National Night Out celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

National Night Out is held across the country on the first Tuesday of August and is a time for the public to come together to learn how to be safer as a community. This year in South Lake Tahoe it was held at Bijou Elementary and had multiple agencies interacting with youth and adults with hands-on exhibits and activities.

El Dorado County probation staff shown appreciation during week-long celebration

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Not all employees feel appreciated by their bosses but that wasn't the case during a week set aside to honor probation employees around the country.

El Dorado County Chief Probation Officer Brian Richart honored staff with five special days during the week, all centered around popular food items.

Driver escapes after high speed pursuit from South Lake Tahoe to Zephyr Cove

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A driver and his passenger escaped after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase from the Heavenly Village area of South Lake Tahoe to Zephyr Cove, Nevada. They crashed their car into a guard rail and ran away.

On Sunday, August 4 an officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) attempted to make a traffic stop at 2:06 a.m. when the driver failed to yield and took off. A pursuit ensued into Douglas County, at times reaching high rates of speed. Six minutes later the suspect's car crashed into a guard rail on Highway 50 in Zephyr Cove.

Drivers and beach goers share the highway in Lake Tahoe; More safety improvements ahead

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - It's summertime, a beautiful time of year that brings with it perfect beach weather, something evident by the hundreds of cars parked along the roads around Lake Tahoe on a daily basis.

Two of those areas that bring the most vehicles full of beachgoers are Zephyr Cove and Round Hill Pines, two very popular Lake Tahoe spots. Drivers along the highway don't always slow down to speeds slower than the posted 45 mph, keeping it a dangerous stretch on busy beach days with car doors opening and people walking on the road with their coolers and beach gear.

Small late night fire in Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An observant Harrah's Tahoe hotel guest helped firefighters attack a South Lake Tahoe fire late Thursday night, allowing them to catch it early and keep it small.

At 11:45 p.m., South Lake Tahoe emergency dispatch received a call about a fire in the area of the gondola. A guest on the hotel's 19th floor had seen fire and called it in.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) went to the hotel to get the height advantage and better pinpoint where the fire had been seen while South Lake Tahoe Fire Department (SLTFD) headed to Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

Hazmat response to suspicious powder found in building behind Barton Hospital

5:25 p.m. Update: The El Dorado County HazMat Emergency Response team has confirmed that the powder substance found in a package delivered to Barton's supply chain this morning is not hazardous.

The sequestered employees have been released and the back entrance of the hospital is now accessible to the public.

"Barton is thankful for the local agencies who collaborated with us to ensure the safety of staff and patients," said Mindi Befu, Barton's Director of Marketing, Public Relations & Patient Experience.

National expert to speak at Anti-Human Trafficking Seminar in Douglas County

Overnight paving scheduled in Tahoe City

Caltrans is alerting motorists of scheduled maintenance work on State Highway 89 in Tahoe City starting Wednesday night.

Crews will be paving the highway from the Tahoe City Transit Center to the “wye” intersection with Highway 28. Work will take place under reversing one-way traffic control from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday and 7 p.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. Friday. Motorists should expect delays and “Be Work Zone Alert” when driving through the area.

Young teens causing problems at Stateline arrested by South Lake Tahoe Police

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past few weeks, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) have been dealing with reports of a group of juveniles who have been causing problems in the Heavenly Village and Raley's area near Stateline.

Kudos: Community supports growing tennis program

A record 246 people participated in the 36th Tahoe Tennis Classic at Zephyr Cove Park this past weekend. The four-day annual event brought people from throughout the United States to our area for competitive and fun tennis.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has a contract with Douglas County to operate the six courts. Responsibilities include resurfacing the courts, managing play, and providing instruction for all ages and abilities.

Two arrested after suspected bomb closes SR89 at Emerald Bay and Raleys in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A lead from the Las Vegas FBI led law enforcement to South Lake Tahoe to confront what they thought to be a woman intent on harming herself and perhaps others with a bomb.

Small South Lake Tahoe fire spotted from Nevada Beach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A person sitting on Nevada Beach Thursday morning saw a stream of smoke coming from the California side of the lake and called the fire department just before 10:00 a.m. The caller thought there was fire along the beach in South Lake Tahoe so a search began for the source. Other calls went into dispatch and the fire turned out to be on a strip of land near Spruce Avenue between Peninsula and Heather Lake Roads.

The fire was put out within five minutes of the arrival of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR). An area of 20' x 20' was burned.

Invasive mussels found during Lake Tahoe boat inspections

Mandatory inspections of all boats launching in Lake Tahoe and other Sierra lakes has resulted in the interception of invasive quagga mussels on two boats.

