Kiwanis collecting suitcases and backpacks for South Lake Tahoe children

With almost 300 children in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District not having a permanent home, the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is holding a community event to help them with a big need: luggage and backpacks.

Soroptimists hand out donations to South Lake Tahoe non-profits

Members of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) handed out checks to 22 different project that are created by non-profits to serve the women and children of South Lake Tahoe on Thursday.

Matteucci is taking the students to Sutter's Fort for a living history experience as a culmination of their year long lessons on California history.

Easter Ham Bingo will take place on Saturday, March 19 at 5:00 p.m. at Grace Hall, located at St Theresa Church in South Lake Tahoe.

All entrants have a chance to win an Easter ham and other prizes.

Kiwanis offers free fingerprinting and identification program in South Lake Tahoe

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is holding a community Child Fingerprinting ID event at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe on February 16 and 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

Nationally, large numbers of children run away or are abducted each year. Local law enforcement officers have indicated that having a record of fingerprints can be helpful in an effort to safely return the children to their homes.

True to form, on January 11, Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra members Jan Lynds, Pat Frega and Bob “Snow Bum” Fleischer were there pitching in at B&B’s evening dinner. This year more than 500 students in grades K-12 throughout South Lake Tahoe received a brand new, warm winter coat of their very own though the efforts of the Kiwanis Community Organization, Inc. The project ensures that every child in our community who needs one receives a coat at no charge. The Kiwanis Community Organization, Inc., a 501 c3 non-profit, was established as a collaboration in our community for numerous service organizations to work together on projects such as Coats For Kids, that align with their common missions of supporting the youth and families of our community.

American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

Thirty South Lake Tahoe non-profits were given a share of $55,600 on Thursday, bringing the total the American Century Golf Championships have donated to the community this year to $107,100.

Purple Paw Project shows effects of domestic violence on pets

Join Live Violence Free and the Lake Tahoe Humane Society for "The Purple Paw Project" on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Bijou Park.

There is an effect of domestic violence on the family's pets, and this new project will use the free Saturday event to inform the public on what this is. Pets, as are children, are the innocent victims.

Join them at the Kiwanis gazebo at Bijou Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for food, music, a pet photo booth, raffle prizes and dog training.

Pet food donations will be accepted.

There is nothing quite like rich mahogany reflecting off the pure blue waters of Lake Tahoe, and there will be plenty of it to see as over 85 of the world's rarest wooden boats come to the Tahoe Keys Marina as part of the 8th Annual Wooden Boat Classic this weekend.

Each year, over 3,000 people walk through the boat slips, checking out the rare boats. There will be music, wine, food and vendors to enjoy as well. The Wooden Boat Classic brings together the fascinating and priceless history behind these elegant machines.

Beach Wrestling Championships this weekend in South Lake Tahoe

Beach wrestling has made it to South Lake Tahoe and everyone is invited to participate. Local wrestling coaches Ryan Wallace and Dave Borges are putting on a first for the area, the Inaugural Beach Wrestling Tournament will be held on the El Dorado Beach at Lakeview Commons on Saturday, July 25, 2015.

South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle and the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe are sponsoring the event which gets under way at high noon. Registration and weigh-ins begin at 11 a.m.

33rd Annual Kiwanis Mid-Winter Beach Party and Crab Feed

The middle of winter is always a perfect time to get your Hawaiian shirts and flip flop groove on. The Kiwanis Sunrisers Club will be holding their 33rd Annual Beach Party and Crab Feed on January 30 at 6 p.m. at Harrah's Tahoe.

There will be music and dancing to the sounds of "A Class Act" as well as a silent auction and lots of crab!

Tickets are $38 each and are available by calling 530-541-5900. More information is available on the club's facebook page as well. Tables can also be reserved.

Kudos: LTVA & South Tahoe Refuse thank the community

Recently the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, in conjunction with South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling, conducted a “drive and drop” at the LTVA’s California Visitors Center, and curbside collection on regular pick-up days. Once again we were overwhelmed by the generous response from our South Lake Tahoe community. Together we collected over 1,500 pounds of food and toys to benefit Christmas Cheer all Year, plus over $1,200 in cash, $1,000 of which was donated by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe students receive winter coats from local Kiwanis Clubs

Every year the three South Lake Kiwanis clubs get together for the Coats4kids program which ensures no elementary or middle school child goes through the winter without a coat to keep them warm.

Chaired by Gail Kolb and the Lake Tahoe Kiwanis Club, Coats4Kids is a joint project with Kiwanis of Tahoe Sierra, the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe and the Kiwanis Club of South Lake Tahoe Sunrisers.

Families in South Lake Tahoe receiving turkeys from Food Bank

The EL Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Friday to give away turkeys to families selected by local agencies.

