New art gallery opening in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe has a new gallery, the Benko Art Gallery, and they'll be celebrating their grand opening on Sunday, April 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with a celebration that will include beverages, hors d’oeuvres and live music.

Preger to Speak About Photographing Burning Man April 5

Multi-media artist brings exhibit to Lake Tahoe Community College

Multimedia artist Cynthia Hooper, whose videos and paintings capture various landscapes found in California and Mexico, is bringing her artistic talents to Lake Tahoe Community College’s Haldan Gallery this winter. Research & Desire: Recent Videos and Paintings by Cynthia Hooper opens Thursday, Jan. 14, with an Artist’s Reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Haldan Gallery. Hooper will give a short talk about her work at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and all are welcome to attend this free event. The exhibit remains open until March 18.

Lake Tahoe celebrity golfers to play in Diamond Resorts Tournament in Florida

Unique Lake Tahoe exhibit opens at Nevada Museum Of Art In Reno

The first major historical art survey of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra’s infamous Donner Pass takes an ambitious trip through two centuries, highlighting the roles of Native Americans and railroad barons and the tourists and scientists trying to halt the loss of clarity in the azure waters.

“Tahoe: A Visual History” opened Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art, featuring more than 400 objects by 175 painters, photographers, architects, basket weavers and sculptors. Arranged chronologically for the most part, it combines culturally and historically significant creations with contemporary works.

Forests grapple with 8,500 gun incidents

Perched around a secluded campfire in the Rocky Mountains, Glenn Martin jerked forward, said, "Ow," and died. The wayward bullet that struck him in the national forest has campers and other users calling for changes in recreational shooting policy.

Martin, 60, died July 3 in the Pike & San Isabel National Forest, 30 miles southwest of Denver. The 3.1-million-acre forest holds the record for the most gun-related violations reported in the country, a review of federal records by the USA TODAY Media Network shows.

Justin Timberlake makes the most of his inaugural ACC appearance

While his score may not have won the American Century Golf Championship, Justin Timberlake won the hearts of many fans at Edgewood Tahoe this week. The large gallery following him during the practice rounds and tournament was full of girls, teens and moms trying to catch a glimpse of the recording artist.

During Sunday's final round, Timberlake was partnered with NFL great Jerry Rice and Alfonso Ribeiro who is best known for winning Dancing With the Stars and for his role on Fresh Prince on Bel-Air.

LTCC holds Annual Student Art Exhibition

Students from the art department at Lake Tahoe Community College will be displaying their creations at the annual Student Art Exhibition held throughout the campus from May 17 through June 19.

To kick off the show there will be an opening reception on Sunday, May 17 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with music, refreshments, and a 3:30 p.m. awards ceremony. It is free to attend and open to the public.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation and Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe are teaming up once again for the fourth annual “Off the Wall” Art Auction at LTCC. Participants can enjoy works of art created by locally and regionally known artists, bid on their favorites, and support local education and charitable organizations, all at the same time.

The artwork up for auction is being donated by a number of local artists, including nationally known artist and LTCC Art Department Chair Phyllis Shafer, David Russo, and many other Art Department faculty members.

SLT Police asking public for help in recent identity theft case

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding more about the local activities of two men suspected of burglary, identity theft and other charges.

As reported in SouthTahoeNow, Chad Galvan and Marcus Gamez were arrested on February 25 on multiple charges stemming from their obtaining art at a local gallery with stolen identities.

Stolen art ring broken up in South Lake Tahoe; Two arrested

Two men arrested in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday are facing several charges including forgery, conspiracy to commit a crime, 1st and 2nd degree burglary and impersonation to make others liable.

Chad Anthony Galvan, 33, and Marcus Daniel Gamez, 35, were arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department after four expensive works of art were purchased from Marcus Ashley Galleries using stolen identities.

On Thursday, January 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., enjoy gorgeous printmaking by artist Emmy Lingscheit in her show Departure, housed in the Haldan Art Gallery in the library building. In the Foyer Gallery in the Fine Arts building, explore recent paintings by artist Kelley Hackleman in her show, Slightly Disheveled. Despite the power outages and high winds in the South Shore, the Marriott Grand Residence Club was warm and cozy (with power!) on Thursday night, which made it the perfect first stop for TahoeChamber’s annual Winter Wine Walk Business After Hours Mixer (BAHM!). Nearly 100 guests began their tours at the Marriott Grand Residence Club with a taste from Crystal Basin Cellars before embarking on a tour to participating businesses. Each shop welcomed attendees with food, drinks and raffle prizes. It was a fun, blustery night that included great food, wine and friends.

New on the South Shore: Posh Finds

Posh Finds has been opened in South Lake Tahoe since November 4, and owner Krystal Garcia is excited about what's to come. The store features lightly used clothing and accessories along with some new items she's been able to find at deep discounts.