The detection of the infestations of aquatic invasive species took place at the California inspection stations in Meyers and Truckee.

Kids on Lime scooters take over lane of Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe; One struck by car

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 13-year-old boy on a Lime Scooter was hit by a car Tuesday night as he was riding it in the fast lane on Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe.

According to South Lake Tahoe Police Department Sgt. Nick Carlquist, a group of about one-half dozen kids on scooters were heading west on the highway in the #2 lane, or better known as the slow lane of the road. They completely took the lane over said Carlquist, forcing drivers into the other lanes and causing a traffic hazard.

Sales tax revenues increase in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The winter of 2019 was a good one for both South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County retailers, ski resorts, restaurants and others whose businesses collect sales tax, including online retailers selling goods in the area.

The first sales tax report for 2019 has been released, with $2,580,475 in gross receipts in South Lake Tahoe during Q4/Q1 and $11,976,387 in the unincorporated areas of El Dorado County. During the same two-quarter period the year before, tax revenues were $2,390,631 and $9,925,645 respectively.

South Lake Tahoe man indicted on federal firearms and narcotics charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe man who led multiple law enforcement agencies on a high-speed pursuit in El Dorado County and Sacramento in May was indicted by a federal grand jury today on two counts.

National Night Out in South Lake Tahoe August 6

South Lake Tahoe Police: 18-year-old arrested after allegedly striking cyclist with car, fleeing scene

7:30 p.m. update: An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of Felony Hit and Run Causing Injury. Rafael Aliberth Corte-Zulloa is currently in the El Dorado County Jail on a $10,000 bail hold.

The car SLTPD had been looking for was found in the 800 block of Los Angeles Avenue in South Lake Tahoe less than an hour after the crash, leading to the arrest of Corte-Zulloa.

Single lane closures start on Kingsbury Grade Tuesday

Single lane closures will take place on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) July 17-31 as the Nevada Department of Transportation clears roadside slopes.

Small sections of Kingsbury Grade will be reduced to one lane from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays July 17-31 between Daggett Summit and State Route 206 (Foothill Road). Motorists are advised to anticipate minor travel delays as traffic flaggers and pilot cars alternate directions of travel through localized road work zones. The road work schedule is subject to change.

Car left running, empty and on its side after driver crashes into South Lake Tahoe home

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Emergency personnel were called out to a home on Springwood Drive in South Lake Tahoe early Monday morning after a vehicle crashed into it, severing the gas meter.

Upon arrival just before 3:00 a.m. July 15, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) found a car still running and on its side after it hit the unoccupied home. The driver was nowhere to be found.

Small fire overnight in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The cause of a small fire on Al Tahoe Boulevard is still under investigation by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue.

At 1:42 a.m. Friday, firefighters were dispatched to a vegetation fire near the entrance to the Community Play Fields. South Lake Tahoe Police Department units arrived on scene first and were able to extinguish the bulk of the fire prior to the arrival of firefighters. The fire was kept to a 10’ x 20’ spot.

The fire is suspicious and at this time the cause is still under investigation.

South Lake Tahoe fire displaces residents of three apartments

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One apartment is a total loss and two others suffered major damage after a Thursday afternoon fire on Terry Lane in South Lake Tahoe.

At 12:07 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a fully engulfed fire in the 3600 block of Terry Lane. Upon arrival, firefighters found a six-unit apartment building with one of the upstairs units on fire.

The occupants of all six units escaped the fire with no injuries after being evacuated by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

Chamber TREK to Downtown Carson City to see their main street transformation

The community is invited to join the Tahoe Chamber in their visit to Carson City on July 16 from noon to 5:00 p.m. to explore how Carson City leaders and community members successfully transformed and revitalized their downtown main street.

The developing Main Street Management Plan for South Lake Tahoe parallels much of what Carson City did, and those going on the trek will have the chance to learn about the history of Nevada project and how the current business climate of the area has improved since the highway realignment.

Identity of man found deceased on South Lake Tahoe golf course released

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.- The identity of the man found deceased on the 4th of July at the Bijou Municipal Golf Course has been released by the El Dorado County Sheriff Coroner. 55-year-old Dean Kohler of South Lake Tahoe was found near the entrance to the golf course which is located on Fairway Avenue.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department said the deceased was not wearing clothing but no foul play is suspected. The case is still under investigation and cause of death is not known.

South Lake Tahoe police officer involved in two-car collision

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A collision in the intersection of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Lodi Avenue in South Lake Tahoe Saturday evening sent one police officer to the hospital.

Just before 8:00 p.m. on July 6, emergency dispatch received a call from that officer to alert them he had just been in a collision.

