A Trio of Art Exhibits and Opening Receptions Coming to LTCC

Artists and fans of beautiful art have at least three great reasons to visit Lake Tahoe Community College this autumn. Three new art exhibits will be open to the public through December 5, 2014. All three will launch with an Artist’s Reception and talk on Thursday, Oct. 2 starting at 5 p.m.

The entire community is welcome to all three exhibits to meet the artists, ask questions about their process, and enjoy some light refreshments.

City gives support to Lake Tahoe Community College's Measure F

Lake Tahoe Community College gained the support of the South Lake Tahoe City Council today in their pursuit of $55,000,000 in bond funds through Measure F. The Council voted unanimously to adopt the support resolution.

Dr. Kindred Murillo, Superintendent/President of the Lake Tahoe Community College District, was on hand at Tuesday's City Council meeting to provide an explanation of what the bond would mean to the South Shore community and answer any questions the five council members had.

Lake Tahoe Unified students head back to school

It's once again time to hear the ring of the school bell, to see the yellow buses going through the neighborhoods, and hear the happy voices from the school playgrounds.

The summer vacation ends Monday for students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District as walk, ride or drive to their first day of school.

Classes at South Tahoe High School start at 7:55 a.m. and school is out at 2:40 p.m. South Tahoe Middle School starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 1:55 p.m.

The four elementary schools have different start and end times:
Bijou, grades K-5 runs from 8:35 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

New guidance and planning program at LTCC helps keep students on track

Guidance and Planning for Success, or as it's known on campus, GPS, is a new state mandated program that requires all students at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) to complete a new student orientation, take Math and English assessment tests so they are placed in courses that match their needs, and to work one-on-one with an LTCC counselor on a personalized Educational Plan prior to enrollment.

GPS is required for both new and returning students.

City and Chamber bring back popular business coaching program

Tahoe Tactical Team, the popular business coaching program, is returning due to a federal grant received by the City of South Lake Tahoe. They have joined a partnership with the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce to bring back the program which helps new business owners start up an enterprise or existing business owners take their businesses to the next level.

Specialized yoga classes for M.S. patients in South Lake Tahoe

It has been shown that people who suffer from the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) find relief in yoga due to it's emphasis on relaxation, breathing and deliberate movements.

Yoga classes to assist in relief from the symptoms of MS are now available for free in South Lake Tahoe at the Pilates Studio Lake Tahoe.

County Services for South Lake Tahoe Disabled Job Seekers

Local residents who are disabled and looking for work have free resources at the South Lake Tahoe office of Connections-One Stop. Special funding for school tuition, paid work experience, job training and other services ends August 30, 2014.

"The El Dorado County Connections - One Stop program can help disabled individuals search for a good job, develop a quality resume, enhance job interview skills and more," said Jenny Wilson, Program Supervisor for Connections - One Stop.

FitKid Summer Sports Camp Held in South Lake Tahoe

There is one more chance this summer for kids to attend South Lake Tahoe's FitKid Summer Sports Camp put on by Lake Tahoe Community College and Tahoe Center for Orthopedics.

The final camp will be held July 28 through August 1.

Campers, ages 7 to 13, enjoy a week-long summer sports camps that focuses on improving health, wellness, and athletic performance. Campers learn: proper exercise techniques, team-building, sports-specific techniques, and how to make healthy nutritional choices.

The cost is $185 (includes snacks, camp t-shirt, and water bottle.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for First South Lake Tahoe Community Garden

The South Tahoe Family Resource Center, next to Bijou Community School, will be holding a ground breaking ceremony from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. for their new community garden.

The Family Resource Center (FRC) community garden will showcase a variety of permaculture techniques that help increase productivity and extend our short growing season. The grant will fund a permanent fence to protect the FRC garden as well as garden-related materials, seeds and soil.

Gardens 4 A Healthy Tahoe Awarded Champions For Healthy Kids Grant

Fresh produce is making its way to South Lake Tahoe thanks to the collaboration and volunteerism of community members working together as part of the group Gardens 4 A Healthy Tahoe. This group was recently founded by the Human Health and Social Wellbeing working group of the Lake Tahoe Sustainability Collaborative. In partnership, these two groups applied for the Champions for Healthy Kids Grant through the General Mills Foundation.

