If held, the 2020 American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe may look different

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - NBC Sports and American Century Investments are still trying to pull off their 31st annual celebrity-filled golf tournament at the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. In a statement, they said they are "continuing extensive due diligence in efforts to conduct the 2020 American Century Championship as scheduled, July 8-12."

If the tournament happens, officials say it may not look like it did in years past with all of the boats and crowds along the beach on the 17th hole, or the large galleries following the players. It may just be the golfers on the course with no fans and full coverage on NBC, or whatever can be planned in a socially distancing, responsible manner

If held, tournament organizers will be strictly adhering to health and safety guidelines with state and local authorities to ensure the protection of all participants.

Thousands of tickets have been sold annually for the popular week-long event. Retired Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo won the tournament the past two years and baseball great Mark Mulder the three years prior to Romo's wins. Stars from the worlds of sports, entertainment, and politics have walked the greens at Edgewood.

Besides a $600,000 purse for the players, money is raised for local nonprofits and national charities.

The act booked at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert for the tournament, Rascal Flatts and their farewell tour, has already canceled.

American Century will keep the public up-to-date with information on their website, https://americancenturychampionship.com.
