Land purchased to prove thinning forests can increase water supply
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/16/2015 - 8:13pmMore than 10,000 acres of scenic meadows, forests and trout streams in the Sierra Nevada 10 miles west of Lake Tahoe have been preserved in a deal in which environmentalists hope to prove that thinning out overgrown forests can increase California's water supply.
The Northern Sierra Partnership, an environmental group based in Palo Alto and founded by longtime Silicon Valley leaders Jim and Becky Morgan, joined with the Nature Conservancy and the American River Conservancy to buy the land for $10.1 million from Simorg West Forests, a timber company based in Atlanta.
Yosemite campground shuts down after squirrels die of plague
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/14/2015 - 6:41pmOfficials at Yosemite National Park said Friday they will temporarily close a popular campsite after two squirrels died of plague in the area.
Tuolumne Meadows Campground will close from noon Monday through noon Friday so authorities can treat the area with a flea-killing insecticide. Campers had their reservations canceled at the 304-site campground so the insecticide can be sprayed into rodent "burrow holes," the California Department of Health said Friday.
Plague is carried by rodents and is spread by fleas, but transmission between people is rare.

Full moon hike at Van Sickle Bi-State Park

They will begin their hike traveling uphill through the historic park and watch as the moon rises from the East over Daggett Summit and passes over the Carson Range.
This hike is for TRTA members only and is limited to the first 15 people to sign up for the free evening.

Mother and kids rescued on Lake Tahoe

At 9:45 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Command Center watchstanders received notification from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe that a 31-year-old female and her two children were missing and were last seen drifting on a raft in Meeks Bay.
The Sector San Francisco Command Center issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched a rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe.

New campsites, bike path and entrance for Camp Richardson
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/20/2015 - 9:51pmThe U.S. Forest Service will begin the first phase of their retrofitting of the Camp Richardson campground on July 21, something that has been in the planning stages since 2009.
During this first phase, they will remove approximately 250 trees in the campground on the north side of Highway 89. This portion of the project will last about two weeks. Work will be completed on this side of Highway 89 in October.
Phase two on the south side of Highway 89 is anticipated to begin in September 2015 and be finished by June 2016.

Angora Fire Restoration Project to resume

Crews will construct 700 feet of new stream channel to replace the existing Angora Creek channel, which was rerouted and straightened in the early 1900s to accommodate livestock grazing. Seneca Pond, constructed in 1964 when the area was under private ownership, will be returned to a wetland.

Red Flag Warning in place for Lake Tahoe Basin

High pressure has settled in over Nevada and will remain through the weekend. Temperatures will be well above noromal with moisture slowly working its way North into the Sierra and Western Nevada.
Isolated thundershowers are expected to become more numerous over the weekend. The storms will begin dry, becoming a hybrid of wet and dry by Sunday, then primarily wet by early next week.

Dense smoke is expected in Smith Valley, Mason Valley, and Antelope Valley. Other areas may also be impacted by smoke.

Camp for kids opens at the top of Heavenly Mountain Resort

After the campers went up the mountain on the 2.4 mile long gondola ride they enjoyed a day of high ropes, challenge courses, team building hiking, relay games, conservation education, nature crafts, scavenger hunts and much more.

Tahoe Bike Challenge wraps up with a Cycle Celebration

The 2nd annual Cycle Celebration will culminate the Tahoe Bike Challenge where 315 riders made 2,706 trips and covered 17,299 miles in the Lake Tahoe area on their bikes between June 1 and 14. All of those miles saved participants $3,845 in gasoline.
Bellamy Court at the back of Heavenly Village (by the parking garage) will be closed off for the celebration on Saturday, June 20 for a plethora of activities to celebrate biking in Lake Tahoe from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Lightening caused Northern California fire spreads to 1,480 acres
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/13/2015 - 10:32pmWinds hampered firefighting efforts at the lightening caused Saddle Fire on Saturday. As of 6 p.m., the fire has burned 1,480 acres in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, halfway between Redding and Eureka, California.
866 personnel are fighting the fire which is now 15% contained.
Firefighters have been protecting the homes along County Road 311, and as of June 13, no structures have been burned.
Challenges to firefighters include a heavy component of dead and down vegetation (from previous fires), hot, dry conditions, steep terrain, and ongoing drought.

The fishing was slow both days, but there were a few nice fish caught. At one time I felt as if I were at a ball game. I could hear the crowd cheering at one end of Willow Creek with the voices in unison rising and lowering as a 4-year-old angler was reeling in a 7 pound trout.

There is even a word for this: xeriscape. The definition of xeriscape is landscaping and gardening that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation.
The Tahoe Resource Conservation District is hold a free workshop on xeriscping on Wednesday, June 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the South Tahoe Public Utility District.

Reform called for in funding of wildfire suppression efforts

In its fifteenth year on the Rubicon Trail, the OHV team is again helmed by Sergeant Bryan Brown and staffed with one full-time seasonal deputy and eight part-time deputies who work the OHV team, in addition to their usual duties.
3,500 cyclists will take part in America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/06/2015 - 6:24pmCyclists from around the country have descended upon South Lake Tahoe for the 24th annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe on Sunday, June 7, 2015.
All 3,500 spots have been filled by riders participating in the 72-mile around the lake ride, the 100-mile Century ride and the 35-mile fun ride which includes a boat cruise.

June 10, 2015 - 6:30pm Chautauqua performer Steve Hale will present “George Whittell, Jr." who lived off the interest generated by the millions he inherited from his parents. His enormous assets allowed him to purchase the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe where he built the Thunderbird Lodge in the 1930s. The house was designed by prominent Reno architect Frederick DeLongchamps. This included a six-hundred-foot tunnel connected to a boat house to berth the “Thunderbird”, his fifty-five-foot mahogany yacht.

Thunderstorms expected in South Lake Tahoe Thursday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/03/2015 - 10:26pmThe National Weather Service is calling for widespread thunderstorms throughout the Sierra and western Nevada for the next several days. On Thursday, June 4 there is an 80% chance of rain in South Lake Tahoe with a rainfall total of .16 inch.
Chances of rain and thunderstorms continue through the weekend and into next week. On Friday, rainfall total of .14" is forecast, .23" on Saturday and a trace on Sunday.
The best chances for strong thunderstorms will be in and along the Sierra. Storms may start early in the morning with the strongest storms expected during the early afternoon.

The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will host the sixth annual Lake Tahoe Bird Festival on Saturday June 13, 2015 at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.
Residents and visitors are invited to attend this free family event from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Native Species Festival at Taylor Creek Visitor Center

The Sixth Annual Native Species Festival will be held at the Taylor Creek visitor Center in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This free family event is hosted by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and is a great way to spend the day outdoors and learn about the native species of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The Visitor's Center is located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.
