National Pet Day celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

Join your South Lake Tahoe friends at the Animal Coalition of Tahoe and Beach Retreat & Lodge on Tuesday, April 11 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. as they celebrate National Pet Day.

They will have a Best Dressed Dog Contest, vendor booths, drink specials and a pet psychic.

It will cost $5 to enter dogs in the contest with the grand prize being a two-night stay the Beach Retreat & Lodge with dinner. All proceeds go to help spay and neuter local animals.

The Avalanche Dogs from both Heavenly and Sierra-at-Tahoe will be also be on hand during the event.

Skier caught in avalanche on Mt. Tallac

The Sierra Avalanche Center is reporting a skier-triggered avalanche in "The Cross" on Mt. Tallac Saturday. A group of eight skiers had been in the area about 11:00 a.m. and they skied the main entrance to the cross with some wet, loose snow activity observed.

Then, a group of two skiers went to the top of the mountain to descend into "The Cross." The first skier made several turns into the slope which released a slab avalanche.

2nd annual Dual on Dynamite fundraiser for Sierra-at-Tahoe Avalanche Dogs

Kenny Curtzwiler, the Lake Tahoe SkiBum, has organized the 2nd annual Dual on Dynamite bump race to be held at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Sunday, April 2 as a fundraiser for the resort's avalanche dogs.

This event will also be the used as the inaugural "Remember Zach 'Zach-Mac' McAllister" event.

A South Lake Tahoe native, McAllister died unexpectedly in November, 2016 at the age of 26. The 2008 South Tahoe High graduate was a firefighter-paramedic at Northstar Fire Department for four years and a ski patroller at Sierra-at-Tahoe for eight years.

Avalanche on Mt. Tallac above Lake Tahoe 1,000 feet long, 150 feet wide

The Sierra Avalanche Center is reporting a large (D4) slide that appeared to run during the rain on Monday, February 21 in Desolation Wilderness on the slopes of Mt. Tallac above Lake Tahoe.

The 1,000 foot long avalanche named Corkscrew Slide Path, started at an elevation of 6800 feet and was approximately 150 feet wide. Trees up to approximately 6 inches in diameter were visible within the debris at the end of the slide.

Power issues for Placer and Nevada counties

7:30 p.m.update 2/23:
Floriston: After working nearly 24 hours and bringing in a second generator, attempts to provide temporary power have failed. Crews will begin to rebuild the line on Friday in this steep terrain with the goal of restored power by early Saturday morning.

River Road/Silver Creek/Fir Crags/Hwy 89: Crews were able to begin repairs today; a helicopter will come in tomorrow to complete with restoration expected late Friday/early Saturday.

I80 closure bringing big rigs through South Lake Tahoe

If you think you're seeing more 18-wheeler trucks in South Lake Tahoe, you would be correct.

Since I80 has been closed this afternoon due to poor traction and whiteout conditions, many trucks are heading to US50 over Echo Summit in order to take their loads west.

Current road conditions:

SR88 from Red Lake to Martin Meadown, including the Carson Pass, is closed.

Widespread power outages along Lake Tahoe's north and west shores

9:30 p.m. update:
Portola: Trees fell on primary line; crews on site making repairs; most customers should be restored by 10 pm.
River Road/Silver Creek/Fir Crags Road/Hwy 89. Avalanche danger and weather conditions prohibiting crews from accessing damage; customers should plan on multi-day outage. We hope to access Weds morning.
Ward Canyon: broken pole; estimate most customers restored by 10 pm.

Tuesday morning look at Lake Tahoe area roads and weather

It was very windy overnight in South Lake Tahoe with the highest gust of 56 mph recorded at the Lake Tahoe Airport at 1:03 a.m. Tuesday morning. From 7:00 p.m. Monday to 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, winds have stayed in the 30-50 mph range. According to the forecast, winds will 25 mph during the day with gusts as high as 45 mph Tuesday, breezy over night with winds 15-20 mph and gusts to 30 mph.

Alpine Meadows (recorded at 8643 feet) experienced high winds all night with winds at 11:00 p.m. Monday recorded at 144 mph along with gusts of 199 mph.

Avalanche closes Mt. Rose Highway in both directions

An avalanche Monday night has closed SR-437 in both directions at the summit. There is approximately 20 feet of snow covering the road.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and Nevada Department of Transportation are both responding to the avalanche and will begin clearing operations.

There is no estimated time of reopening at this hour and no other information is available.

Road closures and chain controls in place as heavy snow hits South Lake Tahoe

3:40 p.m. update: It is taking three hours from the Y to Meyers, so if you're on the road you may want to consider going inside for the rest of the day. The snow is not letting up and there is a lot more to come.

