SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has been officially recognized as a 2026 Fire Risk Reduction Community by the California State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection.
This statewide designation recognizes communities that have implemented best practices for wildfire planning, prevention, and community resilience.
What does this mean for City residents?
- The City will receive priority consideration when applying for CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grants, helping support future wildfire prevention and mitigation projects.
- The designation is also recognized under California’s “Safer from Wildfires” insurance regulations. Insurance companies are required to consider this community designation when developing homeowner’s insurance rates. While any impact will vary by insurer and individual property, residents are encouraged to contact their insurance provider to learn whether this designation may affect their policy.
- Most importantly, this recognition reflects the continued partnership between the City of South Lake Tahoe, CAL FIRE, Lake Valley Fire District, and our community to reduce wildfire risk and improve public safety.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the work that has been done locally and the recognition by the California State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection, said Fire Chief Jim Drennan. We have built strong partnerships with our neighboring fire agencies and land managers that have resulted in significant work on the ground. The work is never finished, and we are committed to continuing fuels reduction, public education, and encouraging homeowners to harden their homes.”
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making South Lake Tahoe a safer and more resilient community.
