Tahoe Chamber event brings in $2,550 and food for Bread and Broth

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce's annual Connect for a Cause on January 18 had a great turnout from the community, bring in both cash and food donations for Bread and Broth.

Over 100 people attended the charity mixer at Riva Grill and they enjoyed appetizers and Riva Grill’s signature cocktail, Wet Woodies during the event.

Bread and Broth serves the community with weekly food giveaways and two hot meals a week, and their Bread and Broth 4 Kids programs gives over 170 South Lake Tahoe children in grades K-8 a backpack of weekend food.

Returning for his second Adopt a Day of Nourishment sponsorship of the year, Jeremy Woodford hosted Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on January 15th. Jeremy returned with Barbara and Craig Brittain who also volunteered at Jeremy’s January 1st sponsorship. This trio of helpers assisted the B&B volunteers in serving the 76 dinner guests who came to St. Theresa Grace Hall for a hot, nutritious meal. At the Mexican themed dinner, the diners had a choice of beef enchiladas, pork enchiladas, refried beans, festive veggies, green salad, fruit salad and a varies of pies, cookies and cakes for dessert.

The Tahoe Coalition for Homeless (TCH) made a presentation to the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) board members Tuesday, updating them on the Warm Room, and how things have gone since opening in their new home January 1, 2018.

24th annual Classy Crab Dinner in South Lake Tahoe

The very popular Monsignor Wallace Classy Crab Dinner will be held at St. Theresa Church's Grace Hall in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. For 24 years church volunteers have been putting on the fundraising event, always a "must do" on many calendars.

Starting at 6:00 p.m., attendees will not only get a crab dinner but also be treated to a silent auction, raffle, and the "famous and lively" dessert auction at 7:45 p.m.

SnowGlobe wrap up: Global attention, donations, the environment and fields

As the tents are taken down, the stage removed and all other components of SnowGlobe disappear for another year, an evaluation of the Community Play Field and other aspects of the seventh annual event in South Lake Tahoe are being made. There may be negatives to the popular event that draws in 20,000 people a day, there are also many positives to be celebrated.

There is more to the three-day festival, SnowGlobe, than music and crowds, a side of the event many aren't aware of.

Tahoe Warm Room to open in new location January 1

For the past week, South Lake Tahoe's homeless have been able to get out of the cold at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, but come January 1 they will be moving into their new home.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will open their warm room at 1195 Rufus Allen Blvd, the City owned property that once housed Unity at the Lake. Their operations will begin at 7:00 p.m. The will be open daily from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. until April 1, 2018.

With the new year just around the corner, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding the public of several new laws or changes to existing law that, unless otherwise noted, take effect January 1, 2018.

Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe opens on Christmas Eve

There will be two homes for the Warm Room this winter, and the first one opens on Christmas Eve at 7:00 p.m.

From December 24 - December 31, 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) will open the Warm Room at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church located at 2733 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Access to the room will be through the lower parking lot in the back of the church, not through the front door.

"We appreciate the support of the local faith community for rallying behind our common missions of service," said the Coalition.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless one step closer to opening Warm Room

After meeting with the City, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, police, neighbors and other interested parties, the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) is one step closer to opening a warm room for the winter in South Lake Tahoe and could be open by January 1, 2018.

Possible new home for South Lake Tahoe homeless warming room

At the last count there were 82 homeless persons and ten homeless families living in South Lake Tahoe, and to help protect them during the winter, the Lake Tahoe Homeless Coalition has operated a Warm Room in the city.

They too are now homeless and asked the City Council on Tuesday to move into the city-owned building at 1195 Rufus Allen Boulevard, the former home of Unity at the Lake church.

Choirs present "A Christmas of Hope, Peace & Joy" holiday concerts

The Tahoe Choir & Lake Tahoe Community College Chorus will present their holiday concert, "A Christmas of Hope, Peace, & Joy" in South Lake Tahoe December 1 and 3, 2017 at St. Theresa Church.

On Friday, December 1, the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, December 3, at at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets may be obtained from choir members, at the LTCC Bookstore, or one hour before each performance at the church. $2 of each ticket to be donated to the Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Fund. Ticket prices are: $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, free for children under 5.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Bread & Broth Monday

The Bread & Broth program at St. Theresa Catholic Church is observing its 28th anniversary of serving meals to community members in need by offering a special Thanksgiving dinner on Monday, November 20, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Grace Hall.

St. Theresa Grace Hall is located at 1401 Lyons Ave in South Lake Tahoe.

The meal is open to all members of the community just as it has been every Monday at Grace Hall since 1989.