Public Invited to LTCC Soccer Showcase

The Lake Tahoe Community College has invited the public to head out to the Community Ball Fields on Monday, June 2 at 8 p.m. to see a showcase of the soccer classes. Many of the players will be trying out for the brand-new intercollegiate men’s and women’s soccer teams that will make their debut in Fall of 2014.

This is a nice opportunity to check out the talent that likely will take the field for LTCC come Fall.

Graduating Seniors at South Tahoe High No Longer Required to Buy Caps & Gowns

Walking down the aisle on the South Tahoe High School football field is a long standing tradition for graduating seniors.

While that tradition is in tact, the way caps and gowns are handled are changing.

Changes in the California Education Code - EC 49010(a) - now classify the graduation ceremonies as a educational activity which mandates students can no longer be charged a fee for the required cap and gown purchase.

Free Driver Safety Class Offered by the CHP

Start Smart is aimed at helping newly licensed and future licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. The program was created in an effort to preemptively reduce the incidence of teen injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions.

Transitional Kindergarten Classes to be Held at Tahoe Valley Elementary

Children not 5 years old by the time school starts in the fall are unable to attend kindergarten due to a new state law, but the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will have Transitional Kindergarten (TK).

The Kindergarten Readiness Act, signed into law by Gov. Schwarzenegger in 2010, changed the kindergarten entry date from Dec. 2 to Sept. 1 so that children enter kindergarten at age 5. The law phases in the new age requirement by moving the cutoff date one month a year for three years, beginning this fall for children born between Nov. 2 and Dec. 2.

Meer words cannot describe what volunteers mean to Barton Skilled Nursing Facility residents.

Barton Skilled Nursing volunteers wear many hats. They play inspiring music, bring communion, and call bingo. Volunteers turn an ordinary birthday party into a trip down memory lane with music from the past. Musicians share ukulele, piano, and organ music with our residents. They honor our vets. Some volunteers bring in their pets to lick faces and shower our residents with love. Other groups bring church to Skilled Nursing residents every Sunday.

South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Departments Participate in Active Shooter Exercises

In order to be trained and prepared to handle active shooter situations, the South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Departments took part in exercises at Lake Tahoe Community College on Thursday, April 3. They will continue the exercises on Monday at Tahoe Valley Elementary.

Both training sessions take place at school campuses that are on Spring Break so students and classes are not disturbed. The purpose of the exercises are to give the departments an opportunity to work together in order to be prepared should an active shooter incident take place within the city limits.

Local Elementary School May Be Rebranded as Sierra House Mountain Academy

The idea of Sierra House Elementary School becoming the Sierra House Mountain Academy was presented to the Lake Tahoe Unified School Board this week. If this becomes reality, Sierra House would join the other themed South Lake Tahoe elementary schools: Meyers is the Environmental Magnet School and Tahoe Valley is the Performing Arts Magnet School.

Live Violence Free to Raise Community-Wide Awareness

April is a big month for Live Violence Free. It is national Child Abuse Prevention, as well as, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The entire month is dedicated to honoring victims and survivors of both child abuse and sexual assault. With 80 percent of sexual assault victims being under the age of 30 and a report of child abuse made every ten seconds, it is vital we stand up against the dangers of the abuse. As two of our primary focuses at LVF, we are illuminating the truths and celebrating the efforts to combat the violence directly impacting our community.

Ty Sprock of South Lake Tahoe to Compete in Junior World Ski Championships

South Lake Tahoe may just have a future Olympian in its midst. 18 year old Whittell High School graduate Ty Sprock is one of 16 elite U.S. athletes that will be competing in the 2014 FIS Alpine Junior World Championships in Slovakia February 26 through March 6.

