Last chance to give opinion about SR89 corridor project via survey

The SR89 Recreation Management Plan is being created to develop transportation and visitation management strategies and address the challenges of the corridor’s extensive transportation and recreation travel demand. This is a collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations and the public has a chance to weigh in.

Ski and west shore buses on the transit hit list; service added to Meyers

With a goal of being sustainable, Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is changing the way they provide transit in Lake Tahoe starting November 1, 2018.

"This is a reboot, not an end," said Carl Hasty, TTD District Manager at the District's board meeting Friday. "We'll all feel some pain but it's not the end."

There will be some cut routes, reduced hours, elimination of winter shuttles along with an addition of service to Meyers. Buses will now operate 14 hours a day instead of the current 20 hours.

AlertTahoe system to get final two Lake Tahoe fire cameras

Over 50 possible major forest firest have been prevented in the Lake Tahoe Basin since the AlertTahoe camera system was installed around the lake over the last four years. The combination of technology, human observation and firefighters on the ground kept those small fires contained to a space of less than one acre.

Art transforms space for juveniles at treatment center

"Your struggles were never meant to break you, but make you stronger."

Those are the words that have been printed on the new mural of Emerald Bay painted by Community Works participants on the gym wall at the Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) in South Lake Tahoe.

The five participants, all incarcerated at the JTC, had to do something community service oriented as part of their graduation from the one-year program. They brainstormed what that final project would be. They said they felt the white walls of the center's gym needed some color, and the idea of a mural was born.

Three fire departments respond to South Lake Tahoe apartment fire

One apartment was heavily damaged during an afternoon fire in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday.

At 4:00 p.m. on July 25, 2018, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was called out to the Rockwater Apartments in the 700 block of Emerald Bay Road. A fire had erupted on the deck of one of the apartments, apparently at a propane tank.

Severe thunderstorm warning for Lake Tahoe, Douglas County, Alpine County Sunday evening

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Glenbrook, Alpine County, Place County, El Dorado County, Washoe County, Douglas County an Western Carson City from 6:06 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. Sunday, July 22.

Radar has indicated a strong cell sitting over South Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay, bringing a chance of quarter size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph. In heavy hit areas, expect hail damage to vehicles along with wind damage to roofs, siding, fencing and trees.

Another strong thunderstorm cell is above Kirkwood.

Bus service faces drastic change in South Lake Tahoe; Public meeting Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Public comment closes this week on plans released by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) that address issues the agency is facing to be sustainable. Major changes are in store for riders.

Four plans were created as bus service cannot continue as it currently is due to several factors, including the cost of fleet replacement and improvement, funding availability and forecasted funds, regulatory compliance, and keeping and attracting drivers and staff.

New plan for State Route 89 being developed to alleviate traffic, improve access

A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations are working on what is being called the 'SR 89 Recreation Management Plan,' which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline. Some residential neighborhoods also rest along this area.

Author to present Emerald Bay and Desolation Wilderness book at historic estate

The Tahoe Heritage Foundation and Lake Tahoe Historical Society are presenting the evening's activities on Saturday, June 20 at 5:00 p.m.

Goin is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and is currently a Foundation Professor of Art in Photography and Videography at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Sale of his book and a book signing will follow.

The meeting will provide residents who live on the West Shore of the Lake Tahoe basin with an overview of the Committee’s work and full Board of Supervisor actions taken over the last several months to change the ordinance that regulates VHRs in the unincorporated portion of the County.

Lake Tahoe Humane Society to sell building, but keeps organization going in South Lake Tahoe

The new board of directors for the Lake Tahoe Humane Society (LTHS) has decided to put their building on Emerald Bay Road up for sale.

Fundraising account set up for South Lake Tahoe teen who broke neck

On May 28, 2018, 18-year-old Rocky Beaty of South Lake Tahoe suffered a trampoline accident that broke his neck and was transported by medical helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Rocky, a student at Lake Tahoe Community College, remains hospitalized in Renown after breaking his C-6 and C-7. A bank account has been set up to cover medical expenses at El Dorado Savings due to mounting costs and unknown future care expenses but they do know it will be extensive.

Camp Richardson light to remain "off line" indefinitely

CAMP RICHARDSON, SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After meeting with partner agencies, Caltrans has decided to discontinue the use of the pedestrian hybrid beacon crossing device on State Route 89 in Camp Richardson indefinitely.

In an effort to make for safe pedestrian passage across the highway and to manage traffic through the State Highway 89 corridor, Caltrans installed the beacons in 2016 but they were often confusing to drivers with its yellow and red light system.

Locals Day at Lake Tahoe Golf Course benefits Humane Society

From 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., they will be selling lots of goods in their back parking lot. Even though the agency is located at 884 Emerald Bay Road, its easier to access by parking behind them on Roger Avenue.

Tahoe Shoreline Plan released; Decade-long moratoriums could be lifted

LAKE TAHOE, CA/NV – The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) today released a draft environmental impact statement for a proposed Shoreline Plan for Lake Tahoe. The draft report is available for two months of public review and comment that will conclude Monday, July 9.

Logo contest for Lake Tahoe Humane Society as they "Restart, Rebuild, Restore, and Re-engage"

The new board members of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society are looking for members of the community to create their new logo, part of their "Restart, Rebuild, Restore, and Re-engage" plan. The new logo is one part of their plan moving the group forward and restoring services back to the community.

Roadwork season returns in South Lake Tahoe

The three-year long, $56.9 million Caltrans project on a two-mile stretch of Highway 50 from the Y to the Trout Creek Bridge is set to resume next week in South Lake Tahoe.

Scope of work in 2018 is from Winnemucca Avenue to Silver Dollar Avenue as well as repaving the “Y” intersection. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, April 30 at 6:00 a.m. from Winnemucca Avenue working east. The work schedule for May will be from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Youth empowerment program to be full of singing and dancing

Roadwork to resume on retaining wall project at Emerald Bay

Repair work to build a new retaining wall along a section of State Highway 89 in Emerald Bay is set to resume next week.

The retaining wall is being built near the Eagle Point Campground and work should be completed by the end of May. The northbound lane of the highway is closed and reversing one-way traffic is being controlled by automated signals.

A new concrete barrier near Eagle Falls was completed as part of the $4.4 million project last fall.