Ida R. Grasso 1919 ~ 2017

Ida R. Grasso was born in Lawrence, Mass. on July 5, 1919 and passed away on October 27, 2017 in Carson City, Nev. Ida has lived in Torrance, California since 1955.

Ida is survived by son, Anthony J. (Tony) Grasso and daughter-in-law, Teri L. Grasso of Lake Tahoe, Nev; daughter, Beverly Ann Grasso of Sacramento, Calif; 7 grandchildren: Nicholas, Christopher, Katherine and Meredith Grasso; Bruce and Brian Carr and Nicole Jordan; 4 great-grandchildren: Carey, Jr, Brianna and Taylor Jordan, and Jason Baggett.

Bread & Broth in need of food/cash donations for annual Thanksgiving Dinner

Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project closer to summer 2018 construction

The updated Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project was presented to the community Thursday night, with changes incorporated after input from the public at their first meeting August 17, 2017.

Funded by grants, the .6 mile stretch of Sierra Boulevard starting at Highway 50 will have Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and water quality improvements.

Two ways to help South Lake Tahoe area residents this Thanksgiving

Bread & Broth and Live Violence Free both have opportunities for the South Lake Tahoe community to help those less fortunate this Thanksgiving.

Bread & Broth is providing a free Thanksgiving Dinner to the community on Monday, November 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at St. Theresa Church. This is the non-profit's 28th year of serving meals to those in need.

Public input sought on 3-year plan for Mental Health Services Act.

The Behavioral Health Division of the El Dorado County (EDC) Health and Human Services Agency invites the public to provide input on the County’s Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Three Year Plan Annual Update for Fiscal Year 2018/19. Community members can provide input by email, online survey or at an upcoming community meeting.

Bread & Broth needs volunteers for their growing programs

Bread & Broth, an all volunteer organization whose mission is to ease hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, has volunteer opportunities for those who are looking to give back and join their ‘heart warming’ efforts to help others.

Bread & Broth (B&B) has grown over the last eight years and now offers the following programs:

- Monday Meal, which is a full-course dinner service every Monday at St. Theresa Grace Hall from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
- Second Serving at Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church which provides soup and a simple entrée every Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Susan (Susie) Patricia Laney 11/24/67 - 9/12/17

Susan (Susie) Patricia Laney, age 49, passed away peacefully at home on September 12, 2017 surrounded by her family after a two-year battle with cancer.

Susie was born November 24, 1967 with her surviving twin sister, Lisa Watson of South Lake Tahoe, California to Paul Watson of Gardnerville, Nevada and Beverly Pinkley, deceased.

Low cost flu clinics in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Nursing, will begin conducting low-cost community flu shot clinics on September 27, 2017, with additional clinics offered through November.

First peek into Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project

The City of South Lake Tahoe is creating a new design of Sierra Boulevard that will introduce Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size and lighted sidewalks. Called the Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project, work is expected to get underway on the .6 mile stretch of road in the summer of 2018, but not everyone is happy about it.

At the first of two community information meetings on Thursday night, City and NCE representatives gave an overview of the planned project, had a question and answer period and shared preliminary designs of Sierra Blvd.

Labor Day weekend in Lake Tahoe full of activities to replace fireworks

With the cancellation of the 19-year long tradition of fireworks over Labor Day in South Lake Tahoe due to budget constraints, the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority and other local businesses have pulled together to present a full menu of things to do on the South Shore from a laser light show to concerts and a carnival.

Summer Bread & Broth 4 Kids partnership with Vail Resorts a success

Over 700 bags of food have been distributed to the youth of South Lake Tahoe so far this summer thanks to a partnership between Bread & Broth 4 Kids (B&B4K) and Vail Resorts/Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Vail CEO Rob Katz and his wife Elana Amsterdam donated $125,000 to get a summer food program for youth up to the age of 18 started on the South Shore, and Bread & Broth and Family Resource Center worked together with Heavenly to make it happen.

Surrounded by family at his home in Carson City, Paul Francis D'Anneo passed from this life to the next July 20, 2017. Paul was born in Oakland, CA on November 24, 1933 to Arnaldo and Ruth (Dobbins) D'Anneo. He married Barbara Moore in Berkeley, CA. Having attended Cal Poly, he worked as an electronics engineer.

El Dorado County Food Bank returns to SLT with supplies

The El Dorado County Food Bank will be returning to South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Young Singers of Lambersart stop in South Lake Tahoe for free concert

Maitrise des Hauts de France, the Young Singers of Lambersart, will be in South Lake Tahoe on Monday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. at St Theresa Catholic Church.

Under the direction of Conductor Jerome Cupelli, the boys' choir is touring California, Nevada and Arizona from July 20 to August 8. Their concert is open to the public and free of charge.

