STATELINE, Nev. – The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) has held its annual “Compost Your Combustibles” program to help residents dispose of defensible space debris safely and responsibly. Through a partnership with South Tahoe Refuse and Heavenly with the use of its Boulder parking lot, Nevada residents at Lake Tahoe have been able to drop their pine needles, pine cones, brush and vegetation fuels for free.

That service is at jeopardy with recent illegal dumping.

The following items are no allowed at the compostable drop off area:

• Plastic bags
• Lumber or milled wood
• Building materials
• Stumps
• Rocks or dirt
• Any other prohibited waste

Unfortunately, people are taking advantage of this program by illegally dumping prohibited items. Abuse of the site threatens the future of this valuable community resource and could result in the program no longer being available to our residents.

TDFPD is serious about enforcing the rules and will be monitoring the site with cameras. They said enforcement action will be taken against violators.

They are asking the public to help police the program by:
• Following the posted rules
• Speaking up when you see misuse
• Reporting illegal dumping to TDFPD

This program exists to help the Nevada side community reduce wildfire fuels without having to transport the yard waste to the South Lake Tahoe refuse center.
