Local non-profit uses submersible ROV's to clean Lake Tahoe's lake bed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A full-time plastic clean-up crew is now operating in the depths of Lake Tahoe, pulling out batteries, trash, and microplastics with submersible Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).

After two years of refining the ROV and skills to remove the trash, the Restoring the Lake Depths Foundation team of Zephyr Cove started removing items full-time in May 2022 and continues to work Monday through Friday in Lake Tahoe. They use BlueRobits2 ROVs with grappling hooks, a claw, and magnets.

While the "Clean up the Lake" project masterfully removed a tremendous amount of trash near shore to 25 feet in depth, they are limited by depths that the Foundation is able to reach beyond with an ROV, and down to the bottom of Lake Tahoe.

They have already removed over 1,000 pieces of debris from the deeper parts of the lake. The foundation's goal is to have two teams and two boats to get every last foreign object from the depths. They want to be the first robotics team to remove trash from 500 meters.
