UC Davis scientists, staff and students are unfolding the long, black mats and enhancing them with rebar, brass grommets and valves that will hold the barriers in place underwater and enable scientific analysis of the project.

The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund presented a $27,500 check to the California Tahoe Conservancy yesterday to allow completion of the Lower Blackwood Creek and Eagle Rock Restoration Project, a critical creek restoration and trailhead project on Lake Tahoe’s west shore.

Join thousands of volunteers nationwide to help keep our waterways clean and blue on September 15 for National Beach Cleanup Day. The League to Save Lake Tahoe will be coordinating a cleanup at Kings Beach State Recreation Area from 9 a.m. to noon. The League welcomes volunteers of all ages and abilities. Other Tahoe-area organizations will also be coordinating cleanups along the lake's shoreline and its tributaries

Founders Circle members of a Lake Tahoe nonprofit donated $55,000 at Sunday's annual Tahoe Fund Summer Dinner and croquet party for three specific projects that will improve lake clarity and recreational opportunities in the Tahoe Basin. The money raised by the Fund is for shovel-ready public projects that require additional private support to be completed, and was in addition to the more than $120,000 raised by the dinner for the organization.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service and the Washoe Tribe for a volunteer beach clean-up of Tahoe's East Shore beaches, including Skunk Harbor and Chimney Beach. Volunteers will be helping to clean-up these secluded and beautiful Lake Tahoe beaches. Keeping Tahoe clean and blue is a collaborative effort where local residents and visitors alike can make a difference.

Lake Tahoe will be thrust in the spotlight again when scientists, public agencies and elected officials meet Aug. 13 for the 16th annual Lake Tahoe Summit at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. To be discussed with great interest is the protection and health of Lake Tahoe's fragile environment and economy.
“The health of the environment and the health of the economy at Tahoe are linked,” Derek Kauneckis, political science professor and researcher at the University of Nevada, Reno said. “And the collaborations that have been established at the Lake have set the stage for future efforts.”

Natural forces and human actions have affected the lake's clarity, physics, chemistry and biology since 1968, when UC Davis first began continuous monitoring of Lake Tahoe.
Despite an extreme weather year, overall clarity at Lake Tahoe improved in 2011. Yet underlying trends portray a more complex picture of the Lake Tahoe ecosystem, according to the annual “Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2012,” released today by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.

The clarity of where medical marijuana in South Lake Tahoe stands is like walking into a room of pot smokers. Something smells funny and the air is murky. Accusations flew Tuesday during the City Council meeting, with it clear the electeds are fed up with what they consider is illegal activity occurring at some of the dispensaries.

SAND HARBOR, Nev. — Just after dawn on Sunday, with a white moon still visible over mountain-ringed Lake Tahoe, Fred Jackson maneuvered his small boat into clear water about 35 feet deep.
“Hard right — back up,” said his nephew, Justin Pulliam, standing on the edge of the boat and peering at a shadow at the bottom of the lake.
“You got it?” Mr. Jackson asked.

Lake Tahoe Basin residents and visitors are invited to help remove one of Tahoe’s most prolific aquatic invasive weeds, Eurasian watermilfoil, during a community volunteer event at Baldwin Beach on Sunday, July 15.
The project is a partnership of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Preventing the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species is a top priority for all three agencies.

Scientists now estimate close to 300-million crayfish in Lake Tahoe and they say that is adding up to clarity problems for the lake.
"The crayfish are like cattle on the landscape, moving across the lake bottom," says Dr. Sudeep Chandra who is a lake specialist and a professor of limnology at UNR. "They eat dead algae and fertilize more algae blooms and we think that is impacting the clarity of the lake."

The North and South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce leaders at Lake Tahoe have joined together to launch a Region-wide public participation campaign to harness the groundswell of support for a new vision to restore and revitalize the Basin. Called TahoeFuture.org, the campaign will focus, over the next 8 months, on two critical land-use and transportation plans that create a blueprint for a revitalized Lake Tahoe.

Insights into how policies have evolved at Lake Tahoe to better focus efforts on the pollutants causing Tahoe’s declining clarity are discussed in an interview hosted by Michelle Sweeney at TahoeProject.org. Interviewed are Dr. Nicole Beck, principal and founder of ecosystem science and design firm 2NDNATURE based in Santa Cruz, and Jason Drew, associate scientist at Nichols Consulting Engineers.

The Lake Tahoe Paddle Festival is a solstice celebration of human powered watercraft featuring ancient art to state of the art boats, boards and paddles. Several environmental gains over the last five years have been made at the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s “Threshold Evaluation Report” released Wednesday, which highlights water quality as a continued area of concern.

The comprehensive report offers a snapshot of the health of the ecosystem in the Tahoe Basin by documenting the status and trends of more than 100 environmental standards ranging from air and water quality to fish and wildlife. The biggest improvements were documented in air and water quality, and scenic resources.