LTCC Announcing 40th Anniversary Plans at March Press Conference

The Lake Tahoe Community College District was voted into existence 40 years ago, on March 5, 1974. The College has big plans to celebrate its anniversary with a number of fun and educational events this year. Members of the media, the community, and college staff and faculty are all welcome to attend a press conference on Wednesday, March 5th at 11 a.m. to hear the College’s plans to mark its 40th year, and to honor its history. The conference will be held at the Econo Lodge at 2659 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, where the College first offered classes and welcomed its first students.

Olympic Heritage Week Begins in Lake Tahoe

During the winter of 1960, athletes from around the world came to Lake Tahoe to participate in the Winter Olympic Games. The biathlon and cross country events were held in what is now Sugar Pine Point State Park. A celebration of the area's snow heritage begins Saturday with a series of events to showcase makes the region so special.

Tahoe Winter Trek Program Begins in South Lake Tahoe

The popular South Lake Tahoe winter education program for fifth graders, Winter Trek Conservation Education, begins a new series of classes in January.

Local teachers may reserve a spot for their class beginning on Monday, December 16 by calling the Forest Service at 530-543-2694, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Winter Trek begins Tuesday, January 7, 2014, and continues through March 27, 2014, weather permitting. Field trips are generally three hours long and are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Kirkwood to Offer Free Backcountry Awareness Clinics at San Francisco Sports Basement Stores

Expedition Kirkwood will be holding free backcountry awareness clinics at the Sports Basement stores at the Presidio and on Bryant Street the weekend of Dec. 2-3.

“Most incidents that occur in the backcountry happen because people are not prepared to be there,” explains Jon Copeland, Director of Expedition Kirkwood. “Two of our goals at Expedition Kirkwood are to educate people on making smart decisions when in the backcountry and to train them on how to make a predetermined plan.”

School and Community Safety at the Forefront

It was just 3 minutes from the time a gun was shot today in Sparks, Nevada until the first police officer arrived at Sparks Middle School. In that 3 minutes, one math teacher was killed, two students were shot and the young shooter shot and killed himself.

Free "Healthy Aging" Series Coming to South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency and Active Aging program are presenting a free educational series in South Lake Tahoe. The series will give instruction and support to persons aged 60 years and older and to their family members and friends. The classes will be held on Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. beginning October 21 through November 25, 2013 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel (formerly Embassy Suites), located at 4130 South Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe. LTCC Teachers Honored for Excellence

Lake Tahoe Community College English instructor Michael O’Laughlin and Sociology/Anthropology instructor Dr. Scott Lukas have both been honored for their outstanding work in the classroom. O’Laughlin was selected by LTCC students as their Teacher of the Year, and Dr. Lukas was chosen by his fellow faculty members as the Distinguished Faculty Award recipient. The winners will each personally receive $500 thanks to a generous donation by the LTCC Foundation. They’ll also each get to direct another $500 towards the LTCC program or scholarship or classroom materials of their choice.

South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade

More than 2 dozen decorated cars and trucks carrying South Tahoe High students lined Highway 50 on Saturday morning for the Annual South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade. The school's Pep Band, Lady Vikings, Football and Soccer teams, cheerleaders, Homecoming Prince and Princesses, alumni and classes as well as Pop Warner cheerleaders and players joined in the fun. Candy was tossed from passing cars and there were lots of cheering parents and residents along the parade route.

South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade

A week of homecoming festivities at South Tahoe High begins on Saturday, September 28 with the annual parade through town. At 10 am the parade will begin at the LTUSD bus garage on Al Tahoe Boulevard and head along Highway 50 to the high school.

Trucks full of students, cars carrying alumni, cheerleaders, teams, the pep band and more will join the parade route.

The South Tahoe High Alumni Foundation has planned the event which will also include members of the classes of 1963, 1964, 1966, 1968 and 1973.

LTCC: Back in Session

With class schedules, books and other supplies in arm, 2,351 students headed back to school today as the Fall Quarter began at Lake Tahoe Community College. Though the numbers are comparable to last year, school officials have seen a shift to more full time students at the college. According to Tom Greene, VP of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at LTCC, there are seeing more students who are working towards credits to transfer to a four year college.