Movie The Appeal of Suicide to be shown in Lake Tahoe

By the time you watch the movie clip in this story, one individual will have ended their life by suicide because they think they have no other choice. According to the World Health Organization, a massive 800,000 people take their lives every year—one death every 40 seconds. That’s over 2,000 a day.

A free showing of the movie "EXIT: The Appeal of Suicide" will be shown on the South Shore on Saturday, July 15 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m at Tahoe Community Church in Stateline. There will be a question and answer period Q & A after the movie.

Plug pulled on Lake Tahoe Labor Day fireworks show

In an effort to encourage visitors to the South Shore to stay over on Sunday night during the Labor Day weekend, the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) started a fireworks show in Lake Tahoe in 1998.

With a changing school year calendar and lack of Sunday night stays, the Labor Day fireworks show is no more.

"The lodging and tourism board (LTVA and Tahoe Douglas Visitor's Authority, TDVA) have had discussions for awhile about the Labor Day fireworks," said LTVA and TDVA Executive Director Carol Chaplin. "Lodging was finding their Sunday night reservations were soft."

LTCC honors longtime Lake Tahoe dentist with Distinguished Alumni Award

Chautauqua of Snowshoe Thompson

Steve Hale will portray the legendary mailman of the Sierra, Jon A. “Snowshoe Thompson, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, June 21, at 6:30 pm.

When Jon Thompson put on his 8-foot skis and heavy leather mail pack in 1856, he skied to Genoa and into history. His two to three day 90-mile crossings (one way) carrying the mail and valuable packages of up to 100 pounds on his back through the snow have never been physically duplicated, not even with modern equipment. This extraordinary feat has become part of the legacy and spirit of the pioneer American West.

Vail Resorts CEO gives $125,000 to fund South Lake Tahoe summer kids food program

Children from the South Shore of Lake Tahoe no longer need to go hungry during the summer months. Thanks to a generous donation of $125,000 by Rob Katz, Vail Resorts CEO, and his wife Elana Amsterdam, “Summer B&B 4 Kids” will launch on Wednesday, June 21, with a focus on helping the over 50 percent of local children who are receiving free or subsidized school meals during the school year.

On Monday, May 15th, members of St. Theresa Church’s Knights of Columbus were doing just that as they volunteered their time to serve at B&B’s Monday Meal. Food Bank returns to SLT with food supplies and new location

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will return to South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, May 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the parking lot of St. Theresa's Catholic Church.

Bags of emergency supplemental groceries will be distributed to qualified recipients. The Mobile Food Pantry makes stops in remote areas of the county from SLT to Placerville. While in town they will also stop by the Family Resource Center and Bread & Broth to drop off food supplies to those agencies.

Its going to be a great summer of music at the Harveys Outdoor Arena with 13 concerts booked to date for the Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series. Linkin Park with Machine Gun Kelly to play at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert series

Linkin Park announced their One More Light World Tour today, and they'll be making a stop at the lake on Friday, September 1 at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys.

They will hit the stage with special guest Machine Gun Kelly.

In an effort to put tickets into the hands of real fans, first access to tickets for the One More Light World Tour will be reserved exclusively for fans – not scalpers or bots, just as Eric Church has done with his tour (he follows Linkin Park on September 2 and 3).

Eric Church heads to the South Shore for two shows at outdoor arena

Country music singer/songwriter Eric Church has announced the second half of his 2017 "Holdin' My Own" tour, and it begins on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe which he makes a stop at the Outdoor Concert Arena at Harveys on September 2 and 3.

Each show begins at 7:00 p.m.

Church's 62 stop tour has been thrilling audiences with three-hours of top music. It is unknown at this time what opening act(s), if any, will be with Church when he starts the final eight shows of 2017 in Lake Tahoe.

Ticketmaster will be selling tickets to the public on May 19.

Through the generosity of the John McDougall Pay It Forward Lake Tahoe Community Fund held at the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, Bread & Broth provided a roasted chicken dinner with all of the fixings at its Monday Meal on April 24. The $250 grant funds enabled B&B to serve 107 meals and provide for 26 takeout meals to the grateful dinner guests who arrived at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall for the weekly Monday Meal.

Join in on helping others during "Pay it Forward Week" in South Lake Tahoe

Most places take just one day to officially "Pay it Forward" but one person in the South Lake Tahoe community has made it his goal to cause a ripple effect of kindness through the community for a whole week.

International "Pay it Forward" day is on Friday, April 28 and more than 80 countries and 70 cities across America have made proclamations to join the global initiative and make a difference by creating a huge ripple of kindness across the world. Small acts of kindness, when multiplied by millions of people, can literally change the world for the better.
