a second wave as well, but so far the numbers have kept the region in the "orange."

Results from Douglas County master plan survey released

Douglas County has released the results of a community survey on the Master Plan Text Amendment conducted in September of 2020. More than 1,500 people took the survey, which asked about Agriculture and Conservation, Economic Development, Growth Management, Land Use, Public Facilities, Services, Recreation, and Public Safety. The Master Plan text provides additional guidance on the long- term development of the County (over the next 10-20 years). The text defines current issues and needs in the community.

Victim identified in Lake Tahoe boating tragedy

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The woman who died in Lake Tahoe on Friday, October 9, 2020, has been positively identified as a 30-year-old El Paso, Texas Resident.

According to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO), Daisy Rogers had been on a boat on Lake Tahoe when she went to back of the boat and accidentally fell off. A male adult who was also on board jumped in to save her but was unable to. He was wearing a life preserver but the victim did not have one on.

Douglas County Commissioners to possibly vote on new VHR regulations for Lake Tahoe

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - During their Thursday, October 15 meeting, the Douglas County commissioners will hear a presentation about the work done by an appointed task force about vacation home rentals (VHRs) in Tahoe Township. The agenda item is listed as having possible action by the commissioners.

Tragedy on Lake Tahoe after boat found adrift with six kids on board

LAKE TAHOE - A person hearing cries for help from Lake Tahoe Friday evening brought out a full emergency response to the middle of the lake.

An investigation is underway, but Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) Marshal Eric Guevin was able to release a few details about the October 9, 2020 incident.

Guevin said their Marine 24 responded along with the US Coast Guard after the person hearing the cries notified first responders. Not knowing exactly where the calls for help came from, responders headed toward Pope Beach. The first 911 calls were heard just before 7:00 p.m.

One hospitalized and two arrested after South Lake Tahoe assault and robbery

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two South Lake Tahoe men have been arrested after allegedly assaulting a man and stealing his firearm.

On October 7, 2020, officers from South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the El Nido Motel on Lake Tahoe Boulevard after someone said they saw a man being assaulted by two other people.

The victim, a 37-year-old local man, was transported to Barton Hospital and later flown to Renown Hospital in Reno as a result of his injuries.

Op/Ed: Creating a community without the divide of a state line

On October 31, 2016 I wrote an editorial "Use the election to create a community of collaboration and teamwork" due to a growing vibe of discourse and anger across the country as well as in South Lake Tahoe.

Since we are once again in the midst of a contentious national election I saw a need to once again look at the definition of community as we focus on our local situation in El Dorado County and Douglas County.

53 South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits recipients of American Century Championship donation

Local nonprofits in the South Lake Tahoe area were presented with a record $250,000 in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship as a result of money raised during the 2020 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

Just as the popular golf event was unique and held without fans due to COVID-19 this year, it was a different type of ceremony handing out the money and the presentation of checks held virtually. Representatives from 53 nonprofits awarded the money were on the Thursday Zoom call.

Restoration nearing completion, public soon able to access old Tahoe Pines campground

The unique and valuable habitat of the Upper Truckee in Meyers has been preserved through another California Tahoe Conservancy project at the site of the old Tahoe Pines Campground. The project opens public access to the river and will feature a picnic table or two, bike racks and informational kiosk.

South Lake Tahoe City Council expands business reimbursement program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their meeting Tuesday, the City Council approved the Winter Operations COVID Compliance Business Protection Grant Reimbursement Program which will reimburse local businesses for PPE and the equipment they need to operate safely during the winter months.

There were funds left over from the first business reimbursement program which gave up to $2,500 back to those who had to purchase items needed to operate safely.