Traffic heading west from South Lake Tahoe is still slow going, and there have been several weather and traffic relate incidents on US50 west of Lake Tahoe. At this time, emergency vehicles are at the scene of a three-car accident near Kyburz. The road has reopened but may need to close again to remove one of the cars.

What is best solution to keep visitors leaving Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 and not on side streets?

It's another snowy weekend, and another weekend of drivers trying to head home over Echo Summit via Lake Tahoe Blvd and North Upper Truckee Road. With a backup at the chain control stop in Meyers, many are trying to circumvent not only the traffic, but the controls and causing issues on snow covered side roads.

Roads around Lake Tahoe a mess, I80 closed due to mudslide, Hwy 50 closed again near Ice House

4:30 p.m. update: Just as the Highway 50 opened, it is once again closed in both directions due to a "large mud slide" at Ice House Road, the third slide on Highway 50 today.

Flooding around Lake Tahoe prompts road closures

A flood warning remains in effect for South Lake Tahoe until Wednesday evening. One storm system will be leaving the area as a new atmospheric river heads into the region on Thursday.

Flood watch warning is now in place for Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to Friday at 4:00 a.m. This will be combine with a winter storm warning starting at the same time and going until Saturday at 1:00 a.m. Those warnings will be replaced with a dry period over the weekend with sunny clear skies and temperatures into the 40s and 50s.

Avalanche takes out power to Fallen Leaf Lake, no reported damage

An avalanche near the Stanford Sierra Camp on the shores of Fallen Leaf Lake near Lake Tahoe took out a main power line, causing the area to be without power for much of Tuesday.

Camp officials said there was no damage. Snow came down the mountain as it does about every other year, coming to rest against one of the Stanford Camp's cabins as well as an employee restroom.

Liberty Utilities crews were called out at 10:30 a.m. February 7 to repair the power line and restore power to 25 customers. Power was back up to all by 3:00 a.m. Wednesday.

SR89 around Emerald Bay reopens

State Route 89 around Emerald Bay from D.L. Bliss State Park to Emerald Bay State Park is now open.

Caltrans crews had been working for weeks to clear debris and snow off the road which links South Lake Tahoe to the North Shore via the west side of the lake. In some spots, the snow was up to 30 feet high. With the early January storms the avalanche danger was high in the area as well.

The road opened on February 1 at 6:35 p.m.

Squaw Valley closes after fatal accident of ski patroller

2:00 p.m. update - Joe Zuiches, a 42 year-old resident of Olympic Valley and a member of the Squaw Valley professional ski patrol since 2012, was killed in a fatal incident at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday morning, prior to regularly scheduled operations, during avalanche control activities at the top of Gold Coast Ridge at Squaw Valley. The cause is believed to be the detonation of an explosive charge. An investigation is ongoing in cooperation with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and North Tahoe Fire Department.

Avalanche on SR89 between Tahoe City and Alpine Meadows

1:00 p.m. update - SR-89 is back open to traffic after the snow from an early morning avalanche was cleared off the road.

State Route 89 remains closed Monday morning after an overnight avalanche between Alpine Meadows and Tahoe City caught two cars in its path.

Drivers in the cars were rescued in about 45 minutes and there were no injuries. Two of the occupants of the cars, Tahoe City area residents, posted a photo from inside their trapped car on social media.

Highway 50 back open over Echo Summit; Cars stuck on side roads

Echo Summit was closed this morning so crews could work on avalanche control, creating a backup not only on Highway 50 in Meyers, but on side roads leading to the summit. Heavy snow stranded several motorists on North Upper Truckee near Mt. Rainer. Lake Tahoe Blvd was closed at Sawmill Pond while the highway was closed to prevent more drivers from driving towards North Upper Truckee.

Highway 50 over Echo Summit closed for avalanche control, traffic backed up

8:25 p.m. update - Traffic is starting to move over Echo Summit.

8:00 p.m. update - Highway 50 from Meyers to Sly Park remains closed at this hour due to avalanche control. There have also been several spin-outs and other weather related issues according to and earlier Caltrans report.

Traffic has been backed up for hours on Highway 50 as people head to South Lake Tahoe for a weekend of fresh powder. Snow, snow covered roads and chain controls have made travel slow and now the road is closed between Meyers and Pollock Pines for avalanche control.

Another major storm for Lake Tahoe, feet of snow at lake level expected

1:00 p.m. update - The National Weather Service in Reno is updating their forecast as the storm heading to Lake Tahoe Sunday and Monday is trending towards "Big Snow."

On Friday, another round of heavy snow will start just after midnight Friday morning, impacting traffic throughout the day. Reno and the rest of Western Nevada will be impacted as well with up to several inches of valley floor snow.

