Record high temperatures expected at Lake Tahoe this weekend
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 04/21/2012 - 5:38amA strong high pressure over the region will bring above normal temperatures to the Lake Tahoe Basin, eastern Sierra and Western Nevada through the middle of the week, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
High temperatures today through Monday could approach 20 degrees above normal for late April. Nighttime low temperatures could be 10 to 15 degrees above normal. High temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday should be around 10 degrees aboe normal before near-normal readings return late in the week.

Lake Tahoe Weather: Warm through Monday, snow Tuesday

A strong cold front will move quickly across the region Tuesday, dropping temperatures up to 25 degrees compared to Monday. Winds will increase late Monday and Tuesday with gusts 40-55 mph in lower elevations, and ridge gusts in the Sierra exceeding 100 mph.

Gusty winds to 30 mph are expected for valleys ahead of the front, with a quick burst of snow Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Sierra snowpack well below normal even after January boost

The graph above shows the Snow Water Equivalent from the current water year through Feb. 1, the average water year (1971-2000), and the 2010-2011 water year.
The Snow Water Equivalent for this water year through Feb. 1 is around 5 inches, compared to more than 20 inches this time last year, according to the weather service.

Winter storm arrives at Lake Tahoe

A strong Pacific storm that has prompted a winter storm warning through 10 a.m. Saturday will affect the region tonight bringing heavy snow and gusty winds to the Sierra. The heaviest snowfall is expected to remain above 7,000 feet in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Snow will increase later tonight as the cold system moves through dropping between 2 to 4 inches an hour.

Washoe Drive Fire burns 26 homes, 3,900 acres, Highway 395 between Carson City and Reno still closed
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 1:57pmOfficials reported this morning that the Washoe Drive Fire destroyed 26 homes, and has currently consumed 3,900 acres.
At a 9 a.m. press conference, officials reported the blaze is 50 percent contained, and that 700 firefighters are working to extinguish hot spots in advance of the high wind that are forecast for this afternoon.
There were 20 homes reported lost last night, but in the light of day, personnel working the fire were able to get a better count of the structures that burned.
NHP: Highway 395 closed Friday from SR 431 Mount Rose to Carson City

Motorists should find alternative routes to Carson City as agencies continue to work on the fire.
Tahoe License Plate for Powder Program To Benefit from Snow Forecast

Drivers who purchase a California or Nevada Tahoe vehicle license plate will receive two free ski lift or Nordic tickets to the resort of their choice. New Tahoe plates cost $50 in California and $61 in Nevada.

In the photo illustration above, the first three images show the jet stream and large scale (synoptic) pattern changes forecast to take place over the Eastern Pacific Ocean next week. The persistent high pressure ridge that had kept most of the West Coast abnormally dry this winter is forecast to amplify and retrograde allowing the Sub-Tropical Jetstream to bring strong winter storms back to the Sierra. The fourth image shows a significant amount of moisture that should prompt the storms at the end of next week.
