ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - With a change of leadership at George Whittel High School and Zephyr Cove Elementary many rumors have been circulating around the district. Douglas County School District Superintendent Teri White has supplied a list of facts to give kids and parents an update on their schools.

Is the District closing ZCES or GWHS?
No. The District has no plans to close either school at this time.

I admit I never knew much about Miranda Lambert except to see her on award shows and for the fact she was once married to Blake Shelton. Single lane closures will take place on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) July 17-31 as the Nevada Department of Transportation clears roadside slopes.

Small sections of Kingsbury Grade will be reduced to one lane from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays July 17-31 between Daggett Summit and State Route 206 (Foothill Road). Motorists are advised to anticipate minor travel delays as traffic flaggers and pilot cars alternate directions of travel through localized road work zones. The road work schedule is subject to change.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - At the beginning of the 30th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe, the Tahoe Douglas Rotary club honored the CEO of America Century Investments, Jonathan Thomas. On the first tee in between the threesomes of Steph Curry, Justin Timberlake, Tony Romo and AJ Hark, Jordy Nelson, Aaron Rodgers, the local Rotary club presented Thomas with a Paul Harris Fellow.

The award was created by Rotary International for recognition of significant acts of service and generosity.

MEYERS, Calif. - One house is a total loss and another suffered major damage after a 4th of July fire on Tehama Drive in Meyers.

At 9:30 p.m., a call went into Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) of a house fire. At first, the caller thought the fire to be on Seneca Drive but it turned out to be at 703 Tehama Drive.

LVFPD Battalion Chief Brad Zlendick said the fire spread to a second home next door, causing major damage to the attic and sides.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Wilder Than Wild: Fires, Forest and the Future will be shown at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center amphitheater on Friday, June 28 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Besides the free showing of the film there will be a panel discussion that includes forest management experts, public land management agencies, local fire districts, local law enforcement, Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities, Liberty Utilities and more.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced he'll retire in one year.

Dr. Tarwater has been with LTUSD since 2005.

During their last meeting on June 11, the Board concluded its annual evaluation of Dr. Tarwater's performance. Though details of that evaluation are not available, they extended his contract one extra year until 2022 until they were notified of his notice of retirement.

At their June 25 meeting, the Board is scheduled to accept his retirement.

Overnight road closures will take place on State Route 28 south of Incline Village June 17 and 18 as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) places final roadway striping as part of the installation of the State Route 28 shared used path.

Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village and the U.S. 50 junction from 8:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m. nightly June 17 and 18 as final roadway striping is placed on the highway.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Indigenous Peoples' Day is replacing the Columbus Day holiday in cities around the country, and South Lake Tahoe could be next.

During their meeting on Tuesday, June 18, the City Council will vote on a resolution to rename the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples' Day in South Lake Tahoe. The first city to rename the holiday was Berkeley in 1992, followed by Santa Cruz in 1994 and since then cities across the country, as well as whole states, are adopting the new holiday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Eleven teachers and six instructional and library assistants are retiring this year from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). Together they have worked in education for 465 years.

Mazda has an “all new” Mazda 3. It has some resemblance to the prior generation Mazda 3 but it is a new fourth generation and it had a new designer, Yasutake Tsuchida. Tsuchida continued with the “Kodo” design theme using a very similar, aggressive front end while smoothing out the body ridges and incorporating a sleeker, less complicated rear end. It uses a similar window line except for the “Hofmeister kink” now present in the termination of the rear side windows. It is a better-looking car (then its prior generation) and retains the title of the best-looking compact car.

STATELINE, Nev. - Expect delays on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade/SR 207 starting Monday, June 3 as Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) crews fill roadway cracking.

Single lane closures will take place from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays through approximately June 14 between Tramway Drive and Foothill Road. Motorists are advised to give extra travel time and to anticipate travel delays of up to 15 minutes as traffic flaggers and pilot cars alternate directions of travel.

The road work schedule is subject to change.

To celebrate the beginning of climbing season the Tahoe Climbing Coalition is sponsoring a garbage and micro-trash pick-up on the Eagle Lake trail on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 1 at 10:00 a.m.

Come with water (reusable bottle), sun protection and gloves, and they'll provide the rest. They will be meeting at the parking lot/trailhead of Eagle Falls.

The clean-up will be followed up with a crag meet-up at the 90-foot wall.

If you choose to park in the parking lot at Eagle Falls bring $5 exact change for parking. There is limited parking along SR89 outside the parking lot.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - What a difference a year can make! In 2018, the annual test of Lake Tahoe's clarity value made a drastic change and improved to 70.9 feet. This is 10.5 more feet than was seen in 2017.

In the release of their annual report, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in Incline Village said a return to more normal weather and streamflow conditions was responsible for this change.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A change to the weather pattern for Lake Tahoe is expected next week as incoming low-pressure systems provide increased winds,
cooler temperatures, and wetter conditions.

There is even a chance of snow on Friday.

Drier air is pushing into the northern half of the forecast area on Monday with a shift to a wetter, cooler pattern on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

5.10.19 Update: On Thursday, May 9, 2019, recycled water from a South Tahoe Public Utility District Luther Pass storage tank leaked into Grass Lake Creek. Water samples collected from Grass Lake Creek immediately following the spill showed no change in coliform bacteria, meaning the spill caused no significant impact to water quality. A leak from the overflow pipe inside the tank was the cause of the spill. The tank has been drained and taken off-line until repairs can be made.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public has another chance to speak to the South Tahoe Public Utility District about a proposed rate change during their board meeting on Thursday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m.

There have been several meetings and workshops about water and sewer rates in South Lake Tahoe since January.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One could feel the air let out of a South Lake Tahoe courtroom as visiting Judge Gary Mullen read his decision to the five defendants, their five lawyers and family members in attendance, one that tossed out their request to drop murder charges against all of the suspects in the robbery and murder in 2016 of Dennis Wright.

Judge Mullen declared California Senate Bill 1437 unconstitutional. The bill was signed by then-California Governor Jerry Brown in September 2018 and changed the liability for accomplices to felony murder.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting May 25, 2019, there will be no more youth staying in the Placerville Juvenile Detention Facility. After a decision by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors in February, South Lake Tahoe's Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) will be the only youth facility in the county to serve those in the justice system 18-years-old and younger, for now.

There are several reasons for the changes including an aging facility, increasing costs and the fact that fewer youth are working their way through the juvenile justice system.

The Tahoe Climate Change Action Network will be hosting a community forum on forest health and forest/fuel management policies in the Lake Tahoe Basin on May 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Join your neighbors and local Natural Resources professionals in forest ecology, forest and fire sciences, and fuel management.

The forum will take place at the Lake Tahoe Community College's Aspen Room in South Lake Tahoe.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The snow is melting and temperatures are rising, signaling the change of seasons in Lake Tahoe, and the opening of campgrounds, beaches and other recreational areas.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will soon begin the process of opening their facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin, weather and snow conditions permitting,

The first two beaches to open will be Baldwin and Nevada with an opening date planned for this Saturday, April 27, 2019.
