The world has lost one of the best. On July 24th, at 78 years of age, Doug Forte passed away while on vacation in Maui. Doug was a 41-year resident of South Lake Tahoe. For the last four years, he had been living in Green Valley, Arizona where he lived with his wife Mary and dog Lola.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Transportation is advising Mt. Rose Highway commuters to anticipate upcoming brief traffic delays and stoppages as the avalanche control system located at the Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431) summit is replaced.

Beginning in late August through October, drivers can anticipate intermittent weekday traffic delays and stoppages near the Mt. Rose Highway summit during installation of the new system. The periodic traffic delays are anticipated to be less than 30 minutes as a helicopter delivers components for the project.

The South Lake Tahoe Republican Women hosted its annual BBQ on August 12, featuring guest speaker William McGinnis who wrote, “Slay the Dragon”.

Mr. McGinnis spoke about the very real threat all sectors of American society and American security face from the Chinese Communist Party and their relentless efforts to dominate world politics and become the pre-eminent military power in the world. The case he made is not anti-Chinese but rather the reality we face from a strong, determined, and intelligent adversary.

OUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - This weekend marks the end of the Lake of the Sky Amphitheater summer speaker series for this year. The Great Basin Institute and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are inviting community members and visitors to join them at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center for two shows.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Lindsey Stirling starts her "Snow Waltz Tour" in Lake Tahoe on November 16 at the new Tahoe Blue Event Center at 8 p.m.

Stirling is an American violinist, songwriter, and dancer. She presents choreographed violin performances in a variety of music styles, from classical to pop and rock to electronic dance music.

Many may remember her from season five of America's Got Talent where she was a quarter-finalist.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health has announced that Dr. Audrey DaSilva has joined Barton Pediatrics as a pediatric specialist. DaSilva joins a team of providers improving access for young families seeking pediatric care in the Lake Tahoe community. Over the past year, Barton Pediatrics has welcomed a wider range of physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) who are accepting new pediatric patients.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Douglas County TRIAD, has announced a new citizen’s law enforcement academy. There is no cost to attend, but space is limited. The "Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy" will be held Tuesday, September 5 through Friday, September 8 from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Class location is the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, located at 1038 Buckeye Road, Minden, Nevada. This academy is open to Douglas County residents.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The recent fire tragedy in Lahaina, this week's mudslides and flooding in southern Nevada and California from Hurricane Hilary, and the heavy summer tornado activity across the country, and fires currently ravaging Eastern Washington and Northern California, have been a reminder of how vulnerable people are and how necessary emergency preparation is.

As we learned during the Caldor Fire, planning is important, but it isn't just a "one-and-done" process.