Since the incident involves one of their officers, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has turned the investigation over to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Body of man found near South Lake Tahoe golf course

3:10 PM update: The South Lake Tahoe Police Department says the body found today at Bijou Municipal Golf Course is that of a 55-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident. No foul play is suspected.

The name of the deceased person will not be released until next of kin has been notified. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.

$8.8M headed to LTCC in matching funds for classroom modernization

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A promise made to the community when they voted to pass Measure F in 2014 is coming to fruition after Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) was notified they are receiving $8.8M in matching funds for the modernization of their campus. This sets the stage for $17.6 million to be spent on modernization and upgrades to LTCC’s main building.

Special LTUSD meeting to discuss Sierra House Elementary

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m.to discuss approval of funds needed to get Sierra House Elementary opened by the beginning of the school year.

Since a Labor Day 2018 fire, the school which housed grades K-5 has been closed with students split between South Tahoe Middle School and Al Tahoe Elementary.

There have been concerns in the community the school wouldn't be ready to open in August.

Alpine County responds to report of unhealthy drinking water

To start off the holiday, the City of South Lake Tahoe is organizing the annual 4th of July parade down Highway 50 from Ski Run Boulevard to Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard starting at 10:00 a.m.

Tahoe Township hotels and VHRs now have new $5/night surcharge

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - A new $5 per night surcharge will be added to all hotel rooms and other transient lodging accommodations within the Lake Tahoe Township area of Douglas County.

As a result of Senate Bill 461, the new law adding the fee went into effect July 1, 2019, giving the new charge to Tahoe-Douglas Visitor’s Authority (TDVA) for a planned event center in Stateline. It affects all bookings received by the lodging properties after July 1.

South Lake Tahoe jury finds local man guilty of attempted murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ariel Mendoza Arce was found guilty of attempted murder by a South Lake Tahoe jury on June 26, 2019.

On August 13, 2018 at 2:40 a.m., four nurses from Reno staying in a hotel in the Heavenly Village area heard a woman screaming for help. When the nurses went to investigate the screams they witnessed Arce viciously attacking a woman by punching her, kicking her, and stomping on her head.

One arrested after high speed pursuit of shooting suspect in Douglas County

Multiple agencies were involved in the pursuit of a shooting suspect from Reno through Douglas County Monday afternoon.

The driver of a silver Challenger led the Nevada Highway Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO), Reno Police Department and the Carson City Sheriff's Office on the pursuit that reached speeds of 120 mph, according to DCSO.

Florida man arrested in Meyers on charges stemming from alleged stalking and criminal threats

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - An Ormond Beach, Florida man is sitting in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe on charges of stalking, carrying a concealed weapon and vandalism.

On June 24, detectives from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) began an around-the-clock investigation of an interstate stalking and criminal threats case. The case involved credible and serious threats against the victim’s life according to EDSO.

The three-mile long Tahoe East Shore Trail opens to bikes and pedestrians

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Tahoe East Shore Trail at Lake Tahoe is now open to non-motorized bicycle and foot traffic. The Nevada Department of Transportation and Tahoe Transportation District, along with their partners in the project, celebrated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday afternoon the three-mile path between southern Incline Village and Sand Harbor State Park.

Police ask for public's help after bullets found in South Lake Tahoe homes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At around 3:00 a.m. Thursday, June 27 a South Lake Tahoe woman woke up to a loud noise and found debris on her face. She didn't think much of it and went back to sleep. Upon awakening in the morning she found what she thought was a bullet hole in her bedroom window.

She called the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) who arrived at the home on Fresno Avenue in the Al Tahoe neighborhood. They found three bullet holes in the house and a fourth that entered a neighboring home on Tallac Avenue.

Police also found four handgun shell casings at the scene.

Lake Tahoe Community College investigates alleged gun threat made by student

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officials with Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and South Lake Tahoe Police Department are investigating an alleged gun threat made by a student on campus June 13.

The head of campus security is conducting an internal investigation and the police and other security personnel are also involved with their own investigations. They have interviewed the unidentified student who allegedly made the statement in front of another student while in a science class.

NDOT updates roadside parking restrictions around Sand Harbor

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Roadside parking restrictions will continue to be strictly enforced on State Route 28 south of Incline Village when the Tahoe East Shore Trail opens on June 28. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has also added some new no parking areas in southern Incline Village.

NDOT to prohibit parking on roadway at Cave Rock

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Roadside parking restrictions on US50 south of the Cave Rock tunnel will soon be enhanced by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).

Even though vehicles and trailers have been parking in the median just outside the entrance to the Cave Rock State Park, it is illegal to do so. NDOT will be adding signage to the area to alert those who are parking illegally.
