El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

Gardens 4 A Healthy Tahoe Awarded Champions For Healthy Kids Grant

Fresh produce is making its way to South Lake Tahoe thanks to the collaboration and volunteerism of community members working together as part of the group Gardens 4 A Healthy Tahoe. This group was recently founded by the Human Health and Social Wellbeing working group of the Lake Tahoe Sustainability Collaborative. In partnership, these two groups applied for the Champions for Healthy Kids Grant through the General Mills Foundation.

Vote Online to Help South Lake Tahoe Projects Receive Raley's Reach Grants

Our Community has the opportunity to benefit from a Raley's grant program that will give money to the 10 most popular projects in many regions of California (138 projects submitted in total) . Several of our community members have submitted proposals for projects that would benefit The Environment; Health; or Kids and at least 4 proposals have been made for projects at one of our schools or for the entire school district. (There are other Tahoe proposals as well.)

Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show This Weekend

The Third Annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will take place at the Recreation Center, 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd., in South Lake Tahoe, CA, this weekend. The popular event will be open 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Friday, April 25th,and from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 26, 2014. Admission is free to the public.

Hugelkultur Planned for South Lake Tahoe Community Garden

Hugelkultur (HOO-gul-culture) meaning hill culture or hill mound. It turns woodsy compost into the base of sustainable gardening with the use of very little water.

This word may not be in everyone's vocabulary (yet) but residents in South Lake Tahoe will soon be seeing this demonstrated if the community garden at Bijou Park is approved by the City Council.

Why I Farm Author to Speak at Library

Romano will speak from experience about today’s most vital issues: how to live with purpose and how to protect our food supply. He will also be taking questions about farming and gardening in the Sierra.

Green thumb workshop today at UC Davis Field Station

UC Davis Tahoe City Field Station Open House June 15

Nine beautiful West Shore gardens and educational talks on conservation landscaping topics highlight the fifth annual Conservation Landscape Tour, one of the signature events produced by the sustainable landscaping experts with the Tahoe Resource Conservation District. Maps for the tour can be picked up on Sunday, August 19 between 1 and 3 pm at the corner of Wilson and Pine Streets in Tahoma, Calif.

New Lake Tahoe Master Gardener Program Offered

Training for a Lake Tahoe Master Gardener program will begin this September in South Lake Tahoe.
The program is a partnership between the University of California Cooperative Extension Central Sierra and the Tahoe Resource Conservation District.
Participants who complete the 50-hour training course will be certified Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners who then can provide the community with research-based information about home horticulture and gardening.

Lake Tahoe Resource Conservation District Hires New District Manager

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District (Tahoe RCD) has hired a new District Manager, John Skeel, who officially takes over duties on July 19 at Tahoe RCD’s offices in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Skeel has 24 years of experience working with government organizations and not-for-profit agencies, focused primarily on community services, parks and recreation.

Volunteers from Scottsdale Assist Tahoe RCD with Evans Family Garden

Twenty-three teen and four chaperones from the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Phoenix volunteered Thursday at the Evans Family Garden and pitched-in with the Tahoe Resource Conservation District's (TRCD) efforts at the garden. As the five-year-anniversary of the Angora Fire just passed, it was a fitting volunteer effort from this out-of-town group.

Made in Tahoe: Local woman adds spice to life

From behind the island in a large stone and brick kitchen, Diane Weidinger goes about her business, carefully filling small tins with her spice blends to be shipped to customers near and far. Along with jars, tubs are stacked on a table at the end of the island. More jars crowd one end of the countertop. Weidinger is filling an order including blends of Egyptian, Scandinavian and Moroccan spices and more for a customer who wants to highlight workplace diversity.
