Golden Bear neighborhood is first South Lake Tahoe National Firewise USA® Designation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Golden Bear community in South Lake Tahoe has been at the forefront of neighborhood fire safety and their hard work has paid off. They have earned a Firewise USA® designation by the National Fire Protection Association, making them the first South Lake Tahoe community to earn this designation.

Golden Bear neighborhood to hold emergency evacuation drill

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services, Lake Valley Fire Protection District, CAL Fire, and the US Forest Service will be hosting a community evacuation drill for the Golden Bear Residential Tract on Saturday, May 18. The drill will take place from 8:00 a.m. to about 12:00 p.m.

Evacuation planning session for Golden Bear neighborhood

The Golden Bear neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe will be holding an evacuation planning meeting with the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) on Wednesday, November 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Station 6.

Residents in the area have created a spread sheet of every home, information on the residents, how many pets and other specific issues with each home. The approached LVFPD in helping them to prepare evacuation information since there is only one entrance/exit to their area off Pioneer Trail.

160 homes "evacuated" during South Lake Tahoe emergency drill

Though long awaited precipitation decided to fall in South Lake Tahoe Thursday, the Neighborhood Evacuation Drill still went ahead as planned.

"The drill went very well," said SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston. "Overall a success with lessons learned.

He said there was great interagency cooperation with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Search and Rescue, El Dorado County STAR and South Lake Tahoe Action teams, Public Works department, and the Red Cross all joining the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department in the drill.

Highland Woods neighborhood to be evacuated during drill

Thursday will start off with a reverse 911 call for 270 South Lake Tahoe residents living in the Highland Woods neighborhood.

The neighborhood evacuation drill will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to test the city's emergency system. All visiting or living in the Highland Woods area that wish to participate will be evacuated to the end of Sierra Blvd at the snow dump area. A public information officer will be there along with the Red Cross and informational booths and displays. Snacks will be provided.

Dozens of Skyland residents evacuated during fire drill

Every year, South Lake Tahoe fire agencies prepare to fight fires around the basin but they rarely get to practice evacuations of residents.

That opportunity came on Monday when the Tahoe Douglas Fire District and Skyland Fire Adapted Community executed an inter-agency wildfire evacuation drill in the Skyland neighborhood.

The drill simulated a real evacuation event to give residents the opportunity to practice evacuating from their homes and getting to the designated safe zone.

Situations which could cause a neighborhood evacuation would be a wildfire, earthquake, hazardous spill or some other catastrophic event.

Evacuation Drill for Zephyr Knolls and Zephyr Heights on May 31

The Tahoe Douglas Fire District will hold an inter-agency wildfire evacuation drill on May 31 between the hours of 10am – 2pm.
The drill will be held in the Zephyr Heights and Zephyr Knolls communities. Residents of these communities will be notified by direct mail, door hangers and signage at the entrance areas to the communities.
Residents are encouraged to participate. The evacuation center for the drill will be the Zephyr Cove Park picnic area. Lunch will be served to those residents who evacuate to the park.