In partnership with Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Rotarians, SLT Fire Department, Tahoe Sierra Kiwanis Club and the SLT Police Department, the Food Bank will give away 150 turkeys.

Families were signed up to receive the turkeys by St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth and the Family Resource Center of South Lake Tahoe. They will get the gift on Friday, November 21 at the American Legion.

The 7th Annual K9 Trials are being held in South Lake Tahoe all day Saturday. They started with Dog Patrol competition at Lakeview Commons this morning. More events will follow at the beach and the public is invited to attend.

BIG Day at the Kids' Fishing Derby at Lake Baron

"Big" describes the fish caught by the winners of the 13th Annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids' Fishing Derby last Sunday at Tahoe Paradise Park's Lake Baron. Records were broken, including biggest fish and number of trophy fish caught. The mark was set early, as Casey Holder landed a 4 lb 9 oz trout in the opening minutes of the Derby. At least 50 trout weighing in at over 2 pounds were pulled in by the participating children, many weighing over 3 pounds! It didn't take long for Chance Rice to bring in the day's ultimate winner, a 4 lb 10 oz beauty!

Agencies and public work together to keep Lake Tahoe beaches clean

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority would like to thank all of our community members, visitors, businesses and agencies who have helped keep our Lake Tahoe beaches clean throughout a busy summer season. Debris on Lake Tahoe’s beaches affects everyone’s enjoyment of the lake, and trash and debris on the beaches and streets can easily find its way to the lake and adversely impact lake clarity, water quality and wildlife.

Full day of South Lake Tahoe activities on tap for Sunday

Visitors and locals alike will find a variety of activities to enjoy in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, August 31.

The highlight of the day will be the Annual Labor Day Fireworks show. The show features a simultaneous music broadcast that can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL - AM 1490. Show begins at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks are visible from all over town.

Volunteer opportunities the community to help the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition

The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition is providing a free Bike Valet at the Kiwanis Community Fair in South Lake Tahoe at LTCC. They need volunteers to work 2-4 hour shifts on Saturday 8/30 and Sunday 8/31 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 .pm. This is a fun event and a great way to get involved with the Coalition.

The second volunteer opportunity is on September 7 which marks the 12th Annual TOUR DE TAHOE event produced by Bike The West. The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition hosts the final rest stop on Spooner Summit, providing snacks, water, and support.

Lake Tahoe's 8th Annual Stars of Tomorrow Looking for Local Talent

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe presents the 8th Annual STARS OF TOMORROW talent show. This is a wonderful opportunity for performing arts students in South Lake Tahoe grades 9th-12th to express themselves in public for their families, friends, and the community. Scholarship Awards will be given for First Place ($1,000), Second Place ($750), Third Place ($500), and Audience Favorite ($250).

American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

Twenty-eight area nonprofits were awarded $85,000 in donations from the 2013 American Century Championship. In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:

Halloween Dance with the Tahoe Dance Band - at the Senior Center on Friday, October 25. The 17 piece dance band will perform big band music, food, drink, costume prizes. 7:30 - 10 pm. $10.

Out and About in South Lake Tahoe

A beautiful day to be out and about in South Lake Tahoe! We stopped by Meeks to check out their Kids Day and found our friends from Kiwanis with their free Kids ID booth, Jen from KTHO broadcasting live and Ethan and Eli Cox enjoying the crafts while dad James was grabbing their hot dogs.

We also stopped by the newly remodeled Starbucks at the Y and checked out the beautiful new place. So much more space now! Same friendly crew ready to serve.

Treat Street 2013

The 11th Annual Treat Street will be held on Halloween night at South Lake Tahoe's Pine Cone Acre Motel. This year's event is sponsored by the Tahoe Area Coordinating Council for the Disabled (TACCD) and the Tahoe Sierra Kiwanis Aktion Club.

All trick or treaters are invited to this free evening of fun and games from 5 to 8 pm. There will be a haunted house, bounce house, mini golf, pie eating contest and other special events. There will also be free hot chocolate, candy and s'mores. There will also be hotdogs for sale for $1.

The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge 12TH Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby is being held this Sunday, September 22, at Tahoe Paradise’s Lake Baron. The Derby is FREE to all children under the age of 16. The lake is being stocked with thousands of trout just for this event.

Labor Day Weekend in Lake Tahoe full of Activities

The is a plethora of activities for visitors and residents alike to enjoy in South Lake Tahoe this weekend.

The Great Sternwheeler Race between the MS Dixie and Tahoe Queen on Saturday at 10 am. The boats will leave their respective piers and head for their opponent's. Action at Ski Run Marina, Zephyr Cove Resort and points in between.

Labor Day Festivities in South Lake Tahoe begin with Kiwanis Community Fair
