Chase International shows off luxury Lake Tahoe real estate at London show

Sue Lowe of Chase International was recently in London to showcase the luxury Lake Tahoe real estate market, just a handful of agencies asked to take part in the show which attracts affluent buyers from throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Nevada's weekly wages at all-time high

Weekly wages in Nevada averaged $874 during the second quarter of 2016, up from $854 a year ago, which equates to a gain of 2.3 percent, according to figures released Monday by the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

“Weekly wages are at a record high and have grown at least 2 percent in four of the past five quarters,” said Tim Wilcox, an economist with the Research and Analysis Bureau for the state's employment agency. “Wages have been trending up since 2011, albeit at a modest pace.”

Weidinger PR wins three Silver Spike awards

Lake Tahoe-based Weidinger Public Relations was recognized with three awards for various campaigns at the Public Relations Society of America, Sierra Nevada Chapter Silver Spikes Awards, Nov. 17 at the Whitney Peak Hotel in Reno.

Weidinger PR received awards for each of its three entries: one Silver Spike and two Awards of Excellence.

The firm won the Silver Spike award in the category, Special Events and Observances, 1 or 2 Days, for their planning of the Edgewood Tahoe Lodge groundbreaking.

South Lake Tahoe motels merge into one, the Hotel Becket

What were once three separate South Lake Tahoe motels have merged into one new lodging property, the Hotel Becket.

The San Francisco hotel chain Joie de Vivre merged the Park Tahoe and 968 Park motels into their first location in Lake Tahoe. Located at the corner of Highway 50 and Park Avenue in South Lake Tahoe, Hotel Becket was originally two Travelodge motels and one Day's Inn. Several years ago the Travelodges merged into the Park Tahoe and the Day's Inn became 968 Park.

Hotel Becket is named from the "becket knot," a nautical term for tying two ropes into one.

Meeting held to help local employers with new federal overtime rule

A new federal law goes into effect on December 1 that entitles salaried employees to get overtime pay if they make less than $47,476 per year. To help people understand this change they are holding a lunchtime workshop on Wednesday, November 16 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Tahoe Mountain Lab.

According to the White House, an estimated 4.2 million white collar workers will become entitled to overtime pay when they work extra hours as a result of the new rule, and wages for workers will increase by $12 billion over the next 10 years.

GO Local Retailers Workshop hosted by Tahoe Chamber

The event will feature an overview of the Tahoe Chamber’s GO Local business campaign, the benefits of the campaign, and an audience brainstorming session.

Tahoe Mountain Lab to add working spaces on the slopes at Heavenly

Ever find yourself spending a day on the slopes when you wish you could get a quick work task completed, then get back to skiing or boarding? That wish will be a reality this winter as Tahoe Mountain Lab and Vail Resorts have developed a first of its kind coworking space at Heavenly Mountain's Lakeview Lodge.

Starting in December, the on-mountain solution will open for people that need to hammer out a few hours of work but would still like to enjoy a day on the slopes.

Tahoe Chamber names new Communications and Marketing Coordinator

Local resident Brittani Curtis has joined the staff of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (Tahoe Chamber) as Communications and Marketing Coordinator.

Kmart closing 64 more stores, South Lake Tahoe store is safe

Kmart is closing 64 stores across 28 states.

Sears Holdings, which owns Sears and Kmart, informed Kmart employees of the closures on Friday, according to several local news reports and multiple employees who spoke with Business Insider.

The stores that are closing will begin liquidation sales on September 22 and close by mid-December, employees said.

Businesses recognized for keeping Lake Tahoe blue

The League to Save Lake Tahoe has launched a program that recognizes Tahoe-based businesses taking action to protect Lake Tahoe.

So far, nine local businesses have pledged their commitment to Keep Tahoe Blue: Azul Latin Kitchen, Ernie’s Coffee Shop, High Sierra Gardens, Lake of the Sky Outfitters, RISE Designs, Tahoe Blue Vodka, Tahoe Sports & Entertainment, Tahoe Training Camps, and The Free Bird.

