SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Did you see it? The northern lights, or the aurora borealis, put on an amazing show around the world Friday night. The dancing ribbons of light have captivated people for centuries, but those lights rarely make it to Lake Tahoe and the rest of northern California and Nevada. The bucket list moment was one many didn't expect to get from their home.

STATELINE, Nev. - The new hockey team for Lake Tahoe, the Knight Monsters, will be holding a public open house on their home ice on Monday, May 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It was previously scheduled for May 22 but has been moved.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community is invited to a Community Wildfire Preparedness Workshop on Saturday, June 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach.

This workshop will include presentations from the Fire Adapted Communities program, North Tahoe Fire, North Lake Tahoe Fire, Living With Fire (University of Reno), CalFire, United States Forest Service, and other experts. They will be covering a wide range of topics related to wildfire risk prevention, Firewise USA, prescribed fire, living with smoke, home hardening, defensible space, and more.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) will consider raising water and sewer rates at its May 16 board meeting. The public has been invited to public meetings over the past several months, and now they are invited to participate in the final step to raise rates for water and sewer customers. STPUD says $132 million is needed over the next ten years to bring the system up to par.

Alpenglow Sports is kicking off its 4th annual Community Book Initiative on May 13. The month-long event will highlight 21 books, chosen in collaboration with 10 respected and diverse community members, admired for their mountain, environmental and/or social leanings. The event will run from May 13-June 10, during which all of the proceeds from these specific titles will benefit the local nonprofit, Clean Up the Lake. The theme for the 2024 Community Book Initiative is “stewardship”.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — South Lake Tahoe’s first indoor mini golf course, Flatstick Pub, also known as Tipsy Putt, will be teaming up with the Bread and Broth to give back to the South Lake Tahoe community. Each Sunday of May from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Flatstick Pub will donate $1 for every beer and $1 for every round of mini golf purchased to Bread and Broth.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School District trustees will decide which of the six candidates for the superintendent position they will interview, and how they will obtain stakeholder feedback at their May 21 meeting.

Applications of the six individuals have been distributed to the trustees along with a screening form where they will individually rank the candidates. During the May 21 meeting, the trustees are scheduled to discuss their screening results and select which candidates will be brought forward for interviews.

Since moving to South Lake Tahoe more than 2 years ago, I’ve spent a lot of time participating in community forums and City Council meetings. Within moments, labels like "local," "patriot" and "environmentalist” come forth and are used to dismiss and exclude others from the community discourse. These terms are clear examples of the “no true Scotsman” logical fallacy that painfully and unnecessarily divides us.
