Winter storm could bring additional 2 feet of snow to Lake Tahoe and Sierra region

With a much stronger storm system approaching tonight, expect slick roads with freezing fog this morning for the Lake Tahoe Basin and down into the valleys, according to the National Weather Service.
Chains and snow tires are required along mountain roads throughout the basin and over mountain passes.

Wind to pick up tonight at Lake Tahoe ahead of weak weather system

A strong cold front will move across eastern California and western Nevada tonight and early Saturday morning, the National Weather Service in Reno reports. A wind advisory is in effect beginning at 10 p.m. tonight.

TRPA community liaison Jeff Cowen honored by North Tahoe chamber

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency employee Jeff Cowen was honored as the recipient of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber and Resort Association’s Employee of the Year Award for his outstanding work as TRPA’s Community Liaison.
“I was shocked and truly honored to receive this recognition,” Cowen said about the award. “I am lucky in my job because I get to inform the community about all the great work being done by TRPA staff. I know I share this award with them,” he said.

Heavy snow expected with quick-moving storm

More much-needed snow for the Lake Tahoe Basin is on the way, with a cold low pressure system that will move into the region by Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
The strong jet stream and sufficient moisture associated with the system may produce heavy snow at times.

Lake Tahoe Federal Advisory Committee to meet at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency

(News Release) — The Lake Tahoe Federal Advisory Committee (LTFAC) is scheduled to meet from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Feb. 9, 2012, at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, 128 Market Street, Stateline, NV 89449. LTFAC will address issues related to federal activities at Lake Tahoe. Items on the agenda include reviewing and confirming the LTFAC Vision and Strategic Planning Session outcomes, and public comment.

Windy conditions Sunday ahead of midweek weather changes

A major pattern change next week should finally bring snow to Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
In the photo illustration above, the first three images show the jet stream and large scale (synoptic) pattern changes forecast to take place over the Eastern Pacific Ocean next week. The persistent high pressure ridge that had kept most of the West Coast abnormally dry this winter is forecast to amplify and retrograde allowing the Sub-Tropical Jetstream to bring strong winter storms back to the Sierra. The fourth image shows a significant amount of moisture that should prompt the storms at the end of next week.

Breezy conditions today in the basin and West Slope

Wind gusts and breezy conditions are expected today around the greater Lake Tahoe area. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect through 4 p.m. this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Winds are expected to be from the northeast 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Wave heights are expected to be 2 to 4 feet. Small boats prone to capsizing should remain off the lake until water conditions improve.

Tahoe planning agency to look at Homewood plan; Upper Truckee river plan removed from agenda

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will hear plans on the Homewood project on the west shore but has scrapped plans to discuss the Upper Truckee River Restoration project during a two-day meeting of the Governing Board.
According to a news release, the Dec. 14 agenda remains unchanged and includes a proposed adoption of the Final Environmental Impact Review and Environmental Impact Statement for Homewood Mountain Resort. Most of the changes in the draft document will not need to wait for the TRPA’s scheduled adoption of the Regional Plan Update in 2012 to take effect. The TRPA Governing Board could vote to adopt the reformatted and more understandable version of the code in November of this year, according to the Agency.

El Dorado Forest Service officials report the lightning-caused Long Fire, which has burned about 275 acres in timber and brush, is about 85 percent contained and poses no risk to life or property.
