League to Save Lake Tahoe Executive Director Rochelle Nason has resigned today, effective October 2011, after nearly 20 years of working to protect and restore Lake Tahoe.

League Program Director Carl Young will serve as interim executive director, with Nason serving as a senior advisor, until a new executive director has been selected.

Gov. Brian Sandoval and legislative leaders today announced their appointments to the new Economic Development Board, which will focus on job creation and economic diversification.

Within three hours of a mass shooting last week in which four people were killed and 11 injured, investigators knew they were dealing with a mentally unstable man, according to recently released police testimony seeking search warrants for shooter Eduardo Sencion's two vehicles and his brother and parents' homes, as reported in the Nevada Appeal. Rather than funding many smaller projects as in the past, this year Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation, Inc. (SISLT) will distribute $28,000 to a maximum of five local nonprofit organizations. The goal of this new approach is to encourage applicants to think big and create increasingly impactful programs for the community.

La Niña is officially back, according to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and since La Niña contributed to a very wild 2010-2011 winter across the U.S. and Europe, a natural meteorological question is whether the same thing will happen this winter.

South Shore Lake Tahoe local Sid Loomis continues her work with the Undersea Voyager Project in Catalina on September 17. The 16-year-old was part of the original crew that brought a submersible to Lake Tahoe in May of 2009 to study Lake Tahoe and Fallen Leaf, as well as projects in Catalina and Bodega Bay in 2010.
On Saturday, Sept. 17 team leader Scott Cassell will scuba dive from Catalina to Cabrillo Aquarium near Long Beach for a study on sharks.

Update 6:05 p.m.: Moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported in isolated areas around South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, along with several lightning strikes. Lightning likely caused one spot fire high in the trees south of the intersection of Highway 50 and 89 in Meyers. It appeared, however, that heavy rain doused the flames.
Meanwhile, a flash flood watch remains in effect until 11 tonight for portions of California and Western Nevada including the greater Lake Tahoe area, Carson City and Reno.

A 25-year-old Minden man died Saturday in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 50 east of the Douglas County line on Spooner, seven miles west of Highway 395 in Carson City, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

According to NHP Trooper Chuck Allen, Edwin Bruno-Mazariego was riding his green 2008 Kawasaki ZX600P motorcycle east bound on the four-lane highway. For reasons still unknown, he failed to negotiate a left hand curve and departed the travel lane striking the adjacent section of guardrail.

A gunman who opened fire inside a Carson City restaurant has torn a hole through the South Lake Tahoe community, taking the life of a long-time local woman, maiming her disabled husband, and sending shock waves in the community after learning the gunman has family business ties in town.
The brutal murder that happened inside the International House of Pancakes this week claimed the lives of three U.S. Army National Guard personnel and Lake Tahoe Keys resident Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67. Shooter Eduardo Sencion, 32, of Carson City turned the automatic weapon he was packing on himself and left both communities stunned and asking questions about why such a senseless act of violence happened.
