LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Former ATP tennis player and Davis Cup Captain Mardy Fish won the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe for the third time on Sunday. Not only was he presented a check for $150,000 and the engraved crystal trophy awarded the winners of the popular celebrity golf tournament, he was also given the inauguaral White Lab Coat. The lab coat (think the green jacket in the Masters) was created by American Century Investments to honor its founder Jim Stowers and the research done at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City.
Fish said that he didn’t play his best Sunday, but played well enough to beat last year’s champion Joe Pavelski by six points in the tournament’s modified Stableford scoring system. Fish finshed with a 72.
“It was kind of a weird round today, weird start,” said Fish, who won in 2020 and 2024.
Fish four-putted the par-5 third hole and made bogey. On the sixth hole, after three straight bogeys, he said he did a mental reset and then played the final 13 holes at 2-under par.
“I did enough to win,” he said. “I didn’t play my best today, but I did enough.”
Birdies were hard to come by for retired hockey great Pavelski, with just one in the first 14 holes on Sunday.
“It was tough,” said Pavelski, who has now had five straight top-three finishes. “It was a different wind than what we’re used to. I had a few opportunities to make it a real race.”
Former LPGA champion Anika Sorenstam, who led at times over the three-day championship, also found birdies hard to come by Sunday. She finished with a 58.
“Obviously extremely disappointed,” Sorenstam said. “The first five holes was very steady and fine. But no, I played a little too aggressively and I didn’t make the putts I needed to. And I missed at the wrong time at the wrong place. …
“I felt like I had the opportunity to do it ‑‑ the door was open, and I just let it slip away. So disappointing, for sure,” she added.
She was one point behind Golden State Warrior great Stephen Curry. Always a fan favority, Curry, who won at Edgewood in 2023, had five birdies Sunday but couldn’t connect the whole game to get back to the winner’s circle.
“Obviously you’d love to have played a little bit better and be in contention,” said Curry, a four-time NBA champion with the Warriors. “But the memories you create with the week you spend here is awesome.
