SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Stella Van Dyke Johnson American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe invites community members and visitors to join members of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion for a ceremony to remember the victims of September 11, 2001. LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation is inviting the public to take part in an online survey to provide feedback about proposed future improvements to US 50 on Tahoe’s east shore, including potential temporary test restriping of a section of highway lanes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A group of South Lake Tahoe residents is organizing to get a residential vacancy tax on the ballot in 2024 and they will be starting with a kick-off event on September 13.

Starting at 6 p.m. at South of North Brewing, the event will include a film screening of “Room and Board: A Tahoe Housing Crisis Documentary,” created by North Lake Tahoe filmmakers and housing advocates, as well as a vacancy tax Q&A session. Dear Editor, Residents in the Al Tahoe Firewise community and throughout the Tahoe Basin have worked extremely hard to reduce combustible fuels on their properties in order to mitigate the risk of wildfires. Every spring and summer, with the help of South Tahoe Refuse’s current weekly pickup practices, we have cleared multiple bags or cans of pine needles and cones, vegetation, and tree limbs in order to protect our homes and the community from wildfires. This fuel reduction also qualifies our nationally recognized Firewise district for fire insurance discounts.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in grades 6-12 interested in finding out what there is to do outside of the school day are invited to attend the Tahoe Learning Haven Extracurricular Fair on September 13 from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT).

The Tahoe Learning Haven puts on monthly forums and fairs for community members to bring them more information about educational opportunities in our community. Their forums are always on the second Wednesday of every month, from 6:45 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the BGCLT located at 1100 Lyons Ave. in South Lake Tahoe.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A group of citizens wants to get a ban on vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the Tahoe Township area of Douglas County and they want to have the voters decide.

Linda Dengler, a Kingsbury Grade resident, said she and other county residents want to have an initiative on a 2024 ballot and they need help gathering the needed 4,388 signatures in order to get it on the ballot. The petition states VHRs would be eliminated from all residential zones by Dec. 31, 2027.

Steve grew up with his brother Ralph in Southern California. Steve loved the ocean, developing a lifelong passion for surfing. Still, he knew Southern California wasn’t where he wanted to stay. When Steve graduated from high school in 1973, he went to visit friends in South Lake Tahoe for three weeks and instead found his forever home.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Barton Health Foundation, as part of its Heart Safe Community program, donated three automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to aid in the response to heart issues at South Tahoe High School. This brings the number of the portable lifesaving machines the Foundation has given to Lake Tahoe Unified School District to eight.

The award was given at the annual Educational Seminar for Tourism Organizations (ESTO) conference for the destination marketing organization’s integrated “Awe and Then Some” marketing campaign.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its August 24 board meeting, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) announced they are fully staffed for r certificated positions.

Trustee Jon Hetherton commended the District for moving in the right direction and gave accolades for the sense of community that was present during the Welcome Back Staff meeting and the New Staff Orientation event. Bernadette Santana, Classified School Employee Association (CSEA) President, also noted the excitement about the start of the new school year and the spirit of collaboration.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is advising motorists of continued traffic-interfering work on State Highway 28 in North Lake Tahoe next week after a break during the Labor Day holiday.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue to work on a gas line replacement project on Highway 28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

One-way traffic control is scheduled to resume between Watson Creek and Ridgewood Road in Carnelian Bay from Tuesday, September 5 at 8 p.m. until Friday, September 8 at noon. No work is scheduled on the weekend.