Chase International names top agents

The top agents for Lake Tahoe's Chase International were recently announced during a gathering at the historic Thunderbird Lodge.

For the second quarter, April 1 through June 30, Mike Dunn earned the accolade of top agent in Lake Tahoe. Dunn also led all other agents in sales volume sold (a total of $10.6 million). Trinkie Watson was named top agent in listing volume, while Brent Johnson and Alison Elder tied for agents listing the most units on the lake. Clif Chase was the listing agent with the most volume sold and Johnson was the top sales and listing agent in units sold.

Basin's only asphalt company, Tahoe Asphalt, to undergo major renovations

In operation in South Lake Tahoe since 1964, Tahoe Asphalt Inc. will replace their aging equipment this fall, some as old 63-years-old.

The batch plant, the only one of its kind in the Lake Tahoe Basin, was recently granted approval for their renovations by the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission after a series of public meetings. Located on Industrial Avenue, it predates most buildings west of the "Y", but a few neighbors were concerned about the plant and what it does to the environment.

Flight Deck Sports Bar & Grill at Lake Tahoe Airport reopens with new owners

Views are a given when in South Lake Tahoe, but being able to combine dining, drinking with mountains, blue sky and airplanes is a treat that the new Flight Deck Sports Bar & Grill at the Lake Tahoe Airport is hoping to highlight.

"Getting people out to the airport is a goal," said new co-owner Tina Shannon. "The beauty and the sunsets out here are amazing."

Tina, who along with husband Mike have reopened the Flight Deck, which shares the airport with the government center for South Lake Tahoe. They opened on June 22 and celebrated a grand opening on Wednesday.

Goodwill Industries store opens doors in South Lake Tahoe

"We're not your grandma's Goodwill," said Joseph Mendez, President/CEO of Goodwill Industries of Sacramento Valley and Northern Nevada as the ribbon was cut in the company's newest store in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday.

New business on the way to town: South Lake Brewing Company

South Lake Tahoe natives Nicole Riegel Smith and Chris Smith have returned to their hometown, this time as college graduates with an expertise in brewing beer and a desire to open a new business on the South Shore.

Plans have been submitted and the work will soon begin on the Smith's venture. South Lake Brewing Company. They have signed the lease for the long vacant Ace Hardware building on the corner of Tata Lane and Lake Tahoe Blvd.

The Ridge Tahoe Says "I Do" to $2 million renovated wedding and event center

The Ridge Tahoe resort at the top of Kingsbury Grade has expanded their wedding and conference capabilities for the newly renovated 3,700 square foot Castle Rock Event Space. The rustic Tahoe mountain venue has expanded its Clubhouse by 2,300 square feet, added two state of the art meeting rooms highlighted by architectural details including complementary natural wood decor, 16-foot high ceilings, and large windows allowing for natural ambient light.

Goodwill prepares for July 21 grand opening in South Lake Tahoe

Pier 1 is out of their location in South Lake Tahoe, and Goodwill Industries is heading in now that escrow has closed on the building at 1069 Emerald Bay Road. Goodwill will be celebrating the opening their 27th Northern Nevada/Sacramento area location with a four-day grand opening starting July 21 at 8:00 a.m.

Karen McClaflin, the Chief Development Officer for Goodwill Sacramento Valley & Northern Nevada, told South Tahoe Now that that the company has been actively engaged for the past seven years looking for a store and community training center in the Tahoe Basin.

Gorman leaves Tahoe Chamber to pursue new business

She's been a Regional Director with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, PR and Marketing with Kautz Irontstone Vineyards and Banquet and Conference Manager at Copper Mountain Resort. She earned a Doctor of Law degree, and, for what most in South Lake Tahoe know her as, she's been the Executive Director of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce. As of today, she's left the Chamber and is now preparing for a new career in coaching, leadership and training.

