SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) is offering free or low-cost preschool programs in South Lake Tahoe and there are currently openings available in all five of their top-rated preschool classrooms. Due to both federal and state funding, there are two convenient preschool locations on the South Shore, one at the Y and one in mid-town.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Headed to the Tahoe Basin for one last summer camping trip? Black bear biologists who work in the Tahoe Basin every day have some advice and thoughts to share.

When you choose to visit the Lake Tahoe Basin, you are headed to the heart of bear country at a time when the Tahoe Basin’s black bears will be especially active and persistent in their search for food to prepare for leaner times ahead in the fall and winter. Sometimes, the easiest food for them to find is human food and garbage.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Richard Peterson at the age of 74. He was the son of Nils and Margery Peterson. Richard was a dedicated doctor who touched the lives of many. Raised in Billings, Mont., Richard earned his medical degree in family practice from Loma Linda University in 1974 and later became board-certified in geriatrics in 1994. Richard's journey led him to Lake Tahoe in 1994, where he established himself as a pillar of the community and obtained the credential of Certified Medical Director.

The commitment to the communities they serve not only extends to providing the best service to their Liberty Utilities’ customers but to also helping to improve the lives of their customers by participating in events and programs that help those most in need.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bread & Broth will resume its B&B 4 Kids (BB4K) weekend food bag program on Friday, September 8. The weekend food bags are distributed every Friday at all five schools in Lake Tahoe Unified School District that serve pre-K through 8th-grade students. This includes Bijou Community School, Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School, Sierra House Elementary, Tahoe Valley Elementary, and South Tahoe Middle School, as well as high school students at South Tahoe High and Mt. Tallac High who qualify for the McKinney-Vento program.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Pay It Forward Project is looking for student service clubs or organizations to apply for one of its youth empowerment grants. The grants will fund community service projects and environmental projects that center on giving back to the community, respecting their fellow man, and continually looking ahead on how to make the world a better place for everyone in it.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The final night of Music in the Park for the season will be held at Tahoe Paradise Park on Friday, September 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The free event will feature Boot Juice, a River Rock and Americana band.

Organized by Meyers Mountain Market, the summer-long music series at the park has also featured food and a good community time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has always been a strong connection between South Lake Tahoe and Maui residents, and to support Hawaiian friends, a sticker has been created by Kenny Curtzwiler to raise funds for those in need after the deadly fires.

Keep Tahoe Maui Ikaika (which means Keep Tahoe Maui Strong) stickers are available for a minimum of a $10 donation. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Maui residents.

UPDATE: The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has updated the initial report of an armed robbery at the Chevron Gas Station on Wednesday evening. The suspect, later identified as William Ehlers, entered the gas station at approximately 3:30 p.m.and held the clerk at gunpoint.

Ehlers left with an undisclosed amount of money and an energy drink.

The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board is urging fishermen and recreational users to stay out of the water at Indian Creek Reservoir located in Alpine County. Localized areas of the lake were tested to confirm that the lake is being impacted by Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). The lake is posted with a lakewide recreational advisory of “DANGER” to alert lake users of the elevated risk.

Recreators are encouraged to follow the below guidance until further notice.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The San Jose Lil Sharks program will be returning to South Lake Tahoe for the Fall Session at the Tahoe Ice Arena. The Summer session sold out, and organizers are once again excited to introduce the great game of hockey to another group of kids.

The Fall Program begins in October and runs for six weeks. Participants are fitted with full gear, and sign-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the fires in Northern California and Oregon is responsible for the poor air quality in the Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Area and, on a lesser scale, the Sierra.

The wind from the north on Wednesday brought the smoke south into those regions.

There is a Red Flag Warning in Sacramento until 8 p.m. Wednesday night, and Lake Tahoe has a Lake Wind Advisory in place for Thursday.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - A Washoe County man who allegedly sold fentanyl and other drugs in the parking lot at Incline Village High School was arrested after an investigation by detectives with the Regional Narcotics Unit (RNU). They arrested 20-year-old Ramon Navarro for 22 felony counts of various narcotics offenses after they identified him as the source of drugs infiltrating the hallways of the high school on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join local law enforcement at Freel Perk on Wednesday, August 30 for Coffee With A Cop from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Coffee With A Cop was started to build relationships, one cup at a time. It brings law enforcement and the community members they serve together–over coffee–to discuss issues and learn more about each other.