"I like nice things but hate to pay retail," said Garcia. Her new shop has a large selection of designer jeans, shoes, tops, jewelry, dresses and little bit of everything.

She moved to South Lake Tahoe over five years ago and has been a stay at home mom. The store, she says, is a long time coming and will fill a void in the area.

Bringing Art To Schools in South Lake Tahoe

In keeping with its mission to bring more arts to more people, El Dorado Arts Council is thrilled to announce its new partnership with BATS, Bringing Art to Schools, an art appreciation and art history program for South Lake Tahoe students in kindergarten through fifth grade. BATS students both learn about classic works of art—their meanings, styles, and the movements that informed them—and create their own art based upon a selected theme.

Blue Ribbon Award Nominees Announced by TahoeChamber

The nomination period for the 2014 Blue Ribbon Awards ended on Friday, October 10 at noon. TahoeChamber’s prestigious awards program that recognizes exceptional South Shore businesses received over 175 nominations for eight separate award categories. Agencies and public work together to keep Lake Tahoe beaches clean

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority would like to thank all of our community members, visitors, businesses and agencies who have helped keep our Lake Tahoe beaches clean throughout a busy summer season. Debris on Lake Tahoe’s beaches affects everyone’s enjoyment of the lake, and trash and debris on the beaches and streets can easily find its way to the lake and adversely impact lake clarity, water quality and wildlife.

Over 1,200 people attend Sample the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe

With blue skies and warm temperatures, many people were out enjoying everything there is to do in South Lake Tahoe this holiday weekend. Many events from a carnival to fireworks were held, giving people plenty to choose from.

One of these events was the 5th Annual Sample the Sierra Farm to Fork Festival. The main event was held at Bijou Community park on Sunday, with over 1,200 people enjoying food and drink from the region. There were 16 booths of local food, wine, beer and spirits as well as an artisan marketplace, live music and a cooking contest with a mystery box of ingredients.

Water issue expert to speak in Lake Tahoe

The Sierra Business Council is hosting Peak Innovation, a conference for Lake Tahoe locals, small business owners, communities and local governments. During the conference, Dr. Peter Gleick, an expert in water issues especially in the context of economic and environmental justice, will be at the conference which takes place October 8-10 in Tahoe City. In a National Geographic science blog, Gleick recently repeated the common question, “Why, if the California drought is so bad, has the response been so tepid?”

Studio Tour features 50 artists celebrating 50 years of the Tahoe Art League

Once a year, local artists open their studios for the Tahoe Art League Studio Tour. This free event gives the public the opportunity to view and purchase art as well as visits with the talented participants.

For two weekends the tour is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Here is an easy to use map or they can be picked up at the Art League's gallery located at 3062 Lake Tahoe Blvd adjacent to the Lake Tahoe Historical Museum, Senior Center and Visitor's Center.

Iraq War Veteran Chad Pfeifer leads American Century Golf

Retired United States Army Corporal Chad Pfeifer, an Iraqi War Veteran and amputee whose golf-centered rehabilitation has turned him into a top-tier tournament player leads the pack of celebrity golfers after day one of the 25th Annual American Century Championship.

"Didn't remember much," Pfeifer said after play Friday. "There was a lot of nerves, that's for sure. Just tried to play my own game and just tried to play steady golf."

Dr. Seuss Hats Off Exhibition Comes to Lake Tahoe

Few authors are better known than Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, yet, to this day, his Secret Art and his fantastical Hat Collection are virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Ted Geisel created paintings and collected hats which he secreted away in a hidden closet at the Dr. Seuss Estate. This is the first time ever that Dr. Seuss’s hats have ever traveled outside his home.

Kingsbury Grade Closing to Through Traffic in May, September and October

A year and a half road construction project will result in the closure of Kingsbury Grade for almost 75 days this year and more in 2015. Since this will have an impact on local businesses, residents and commuters, a forum was held on Wednesday in order to inform the community about the impact.

A full house was on hand in the TahoeChamber conference room to listen to representatives from Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and the road construction company.

LTCC Announcing 40th Anniversary Plans at March Press Conference

The Lake Tahoe Community College District was voted into existence 40 years ago, on March 5, 1974. The College has big plans to celebrate its anniversary with a number of fun and educational events this year. Members of the media, the community, and college staff and faculty are all welcome to attend a press conference on Wednesday, March 5th at 11 a.m. to hear the College’s plans to mark its 40th year, and to honor its history. The conference will be held at the Econo Lodge at 2659 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, where the College first offered classes and welcomed its first students.

Lake Tahoe Regional Plan Update approved

For the first time since 1987, Lake Tahoe has a new regional plan for development and land use.
Twelve of the 14 voting members of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's governing board voted in favor of the new plan, with one member voting against it and another abstaining, according to TRPA spokesman Jeff Cowan.

Business interests say the plan is an overdue overhaul of regulations that will jump-start Tahoe's tourism economy while also protecting its environment.
