El Dorado County offers free home weatherization program

El Dorado County residents can save big on energy bills, and keep their homes cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, by taking advantage of free weatherization services available through the El Dorado County Community Services Weatherization Program. “The average yearly savings in energy bills after weatherization is over $400,” said Michelle Hunter, program manager with Community Services.
Tobacco Sales to Minors Drop in El Dorado County
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 07/22/2012 - 11:35amA recent survey conducted in El Dorado County showed that fewer merchants are willing to sell tobacco products to minors compared to just two years ago. Of the 100 tobacco retailers surveyed countywide, only 11 stores sold tobacco products to youth, resulting in a sales rate of 11 percent. In March of 2010, a similar survey resulted in a sales rate of 14.5 percent.
Affordable Care Act made many preventive services no cost to Nevada beneficiaries
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 07/10/2012 - 2:54pmIn Nevada, the Affordable Care Act — the new health care law — helped 101,333 people with original Medicare get at least one preventive service at no cost to them during the first six months of 2012, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced Tuesday. This is 43 percent of those eligible for these services in Nevada. This figure also includes 7,543 in Nevada who have taken advantage of the Annual Wellness Visit provided by the Affordable Care Act.
Nevada Taxable Sales Sees Modest But Solid Gain In April
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 06/29/2012 - 5:33pmCARSON CITY — Nevada’s taxable sales climbed by 5.1 percent in April over April 2011, continuing a 22 consecutive month trend of positive numbers for the important economic indicator, the state Department of Taxation reported this week.
The $3.5 billion in taxable purchases in April were buoyed by double-digit gains in several major categories, including construction; up 16.1 percent, merchant wholesalers-durable goods, up 10.2 percent; and motor vehicle and parts dealers, up 10.5 percent.
Face animal cruelty charges if you leave your pet inside a hot vehicle

According to Henry Brzezinski, Chief of Animal Services, if the outside temperature is 80 degrees or higher, temperatures inside vehicles can climb to 120 degrees or more within ten to twenty minutes, even with the windows opened two or three inches; heat stroke, irreparable brain damage and death can follow shortly thereafter.
