Road controls are still up on Lake Tahoe roads as the two day storm that dropped 45" of snow at Heavenly moves to the east. There is a chance of scattered snow showers in South Lake Tahoe with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 31. Winds will be from the southwest 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible. Tonight, isolated snow showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 8. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunny and 36 on Sunday!

Storm moves out of Lake Tahoe; Bigger one on the horizon

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The current Winter Weather Advisory expires at 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, but the next one will be in effect from 5:00 p.m. Thursday, March 15 to 5:00 a.m. Saturday.

From the storm Wednesday, Sierra-at-Tahoe is reporting 9"-13" of new snow in the last 24 hours, 16" at Kirkwood, 12" at Heavenly, 12" at Squaw Valley, 11" at Northstar and " at 10" at Mt. Rose.

Tahoe Search and Rescue locate two skiers at Heavenly

Two skiers who went out of bounds at Heavenly Mountain Resort Sunday were found safe and uninjured at approximately 6:50 p.m. March 4, 2018.

The pair were in waist deep snow and had trouble getting out according to El Dorado County Sheriff Sgt. Anthony Prencipe. They called for help and Tahoe Search and Rescue responded at about 5:30 p.m.

Prencipe said they two skiers, whose names and hometowns were not released, were uninjured and able to ski out on their own once help arrived.

Great snow, blue skies combined for busy Lake Tahoe weekend

No Vacancy signs at South Lake Tahoe lodging properties were prominent throughout South Lake Tahoe this past weekend after tourists headed to town after several feet of snow fell at local resorts

The crowds at Heavenly, Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe were evident as parking lots were full shortly after opening at each resort.

For a brief time at Kirkwood on Sunday, cars were attempting to park along State Route 88 to gain access to the resort as their lots were full, but the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was on the scene to keep that from happening according to Vail Resorts.

Lake Tahoe digging out

The trip to Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 and Interstate 80 Friday was not a pleasant experience for most drivers. Multiple accidents, road closures and heavy snow greeted them throughout the day and night. A winter storm warning is in effect for South Lake Tahoe until 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

It is a cold start to the morning Saturday with 13 degrees at 8:00 a.m. The forecast high for the day is 27. Expect snow showers after 5:00 p.m. with scattered snow showers during the day with an additional 1-3" possible, and another 1-3" possible overnight. Winds 5-10 mph.

Good decision making key to staying safe around Lake Tahoe

Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from Douglas County and El Dorado County save lives each year, and many times they have to respond to adverse conditions just as was the case when they were called out to Mott Canyon after two skiers were lost last week after skiing out of bounds at Heavenly.

SAR volunteers spend night with skier near Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Douglas County, El Dorado County and Washoe County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, paramedics and Blackhawk rescue helicopters all assisted in the location and retrieval of two skiers who went missing at Heavenly Mountain Resort Thursday evening.

Douglas County 911 operators received a call on February 22 at 5:00 p.m. from two male adults who said they were lost at the resort. They said they had some water, but were wet and cold, their cell phone batteries were diminished, and one of the skiers suffered from a medical condition.

Continued cold with chance of snow until weekend

Ski resorts are reporting several inches of snow from this past weekend's storm in Lake Tahoe, and more may be on the way.

Kirkwood is reporting 10 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, Heavenly - 3", Sierra-at-Tahoe - 7", Squaw/Alpine - 5", Northstar - 5", Mt. Rose - 7", and Diamond Peak - 2".

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno is reporting that after Monday, there is a chance of snow Wednesday through Saturday, and possibly into next week. A cold low pressure trough will remain over the Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada region with below normal temperatures.

USFS host six Russian delegates in South Lake Tahoe

Six delegates visiting the United States from Russia stopped by Lake Tahoe last week as part of the cultural exchanges programs, Friendship Force and Open World.

The delegates first stopped in Washington, D.C. before heading to the Reno/Lake Tahoe area.

If you caught the January 22, 2018 episode of The Bachelor that showed bachelor Arie Luyendyk, Jr. in many scenic spots around South Lake Tahoe you most likely saw the home the show's contestants, the bachelorettes, stayed in while in town.

Amgen Tour of California routes announced

The 2018 Amgen Tour of California has announced their race routes, giving cycling fans time to plot our their roadside viewing points.

The Women's Stage 2 and Men’s Stage 6 at South Lake Tahoe will both include iconic vistas, stunning lake views, highest summit in race history at Luther Pass, and the grueling Daggett Pass along Kingsbury Grade state Route 207 on May 18.

Proposed improvements at Heavenly released

The U.S. Forest Service has released their draft decision for proposed improvements to existing skiing and snowboarding terrain at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Much of the work will be done on runs outside of the Lake Tahoe Basin boundary.

Those proposed improvements would include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines to improve user experience, maintain user safety, increase energy and water efficiency, and maintain native species.

South Lake Tahoe property to be purchased as part of Bijou Creek Restoration Project

The City of South Lake Tahoe agreed Tuesday to accept funds from the California Tahoe Conservancy to purchase a home on Woodbine Road as part of the three-phased, 850-acre Bijou Park Creek Watershed Restoration Project.

USFS reminds motorists to stay on designated roads

Damage to natural resources was recently discovered in South Lake Tahoe after an unknown person, or persons, was found to have driven on a meadow near Heavenly Creek off Pioneer Trail.

USFS is reminding everyone that it is against the law to cause resource damage, punishable by a fine of $5,000 or more, and/or six month in jail. They are also reminding drivers that they must stay on designated roads only.

The Forest Service employees will continue to monitor areas throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin for compliance in order to protect all natural resources.