Helicopters used to survey power line situation in Lake Tahoe

Liberty Utilities is continuing their restoration efforts throughout the north, west and south shores of Lake Tahoe. On Friday, helicopters helped Liberty Utilities take a look at previously inaccessible areas to survey damage to downed power poles and lines.

A helicopter is coming in from Southern California on Saturday and will drop crews and equipment into remote areas to begin restoration that is expected to take several days. Snow cats and snowmobiles will be used to get crews and equipment into Tahoe Pines tomorrow, and this is also expected to take several days.

Winter storm warning in effect for Lake Tahoe through Thursday

The worst has passed, but there is still a last bit of storm waiting to swing through South Lake Tahoe. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning to be in effect until 10:00 p.m. Thursday, January 12. This time, the snowfall will be measured in inches instead of feet.

Bands of snow will be heavy at times, bringing an additional 4-8" of snow to lake level, with a foot or more above 7000 feet.

There will be some winds associated with this next storm. Southwest wind 10-15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph except at the Sierra Ridge where gusts will be up to 75 mph.

Traffic stuck for hours at Echo Summit due to avalanche and safety concerns

After drivers were stuck on both sides of Echo Summit starting at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Caltrans has closed the highway as of 7:05 p.m. Eastbound traffic is being stopped at the Sly Park, and westbound in Meyers. Unsafe driving conditions due to heavy snow and the threat of avalanches have been a concern all day.

As of 7:00 p.m., cars hadn't moved much. For a short time at 4:00 p.m. Caltrans was attempting escorted travel from Meyers heading west before closing down the highway.

Snow making a comeback in Lake Tahoe

Snow. You know, that frozen, fluffy white stuff that covers the mountains around Lake Tahoe? With less than stellar snowpacks over the last several winters, many might have forgotten what snowstorms really could look like in South Lake Tahoe. This week, however, memories are being refreshed with a blizzard impacting the Sierra Nevada that could bring up to seven feet of snow to the lake.

Liberty Utilities closing offices and call center due to storm

Liberty Utilities has closed their walk-in and call center offices in Tahoe Vista and South Lake Tahoe due to treacherous weather conditions.

There are approximately 2,000 customers still without power, crews are still trying to make repairs although they are hampered by unsafe conditions including avalanche danger.

South Lake Tahoe had 5.13" of rain Sunday; 2-5 feet of snow on the way

The South Lake Tahoe area had 5.13" of rain on Sunday, causing temporary flooding of streets, meadows and some residences and businesses. As the rain left the basin, snow has moved in and the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning to remain in place until 4:00 a.m. Thursday, January 12.

Monday morning South Lake Tahoe storm recap

10:00 a.m. update 1/9/17: The City of South Lake Tahoe and the American Red Cross have closed their evacuation center in the city. One person arrived at the evacuation center last night.

"LTUSD and the Red Cross were excellent partners during last night’s storm event," said Tracy Franklin of the City of South Lake Tahoe.

The SLT Public Works department will be focusing on snow removal today. They are also working on getting the deep slushy water out of roadways. Franklin said the flood areas are still flooded and not receding at this point.

After rain, heavy snow expected through Thursday in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe will be experiencing rain through Sunday, but forecasters say it will be replaced by snow later this evening.

The very dynamic and strong system passing over the Sierra also created some lightning and thunder overnight and on Sunday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno told South Tahoe Now that it is very common with a strong storm like this to see lightening.

Liberty Utilities asks for customers to be prepared for power outages

Weather conditions are expected to worsen over the weekend and increased power outages are anticipated. Liberty Utilities is doing all possible for preventative measures, however they are urging their customers to be prepared.

The utility company has added additional line crews for the weekend in preparation and will address the most serious and potential safety situations in priority.

Atmospheric River bringing 6"-12" of rain to Lake Tahoe Sunday

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - The atmospheric river heading to Lake Tahoe will produce a period of intense rainfall with snow levels as high as 9000 feet early Sunday morning to Monday morning. The National Weather Service says to expect 6"-12" of rain around the Lake Tahoe basin, the Carson Range and the foothills of Carson City and Reno.

Lower elevations in Western Nevada will see 2"-4" of rain during this time frame.

Chain controls up on many roads; Highway 50 over Spooner now open

10:10 a.m. update 1/4/17 - Highway 50 over Spooner Summer is now open, but with chain or snow tire requirements from Stateline to SR28.

Update on current conditions:

US 50 from Meyers to Twin Bridges - Chains or 4WD with snow tires on all 4 wheels.
SR 89 from Christmas Valley to Hope Valley - Chains or 4WD with snow tires on all 4 wheels over the summit. At 9:32 a.m. a tree fell down onto the roadway and they are clearing it now.
SR 89 through Emerald Bay is closed at this time.
