MONDAY UPDATE: US50 in Kyburz was closed for almost two hours Sunday after a head-on collision between a Jeep Grand Cherokee and BMW X3 in Kyburz just before 1 p.m. The collision is under investigation, but what is known is the Jeep was eastbound and the BMW westbound when the crash occured.

Both drivers were sent to the hospital with major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Placerville. The driver of the BMW and three of their passengers were transported by Reach and Calstar helicopters.

The driver of the Jeep was transported by ground ambulance.

There are no other details at this time.

UPDATE 3:10PM: Caltrans reports the roadway has reopened.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Emergency crews are on the scene of a two-vehicle collision near Kyburz, which is blocking traffic in both directions.

CHP reports the incident as one with major injuries.

According to the CHP incident page, the collision occured at 12:54 p.m. on Sunday.
