Tahoe Arts Project brings musician Todd Green to schools and stage

Have you heard any good Middle Eastern Oud or Kemenche lately? How about South American Charango and Zamponia or East Indian Tablas or Santoor? Intrigued? These and many other ethnic instruments from the Middle East, Central Asia, India, China and South America will be played by multi-instrumentalist Todd Green at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27 at South Tahoe High School Theater. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for children. The concert will be preceded by a half-hour quiet strings-only, live prelude.

Kids can try hockey for free this Saturday

Kraft is sponsoring a free day of ice hockey across America on Saturday, and the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena will be one of the spots they're hosting.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., all kids can try out hockey at the arena which is located at 1176 Rufus Allen Blvd in South Lake Tahoe.

Horses available for adoption in El Dorado County

Horses in the middle of a years-long battle between banks, attorneys, an animal rescue center and others are now available for adoption. Their saga began at a ranch in Susanville, CA where 90 horses were found near death. The horses where brought to an El Dorado Hills group, Grace Foundation, after officials from Wells Fargo and Bank of America found them starving and uncared for on the property they where they held the note.

Historic Lake Tahoe ranch listed for $98 million

Update: This property has sold.

If you've been hankering for a getaway at Lake Tahoe and have $98 million to spare, you're in luck.

Check out Shakespeare Ranch, which takes up 133 acres along 423 feet of shoreline. It's named for Shakespeare Rock, which overlooks the property and is said to resemble the playwright.

Sierra Nevada Red Fox Spotted for First Time in Nearly 100 Years at Yosemite

For the first time since World War I was ongoing, a rare Sierra Nevada red fox was spotted in Yosemite National Park. The video above shows the fox making tracks through the snow-covered mountains early this past December.

The National Park Service said in a press release that two documented sightings have occurred in park since early December, one on Dec. 13, and another on Jan 4. These marks the first confirmed sightings of the rare fox in the park in nearly 100 years.

STHS grad returns to the South Shore as Hard Rock's new Executive Chef

Nothing like returning to your hometown with a bang in the midst of the biggest thing to happen in South Lake Tahoe in quite some time. Jonathan Snyder, a 1991 graduate of South Tahoe High, returned to his roots Wednesday as the Executive Chef at the newly opened Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Snyder greeted the media on Wednesday during the media tours of the hotel, restaurants and casino.

El Dorado Savings moving one branch to Stateline

El Dorado Savings Bank is going to move their Bijou branch to Kingsbury Grade in April, taking over the former location of Bank of America.

When the reconstruction of the Crescent V Center started the branch was moved to its current location at 3443 Lake Tahoe Blvd, which is about a mile from another branch of theirs on Al Tahoe Blvd.

A bank employee said the new branch in Nevada will open more options for their customers, including those with Nevada business accounts. They will also have a larger space for safety deposit boxes and easy parking.

Amada Soriano Masellones 1935-2014

Amada Soriano Masellones, age 79, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loving family on Tuesday morning, December 30, 2014 following a long illness.

Amada was born June 9, 1935, in Calape, Bohol, Philippines to Jorge and Macra Soriano. She attended and graduated from Silos Vocational School of Dressmaking in the Philippines on February 14, 1953.

In the United States, 31% of all traffic fatalities involve drunk driving which means 10,322 people are killed by drunk drivers annually, with 802 of those in California alone.

TRPA wins Silver Spike Award for their "Tahoe in Depth" newspaper

Tahoe In Depth, the environmental newspaper that the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency created two years ago to help improve awareness and understanding of lake issues, was recognized with a Silver Spike award at the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America annual awards ceremony on Thursday.
Silver Spike awards recognize the northern Sierra region’s best public relations and communications campaigns, according to Anne McMillin, President of the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

At Tahoe and Across the Country, Epic Collaboration is Key

As the keynote speaker at last month’s National Workshop on Large Landscape Conservation in Washington, D.C., U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell emphasized the central role collaboration must play for America to protect its natural resources, balance economic needs, and address emerging environmental challenges such as climate change.

“We are moving into an era of epic collaboration,” Jewell said, explaining that regional partnerships across jurisdictional boundaries are more important than ever for the federal department that manages 20 percent of our nation’s land.

Jean "The Dancing Machine" Dahlinger celebrates her 100th birthday at Barton

The year was 1914. Charlie Chaplin appears in his first movie. Ford Motor Company announces an 8 hour work day and a wage for employees of $5/day. Woodrow Wilson is President and Babe Ruth makes his major league debut. November 12th of that year was when Jean Dahlinger of South Lake Tahoe was born.