South Lake Tahoe businesses invited to be part of Spring Loaded

Businesses throughout the South Shore of Lake Tahoe are invited to participate in Spring Loaded, the annual series of events held in 2018 from March 17 to April 1.

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority along with its destination partners are launching Spring Loaded, a series of events that bring together the best of spring and winter with on-mountain activities at Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Mountain, and Sierra-at-Tahoe. It's all about the loud outfits. lodging specials, restaurant deals, happy hour offerings, mid-week entertainment and live music.

Walking with America Tour kick-off in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe resident Sheryl Lynn is walking across America starting on April 1, 2018, and she plans on finishing up the 3,605 mile route in six months.

To get her started, there will be a be a "Walk With Me" kickoff event on Saturday, February 17 starting at Lakeview Commons at the intersection of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Highway 50, and ending at Fire and Ice in the Heavenly Village. Everyone is invited, including friends of the four-legged variety.

Azul Latin Kitchen, located in the Heavenly Village, awarded a check for $6,000 to Tahoe Youth and Family Services during the board meeting on January 22.

Stanford professor at Tahoe: There is a way to stop global warming,

Keynote speaker and Stanford University professor of earth system science Dr. Noah Diffenbaugh presented his latest findings on the connections between the planet’s global warming and extreme weather events today at Operation Sierra Storm, a national weather conference held annual on the South Shore.

"It’s been an extreme year in California, and not only the rest of the U.S. but other parts of the world," said Diffenbaugh. "The warming we are seeing is not consistent with natural forcing alone.”

Tahoe Chamber event brings in $2,550 and food for Bread and Broth

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce's annual Connect for a Cause on January 18 had a great turnout from the community, bring in both cash and food donations for Bread and Broth.

Over 100 people attended the charity mixer at Riva Grill and they enjoyed appetizers and Riva Grill’s signature cocktail, Wet Woodies during the event.

Bread and Broth serves the community with weekly food giveaways and two hot meals a week, and their Bread and Broth 4 Kids programs gives over 170 South Lake Tahoe children in grades K-8 a backpack of weekend food.

"Ski With A Ranger" returns to Heavenly

The popular program from the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Ski with a Ranger, resumes at Heavenly Mountain Resort on Friday, January 26. Every Monday and Friday, the tours will start at 1:00 p.m. at Tamarack Lodge at the top of the gondola.

The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through April 6, 2018, weather permitting.

"Pray for Snow" dances worked as snow is covering the mountains around Lake Tahoe. Snow showers are tapering off this morning, but now before the weather system dropped 1-2" of snow at lake level and 7-11" at the ski resorts.

Man dies after altercation at Heavenly Village

A man whose actions lead to his being detained by security at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe on New Year's Eve has died.

The 46-year-old transient was acting erratic and causing a disturbance near the fountain on December 31, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Shannon Laney. Security detained the man and when police officers arrived they recognized he was in medical distress and immediately started life-saving measures.

Operation Sierra Storm returns to Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe ski resorts receive 3-10" of snow - "Feet" in the forecast

Snow fell at upper elevations Friday night, bringing 3-10" of much needed powder to Lake Tahoe ski resorts. Both Northstar and Heavenly reported 6", Sierra-at-Tahoe had 3", Squaw Alpine 4", Kirkwood 7" and Mt. Rose 10".

This is just a precursor to the next storm which is forecast to bring heavy snow the the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe Basin. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued, and, according to the National Weather Service in Reno, accumulations of 1-2 feet above 7,000 feet is expected with over two feet at the crest. Identity of man who died at Heavenly released

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The Santa Rosa, California man who died of blunt force trauma after going over a retaining wall and falling at Heavenly Mountain Resort on December 27, 2017 has been identified.

Lewis "Lucky" Carillo III, 49, died despite what many called "heroic" efforts to save his life by Heavenly ski patrol, Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue personnel.

Its been 20 years since Sonny Bono died skiing at Heavenly

Twenty years ago this week, Sonny Bono went missing.

He was a Palm Springs icon, born Salvatore Phillip Bono to a Sicilian peasant and a second-generation Italian-American whose marriage was arranged when his mother was 14. In Washington D.C., he was the Honorable Sonny Bono, Republican member of the House of Representative for California’s 44th District. But, to everyone else, he was Sonny.

Santa Rosa man dies while skiing at Heavenly Mountain Resort

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Heavenly Mountain Resort has confirmed a Santa Rosa, California man died while at the resort on Wednesday, December 27, 2017.

The unidentified 49-year-old man was on a beginner run near the Poma Trail.

“Heavenly Mountain Resort, Heavenly Ski Patrol, and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” said Mike Goar, vice president of mountain division and chief operating officer of Heavenly Mountain Resort.

More terrain opening at Lake Tahoe resorts

With no storms are on the horizon and snow-making operations ramped up, both Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar California have unwrapped more terrain for holiday skiers and riders, and they are joined by other area resorts with plenty to do for holiday visitors.

Stolen painting recovered in Sacramento

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Detectives from South Lake Tahoe Department (SLTPD) posing as potential buyers on Craigslist have uncovered a painting stolen from a gallery in the Heavenly Village.

On Saturday December 9, SLTPD received a report of a stolen painting from Pacific Crest Gallery. The painting, Three Bears Playing Golf, valued at $1195, was taken from the stores front sidewalk display by an unknown suspect.

Wind topples trees onto two South Lake Tahoe residences

Two homes in South Lake Tahoe were damaged Saturday evening after trees fell onto them as the area was under a high wind advisory. Both homes are located near Heavenly Mountain Resort.
