State Route 89 (Placer County): Work is set to resume on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

Volunteers needed for Amgen Tour's South Lake Tahoe competition

The Amgen Tour of California South Lake Tahoe Organizing Committee is seeking 300 volunteers for the combined stages for men and women on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

The men’s elite race Stage 5 will begin in Lodi, Calif. at 10 a.m., and finish around 3:45 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe totaling 132.4 miles. The women’s Stage 1 will start at 10:50 a.m. and finish approximately at 2:00 p.m. at Heavenly, totaling 72.7 miles.

NDOT: Slow down and focus to eliminate Work Zone crashes

With the return of road improvement projects along Lake Tahoe and other Nevada roads, the Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada Highway Patrol are reminding motorist to drive safely in road work zones, not only during this week which is National Work Zone Awareness Week, but all year long.

From July 1, 2014 to July 1, 2015, there were 166 crashes in Washoe County work zones, resulting in 53 injuries and two fatalities. Statewide in Nevada, these numbers were significantly hire during the same periord: 1020 crashes, 612 injuries and 12 fatalities.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Chiapa Drive to Kyburz Avenue: Motorists can expect intermittent full highway closures at various locations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for survey work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Truckee Drive to Rubicon Trail/Carson Avenue in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect the #2 lane and right shoulder closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday for utility work.

Cave Rock tunnel extension topic of NDOT community meeting

Construction details of this summer's project at Cave Rock will be revealed during a Lake Tahoe community meeting on Thursday, April 14 in the Zephyr Cove Elementary multipurpose room from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is hosting the public meeting to tell residents about the project that will enhance traveler safety on U.S. 50 in the Cave Rock area.

Full closure of Highway 50 in El Dorado Hills early Sunday

On Sunday, March 20, the Transportation Division of El Dorado County’s Community Development Agency will implement full closures of both directions of U.S. 50 between El Dorado Hills Boulevard and Bass Lake Road, as well as closures of the Latrobe Road on-ramp to eastbound U.S. Highway 50, the Bass Lake Road on-ramp to westbound U.S. Highway 50, and White Rock Road between Valley View Parkway and Entrada Circle. Closures are as follows:

Eastbound Closures on Sunday Morning, March 20th

 Eastbound lanes from Latrobe Road to Bass Lake Road will be closed from 6:00 am to 8:00 am.

South Lake Tahoe students get minimum day for Amgen Tour

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District has changed the school calendar to accommodate the anticipated road closures needed for the upcoming Amgen Tour.

Due to the rolling lane closures at approximately the same time schools are let out, students will get a minimum day on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

Amgen officials said more than 350 of the world’s top male and female cyclists will challenge themselves in Lake Tahoe.

Highway 50 to be closed in both directions Sunday in El Dorado Hills

The Transportation Division of El Dorado County’s Community Development Agency will implement full closures of both directions of U.S. 50 between El Dorado Hills Boulevard and Bass Lake Road, as well as closures of the Latrobe Road on-ramp to eastbound U.S. Highway 50, the Bass Lake Road on-ramp to westbound U.S. Highway 50, and White Rock Road between Valley View Parkway and Entrada Circle. Lake Tahoe area roadwork for week of February 15-20

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) from the Coloma School House to Mt. Murphy Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for utility work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Upper Truckee Road to Transit Way in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday for survey work.

Cave Rock tunnel to be extended 60 feet this summer

The westbound, lakeside Cave Rock tunnel entrance will get a makeover this summer, one that will stop rocks from falling onto Highway 50, add lighting to the inside of the tunnel as well as adding water quality improvements.

Devin Cartwright, Supervisor with the Nevada Department of Transportation's Roadway Design Division, spoke to the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association Thursday, giving them a overview of the project that will bring with it one lane of traffic in each direction, causing some traffic delays, 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week from May to October, 2016.

Chain controls and road closures as latest storm passes through Lake Tahoe

4:15 P.M. UPDATE: Road controls are back in place, along with closure of I-80 at the Nevada/California state line due to a 25-car pile-up.

Traffic on Highway 50 over Echo Summit is still slow moving with the back up for westbound travel backed up near the intersection of Hwy 50 and 89 at the Y.

Disneyland to close attractions to make way for new Star Wars land

To make way for "Star Wars," Disneyland is about to launch its largest expansion ever, which means shutting down a significant chunk of the Anaheim theme park.

In January, 10 attractions and eateries will close — some temporarily, some permanently — only a few months after the resort hiked the price of annual passes as much as 31%. This spring, Disneyland's biggest rival, Universal Studios Hollywood, plans to unveil a widely anticipated Harry Potter attraction.

Winter Storm warning for Lake Tahoe: 6" to 12" on Sunday

3:20 p.m. update 12/13/15: Chains controls have expanded. Chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires from 9 miles east of Placerville to 3 miles east of Pollock Pines, then snow tires or chains until 5 miles east of Kyburz where it is chains or 4WD with snow tires to Meyers.

Chains or snow tires around the lake including Spooner Summit and Kingsbury Grade.

I80 is chains or 4WD with snow tires from Nyack to Truckee. Trucks are being screened at Applegate and Nevada State Line for maximum chains in possession and permit loads are prohibited.