Today, 100 years later, Jean celebrated her 100th birthday at the Barton Mountain Cafe with family, friends and community members. Known as "The Dancing Machine," Jean was serenaded by the South Tahoe High Jazz Band as they played "Happy Birthday" and "America the Beautiful."

El Dorado County Food Bank to present results of South Lake Tahoe Hunger Study

All South Lake Tahoe members of the Hunger Response Network will be meeting on Wednesday to discuss the results a hunger study conducted in the area last spring.

The El Dorado County Food Bank will be hosting the October 22 meeting at St. Theresa's Bread & Broth at 9:30 a.m. They will discuss the results of the South Lake Tahoe focused Hunger Study to truly understand the community’s needs and the best ways to allocate the Food Bank’s resources in Tahoe based on these results.

Blue Ribbon Award Nominees Announced by TahoeChamber

The nomination period for the 2014 Blue Ribbon Awards ended on Friday, October 10 at noon. Mountain Coworking Alliance allows members to work from California to Colorado

This season, skiers and snowboarders can travel to a top-rated ski resorts and have space to work. The Tahoe Mountain Lab opened on Ski Run Blvd last year and gives locals and travelers the opportunity to have a dedicated workspace when they need it and now members can travel to other ski resort towns and use other locations.

Other mountain communities that offer the same workspace opportunities are located in Frisco, Avon, Basalt and Durango, Colorado, Jackson Hole, Wyoming as well as in both North and South Lake Tahoe.

Just 10% of Americans needing drug or alcohol treatment are receiving it

Drug and alcohol statistics for 2013 show that the rate of drug use in America has declined by approximately 30% from 30 years ago but has risen fairly steadily since 1992.

Yesterday, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released an overview of the findings of the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). The report released yesterday showed that in 2013 illicit drug use in America was stable over the previous year:

First Tees & Tastings Golf Tournament at Northstar at Tahoe

Northstar California Resort invites golfers and foodies alike to compete in the first annual Tees and Tastings tournament Thursday, August 28. 'Forever Dreams for Veterans' to raise funds for military brain injuries

Almost once an hour a military veteran commits suicide in the United States according the the Department of Veterans Affairs and among those on active duty the number is still sobering, one a day.

In an effort to bring the plight of American military members suffering from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) to the forefront, a Broadway like show and wellness festival are coming to South Lake Tahoe.

I love Lake Tahoe history and have been looking forward to the much anticipated Chautauqua which is coming to Valhalla's Boathouse Theater on Thursday, August 7.

23rd Annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride on Sunday

America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride isn't your normal Sunday bike ride unless you normally ride around Lake Tahoe with 3,000 of your friends. The annual bike ride has been bringing riders to Lake Tahoe annually for the past 22 years.

This year's 23rd Annual event is on Sunday, June 1. With the temporary closure of the Horizon for remodeling, the staging for the ride has moved across the street to the MontBleu.

Food Bank to Hold Hunger Response Network Meeting in South Lake Tahoe

All organizations that assist clients who are living with hunger, from children to the elderly are invited to attend the Food Bank of El Dorado County's Hunger Response Network Meeting. The meeting will be at the American Legion Hall at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The need for food assistance is growing in the community and the Food Bank wants to collaborate with local organizations to conduct a South lake Tahoe focused hunger to truly understand the community’s needs and the best ways to allocate the Food Bank’s resources in Tahoe based on these results.

Full City Council Agenda on Tuesday Including Tahoe Wellness Cooperative's Event Permit Appeal

The City Council agenda for Tuesday, April 14th runs the gamut from a presentation on the Tahoe Valley Plan to the Cal Trans Master Agreement to hearing an appeal by Cody Bass of the Tahoe Wellness Cooperative.

Council will meet in closed session at 8 a.m. on anticipated litigation. The regular meeting will be called to order at 9 a.m.

Puppy Mill Protest in Reno on Saturday

Organizers are expecting a large turnout at Saturday's anti-puppy mill demonstration in Reno at the corner of Neil Rd and S. Virginia Street from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

"The event is being called to show the Reno and Sparks City Councils and the Washoe County Commission that citizens mean business when it comes to a ban on the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in retail stores in Reno, Sparks and Incline Village," stated Billy Howard, Founding Organizer for the popular initiative Puppy Mill Free Reno/Sparks/Washoe.
