We just wanted to let those that knew our father, Edward Joseph McCarthy, that our father passed away at 10:25pm Thursday night, October 2, 2014, in his Lake Tahoe home at the age of 93. He was surrounded by family members as he slipped away from us.

Dear Governor Brown:

I am writing to you to urge your signature into law of SB 850 (“The Bill”) by State Senator Block. The Bill as is valuable to our State’s future to increase the education and training of residents of our State.

Gary Noy, author of Sierra Stories: Tales of Dreamers, Schemers, Bigots and Rogues, will sign books and lecture as a Benefit for the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center on August 2, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The author will make a presentation and sign books to help raise money for the agency.

The event will take place at the Center’s Bookworks Bookstore located at 3330 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.

On June 13 at 7 pm Bona Fide Books will launch award-winning author Ann Gelder’s “Bigfoot and the Baby” as part of the Lake Tahoe Community College’s Writers’ Series. The event is free and open to the public.

As soon as the snow started to fly in Hope Valley, David Beck had the feeling that the short-lived "retirement" lifestyle he had been tolerating was going to be over very soon if he could have his way. On a personal level, it has been painful to see my friend Taylor going through this very difficult time with his family. It serves as a reminder about the importance for family members and friends to check in with one another often as they travel and to provide travel plans including departure and expected arrival times as well as the highways and roadways to be taken. A brief phone call or text message while filling up the gas tank or stopping for a break is always a safe practice when driving long distances. The same can be applied to those going on backcountry trips where an itinerary to family and friends — including departure and expected arrival — should be considered mandatory for hikers and campers. — Jeff Munson

SANTA CRUZ - After three weeks of searches on the sides of Highway 101 and surrounding roads in five counties, Taylor Flynn has not given up hope of finding his mother.
Flynn, the 49-year-old publisher of the Tahoe Mountain News in South Lake Tahoe, was one of the last people to see 70-year-old Deanna Brooks before her disappearance Aug. 24.

The 43rd annual Squaw Valley Community of Writers will convene again this summer with acclaimed workshops in Poetry, Fiction, Nonfiction and Screenwriting. As part of the workshop, the Squaw Valley Community of Writers will be hosting an extraordinary evening of poetry readings on Thursday, June 28, at 8 p.m. in The Olympic Village Lodge at Squaw Valley.

As part of the evening of poetry, Kazim Ali, Robert Hass, Sharon Olds, Claudia Rankine and C.D. Wright will read from their published and unpublished work, including poems written in Squaw Valley just days before.

Services for legendary radio commentator Travus T. Hipp will be held this Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Hipp died early Friday morning, May 18, at his Silver City home. He was 75, as old as the Golden Gate Bridge in his beloved San Francisco.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Gathering, gnoshing and remembering will begin at the Silver City Community Center, 385 High Street, at 10:00 a.m. Food and refreshments will be provided. Those who wish may bring more.