With storm headed to Lake Tahoe, Caltrans offers tools to help be prepared

With a forecast for the Sierra of a significant snowfall over both Donner Summit and Echo Summit, Caltrans issued a statement for motorists to take caution and to alert drivers of tools at their disposal to help them on their trip.

High winds are predicted with heavy snow, creating the potential for white-outs and even blizzard conditions on summit passes between Wednesday night and Friday morning.

There is no road work scheduled for the South Shore this week. Here are the current projects around the lake:

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Brace Road to Magra Road: Work continues on a $36 million project to increase the vertical clearance of nine bridge structures in south Placer County to 16 feet, 6 inches. The vertical clearance will be increased on seven structures by lifting the existing bridge deck and the other two will have the roadway below dug down. Christmas tree permits for Lake Tahoe Basin go on sale Monday

The popular Lake Tahoe basin Christmas tree permits from the U.S Forest Service go on sale Monday, November 16 on both the South Shore and November 18 on the North Shore.

Permits cost $10 each with a limit of two per family. They must be purchased in person, are not transferable and are sold on a first come, first serve basis. Even though USFS lists noon on December 24 as the last day for sales, they are normally sold out well before that date. In 2014, tree permits sold out on December 4. The last day to cut a tree down is Christmas Day, December 25, 2015.

Pope-Baldwin bike path may see closures and delays

Part of the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path will be rerouted near Camp Richardson to give riders a better, safer experience.

In order to implement this change, the U.S Forest Service will have to close portions of the trail over the next few weeks. They do not expect the closures to last more than half of a day, and alternate routes will be offered when possible.

This path links the U.S. Forest Service recreation facilities from Pope Beach to Baldwin Beach along Highway 89.

Kingsbury Grade project wins TRPA "Best in Basin" Award

A Nevada Department of Transportation project to repave and enhance Kingsbury Grade last year has received a Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Best in the Basin Award.

The project substantially completed ahead of schedule in 2014, and was recognized as a water quality and erosion control improvement that helped enhance the Lake Tahoe environment.

1,800 cyclists to bike around the lake in Sunday's Tour de Tahoe

The 13th annual Tour de Tahoe bicycle ride around the lake is on Sunday, September 13. More than 1,800 riders are expected to take on the 4,000 feet of climbing involved in the ride which continues to gain in popularity. Besides recreational riders there will also be teams riding to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Easier and cheaper process looked at in South Lake Tahoe City Codes

What once took hours of City of South Lake Tahoe staff time as well as weeks for applicants to get answers may soon be a one hour process.

Since it was organized in 2014, the City Attorney has been working with departments to update each section of the City Code. For portions that pertains to zoning, land use, development standards and building standards, City staff looked at ways to streamline the process and remove permit process portions of the code where possible.

Lane reductions at Cave Rock beginning Wednesday

In order to prepare for a 2016 project that will extend the westbound Cave Rock tunnel entrance, drivers using Highway 50 through the tunnel will experience traffic delays starting Wednesday, September 9, 2015.

Both directions of traffic will be alternated through the eastbound Cave Rock tunnel and travel delays of up to 30 minutes between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. can be expected for the next four to five weeks, Monday-Friday.

Black Bart Avenue and surrounding streets to close for surfacing project

El Dorado County's Transportation Division has announced upcoming partial and full road closures for Black Bart Avenue, Barbara Avenue and Martin Avenue in order to complete an overlay project starting September 21, 2015.

Black Bart and Martin Avenues are scheduled for directional closures September 21, 22 and 24 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. During these directional closures, motorists will only be allowed to drive in the direction from Pioneer Trail to U.S. 50.

Deputy Carl Howell's funeral procession from Carson City to Reno Thursday

Large numbers of law enforcement and community members are expected to join the family of slain Carson City Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell as his funeral procession leaves Carson City on August 20 at 9:00 a.m.

The procession will being at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and end at the Reno Events Center on the corner of east 4th and N. Center Streets in downtown Reno.

South Lake Tahoe Building Permit Center extends hours

In order to improve customer service, the South Lake Tahoe Permit Center expanded their hours of operations.

Beginning today, August 17, the center will be open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with no closures during the day.

The City recognized the need to provide quality customer service to the development community. The new hours of operation will help assist individuals and businesses who want to invest in the community, improve their buildings, and build new projects by providing more opportunities for permit processing needs.

Forests grapple with 8,500 gun incidents

Perched around a secluded campfire in the Rocky Mountains, Glenn Martin jerked forward, said, "Ow," and died. The wayward bullet that struck him in the national forest has campers and other users calling for changes in recreational shooting policy.

Martin, 60, died July 3 in the Pike & San Isabel National Forest, 30 miles southwest of Denver. The 3.1-million-acre forest holds the record for the most gun-related violations reported in the country, a review of federal records by the USA TODAY Media Network shows.

Overnight roadwork to affect travelers on U.S. 395 south of Carson City

The Nevada Department of Transportation will begin overnight work to apply a top sealant coating to U.S. 395 between south Carson City and Gardnerville.
