CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today appointed Ted Quasula, chairman of the Nevada Indian Commission, to serve as a member of his cabinet. According to tribal representatives and State Archives, the appointment marks the first time in Nevada history that tribes will have formal representation at the cabinet level.

Woman in stable condition after crosswalk accident

UPDATED NOV. 3: A 43-year-old woman was seriously injured and taken to Renown Regional Medical Center by Care Flight after being hit in a crosswalk on Monday afternoon in Gardnerville, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
Blanca Lydia Garcia-Herrera suffered some broken bones and is in stable condition at Regional Medical Center in Reno.
An accident investigation indicates Garcia-Herrera was walking in a crosswalk to an entrance to an O’Reilly vehicle parts store at 2:37 p.m. on Highway 395 north of Kingslane, said Trooper Dan Lopez.

Consumers may get relief under new Nevada insurance law

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Consumers who have suffered an “extraordinary life event” may now ask their insurance company to provide an exception to the use of their credit information for underwriting and rating purposes, which may otherwise result in an increase in their premium rate.

“This is an important chance for some Nevadans who have suffered an unfortunate event to find relief during these trying economic times,” said Commissioner Scott J. Kipper of the Nevada Division of Insurance.

Regulation Allowing Firearms In State Parks Wins Lawmaker Approval

CARSON CITY – A regulation eliminating a prohibition on carrying firearms in state parks has been approved by the Legislative Commission. The regulation still prohibits the discharge of a firearm in a state park with some limited exceptions, such as designated target shooting areas.

The windows on the front of the Carson City IHOP were broken when a gunman opened fire inside the restaurant last month. Saturday morning, workers could be seen inside and outside of the restaurant on South Carson Street - putting in new windows. An IHOP spokesperson told KOLO 8 News Now that the restaurant is scheduled to reopen before the holidays, however she would not give an exact date. The workshops are part of a four-year update of the Regional Transportation Plan (Mobility 2035) being carried out by TMPO and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. Remembering Fallen Soldier U.S. Army Spc. Garrett Fant

Garrett Fant, the 21-year-old U.S. Army soldier who died Sept. 26, 2011 in Afghanistan, left a legacy South Lake Tahoe can be proud of, friends and family say.  The young man, who attended South Tahoe High School and considered South Lake Tahoe his home, will be remembered for his personable nature and affable character. Lake Tahoe casinos at Stateline continued healthy gains this summer, taking in $27.3 million in August, a 16.2 percent increase over 2010 figures for the same month, the Nevada gaming control board reports today.
Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $886,861,912 for the month of August 2011, 6.10 percent decrease compared to August 2010, when licensees reported a gaming win of $944,457,344. Gaming profits in Stateline in August 2010 were 23,518,599.
