23rd Annual Lake Tahoe Toy Run to Benefit Christmas Cheer

This event, spearheaded by a group of local motorcycle enthusiasts, is one of the largest fund raisers for Christmas Cheer in South Lake Tahoe. Christmas Cheer is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing food to needy family's year around, and Christmas toys to underprivileged children in our community. With record numbers of people in need in our community, we would appreciate any and all donations for prizes to be raffled at our Toy Run. With the holidays just around the corner, and when the need is the greatest, we plan to assist Christmas Cheer in their mission.

I have been working for the last year on The Children’s Memorial Tree and I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to the community of South Lake Tahoe for their support in rebuilding the memorial. I wanted to keep the Skibum as well as my alter ego out of the publicity due to the fact that there would be resistance to the idea from those that do not always agree with my views and I wanted no distractions. We had to play good cop / bad cop with the city in order to push the memorial through and guess which role I played.

South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts keeps Christmas Cheer doors open with $5k donation

Christmas Cheer, one of South Lake Tahoe’s local food banks, could not open its doors on some Sundays this fall from lack of available funds and contributions. The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) came to the rescue with a $5,000 donation that will significantly replenish the shelves at the food bank for the 400 households it serves.

Fundraiser for Julian

Julian, 5, is diagnosed with cerebral palsy and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy that is difficult to treat. He has many different types of seizures multiple times a day. The journey to control his seizures has been difficult and on-going. The fundraiser will help raise money for alternative medicine not covered by health insurance. The fundraiser is free, and includes music, food, beer, wine, balloon twisting, and face painting. There will also be a silent auction from 6 -8 p.m. with great prizes. Everyone in the community is invited and encouraged to attend.

2013 Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation Food Fest

Success at 4th Annual Sample the Sierra

Despite smoky skies, South Lake Tahoe was still a hot spot this Labor Day Weekend. The 4th Annual Sample the Sierra festival brought in masses of people to taste the unique flavors of the Sierra Nevada. The kickoff Winemakers Dinner at Bumgarner Winery spoiled attendees with a five course meal prepared in the wood fired oven with each course appropriately paired with one of Bumgarner’s fine wines. Saturday’s Sip & Shop at Après Wine Company drew more than 20 people to taste C.G. Di Arie wines and gourmet cheeses.

Outdoors with Don Q: Sept. 7 is California's Free Fishing Day

The second Free Fishing Day in 2013 in California will be Saturday, Sept. 7. The first was way back on Saturday, July 6.

On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.

Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.

Lake of Sky Airshow Canceled Due to Smoke

The 25th Annual Lake of the Sky Airshow has been cancelled for this Saturday, August 24th due to the air quality conditions which have been impacted by the two large fires outside of the Lake Tahoe basin. Also canceled was Sunday's Young Eagles Flights.

Mother bear and cub set free in foothills above Kingsbury Grade

Two Sierra Nevada black bears, a mother and her cub, were released in the foothills in Douglas County near Kingsbury Grade Thursday night after being caught by Nevada Division of Wildlife officials earlier that morning.

Heavenly Mountain Run treks course along ski mountain

The second Heavenly Mountain Run on Sunday, Sept. 1, takes runners from the California Base Lodge at 6,565-feet, 5.8 miles, up Maggie’s to Hellwinkles and along the California Trail to the top of one of Lake Tahoe’s largest four-seasons resorts.

The run finishes at the Tamarack Lodge at an awe-inspiring 9,150-feet. Runners can enjoy a scenic ride down the Heavenly Gondola back to the base or descend on their own.

Finishers will be greeted by cheering fans and a post-race spread of food, drinks, and activities for all ages.

Happy Hour Ca$h Mob Generates Additional Revenue for Members

TahoeChamber’s “Ca$h Mob” series have been successful in their mission to support local businesses and keep money on the hill. Yesterday’s Happy Hour Mob was no exception.

More than 15 “mobbers” showed up for food and drink specials including a delicious smoked rib sampler platter at the Fox & Hound on Tramway Drive off Kingsbury Grade.

TahoeChamber would like to thank the Fox & Hound for hosting the mob, as well as the attendees at this event that that was created to help fulfill the chamber’s goal of creating a strong local economy.

El Dorado to step up enforcement on out-of-county roadside vendors

Capitalizing on residents’ need for strawberries for tonight’s dessert, or those last minute anniversary flowers, roadside vendors are seemingly everywhere. But, who is that guy on the corner?

“We are seeing an influx of vendors from outside of the county,” said El Dorado County Agriculture Commissioner Charlene Carveth. “In most instances, roadside dealers are not selling produce that is locally grown, or in compliance with basic local and state food safety requirements.”

Study finds poisons from illegal pot grows threaten wildlife in Sierra Nevada

Rat poison used on illegal marijuana grows is killing fishers in the southern Sierra Nevada, according to a recent study conducted by a team of scientists from the University of California, Davis, the U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Southwest Research Station, UC Berkeley, and the Integral Ecology Research Center in Humboldt County, Calif.