Apollo Global to buy Diamond Resorts for $2.2 billion

Las Vegas based Diamond Resorts International Inc said it agreed to be bought by private equity firm Apollo Global Management LLC for about $2.2 billion.

Apollo Global's offer of $30.25 per share in cash represents a premium of about 26 percent to Diamond Resorts' closing stock price on Tuesday. Shares of Diamond rose to $30.00 in morning trading, just shy of the offer price.

The deal follows a series of mergers in the hospitality industry this year.

Coachman Hotel holds grand opening this weekend

Nothing is normal about the new Coachman Hotel in South Lake Tahoe, and that suites management just fine.

Gone is the stuffy front desk. Gone are plastic outdoor furniture and generic beds. What takes their place are locally made wooden furniture, fire pits, a bar that doubles as the check-in counter, and books, games and s'mores to make guests feel like they're just hanging out in someone's home.

Donut and frozen yogurt shop opening in South Lake Tahoe

Get ready for some sunshine and happiness at the "Y" area of South Lake Tahoe. Rainbow Sprinkles Donuts and Frozen Yogurt is coming this summer, and locals and visitors alike are in for a treat.

Jody Filgo and Sallie Ross-Filgo have been planning their dream for a long time, and now they have the space to do it, the old donut shop next to Raley's.

They got the keys on Tuesday and popped the sign up in the window, letting people know what is coming.

Pier 1 store closing in South Lake Tahoe, Goodwill Industries coming in

Customers of Pier 1 received the notice Thursday that the company's South Lake Tahoe store on Emerald Bay Road will be closing. Moving in will be a store owned by Goodwill Industries.

Originally, Goodwill was issued a South Lake Tahoe business license at the same location from 7/2009 to 5/27/2011. The new license was issued on May 6, 2016.

Neither of the corporate offices for Pier 1 or Goodwill Industries have returned calls made by South Tahoe Now. At this time, the closing and opening dates are unknown.

Tahoe Mountain Lab provides unique work situation

While the official grand opening isn't until May 26, the doors have opened and office spaces are filling up at the new Tahoe Mountain Lab in South Lake Tahoe. What was once the Tahoe Daily Tribune offices on Lake Tahoe Blvd. is now home to 24 private offices, shared work spaces, tables and desks as well as the local paper's new office.

City to start annual fire inspections of local businesses

The City of South Lake Tahoe sent out emails to local businesses this week, advising them it is time for their required annual life and safety inspections of all existing commercial buildings which, among others, are used to sell merchandise, public assembly, hotels and motels.

Travis Taylor, the City's Fire Inspector, has begun the drop-in inspections which can take place Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Summit held to build successful businesses and employees

Over 100 people attended the Make Tahoe Work For You Leadership Lake Tahoe Summit on May 6 at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. The one-day Summit, featuring inspiring sessions for individuals and business owners, provided Lake Tahoe residents with tools to make Tahoe a viable place to succeed, both personally and professionally. The Summit was organized by the Tahoe Chamber’s Leadership Lake Tahoe 2016 class.

Historic estate near Edgewood sells for $8.5 million

A home designed by Julia Morgan on the shores of South Lake Tahoe near Stateline has sold for $8.5 million, making it the largest residential home sales in the city in nearly a decade.

Morgan, best known as being the architect behind Hearst Castle in San Simeon, designed two homes in Lake Tahoe. The one on the South Shore, named Twin Pines, was built in 1928 and includes a 2,750-square-foot main house with an 864-square-foot guesthouse. The home sits on 1.65 acres with more than 180 feet of sandy beach, a pier, and buoy.

Revive Interior Design opens in Lake Tahoe

Interior designer, Jessie Marchesseau, recently opened Revive Interior Design – a full-service interior design and home staging firm that serves communities in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Marchesseau, originally from Montana, has lived in the Lake Tahoe region for more than 15 years and has worked in local interior design and real estate industries for more than a decade. In addition to being a Tahoe local, Marchesseau has sold and designed homes in both California and Nevada, and understands the complexities of mountain and lake living.
