Prescribed burns slated to resume in Lake Tahoe

If conditions are favorable, operations may take place on Brockway Summit and near Glenbrook. Operations may continue for several days, weather permitting. Body of missing Sacramento woman found in Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of 62-year-old Pamela Suwinsky was found in the Upper Truckee River Sunday morning, about one-third mile north of Highway 50. Divers found her before noon but did not have positive identification until about 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Prescribed burning resumes around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service plan on continuing prescribed fire operations April 3, weather and conditions permitting.

Five car collision in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a five car collision Sunday, February 26 on Pioneer Trail near Woodbine Road at 9:00 a.m.

One car was stopped, attempting to make a turn onto Woodbine from Pioneer trail when an oncoming driver behind them hit their brakes, couldn't stop on the icy road and went over the guardrail.

As other drivers came upon the accident, they too crashed. The final car involved was looking at the car over the guardrail and didn't see the crash in front of her, swerved, hit the guardrail and slipped.

Lake Tahoe Basin Federal Advisory Committee meeting in South Lake Tahoe

After rain, heavy snow expected through Thursday in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe will be experiencing rain through Sunday, but forecasters say it will be replaced by snow later this evening.

The very dynamic and strong system passing over the Sierra also created some lightning and thunder overnight and on Sunday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno told South Tahoe Now that it is very common with a strong storm like this to see lightening.

New HR Director for Barton Health in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Barton Health has hired seasoned human resources leader Elizabeth Stork as their new Human Resources Director.

Highway 89 reopens after Emerald Fire burns 176 acres near South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Highway 89 reopened at noon on Monday, October 17 after being closed since Friday due to the Emerald Fire.

Fire and road crews have been working to complete containment of the fire as well as clearing debris and fallen trees after the weekend's fire and heavy rains.

Also, all evacuation orders have been lifted.

Traffic will be metered through the fire area by Caltrans. The Highway will be subject to future closure as repair work and tree removal continues and debris is removed from the highway.

High winds and wet storm brings snow to Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe residents saw some dusting of snow overnight Sunday and Monday morning. In the last 48 hours, the Lake Tahoe Airport saw wind gusts 40-52 mph.

Chain controls remain this morning on Highway 89 through Christmas Valley and over Luther Pass, as well as I80 from Kingvale to Donner Lake. Chains are required unless driving a 4WD with snow tires.

A wind advisory remains for Lake Tahoe until 11:00 a.m.

Today - Isolated showers before 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 49. West wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Temperatures to drop 15 degrees for the first day of Fall in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - The first day of Fall will be here on Thursday, but until then enjoy the last hurrah of Summer.

Winds will be increasing as another cold front pushes through the region early next week. Winds will begin to increase Monday becoming quite breezy by Tuesday and Wednesday.

LTVA to award over $50,000 in grants from Celebrity Golf funds to local non-profits

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) in partnership with NBC Sports and American Century Investments had over $110,000 to give out to South Lake Tahoe area groups, schools and non-profits after the end of the 2016 tournament.

They previously awarded $62,000 and is now looking for non-profits to get the remaining $51,984.

Applications from local nonprofits are now being accepted through Oct. 24 by LTVA for the grants.

Forest thinning resumes on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - To reduce fuels in the forest, as well as to promote forest health, the thinning of trees will resume between Fallen Leaf Lake and Camp Richardson Corral this week. Crews will also be working in the Spring Creek Homeowners Tract.

Whole tree and mechanical cut-to-length (CTL) tree removal will take place in these areas over the next several months, weather permitting and some areas will be closed for public safety as they do the cutting.

American Legion to host 9/11 ceremony in South Lake Tahoe

The 11:00 a.m. ceremony will be held at the Legion Hall located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Post members and the Ladies Auxiliary will also be providing refreshments after the ceremony.

Bears enjoy a dip in the pool in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe handyman, Alex Rosales, was hard at work Monday morning at a local homeowner's association when he spotted a mama bear and her two cubs enjoying a dip in the pool. Rosales, who owns HPR, Handyman/Property Management/Repair, has seen the family since they emerged from their winter abode under a home's deck in February.

The three bears have enjoying living among the people in the area, and have been peaceful neighbors all summer.

Small fires started this summer at transient camps around South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and other area fire departments have responded to several illegal cooking fires in homeless encampments this summer, some which have spread to burn up to several hundred feet.

The cause of the July 19 fires behind the power station by the Heavenly Gondola and in the Trout Creek area behind Ross are still under investigation, but sources have said they were both most likely started by illegal campfires. Fire crews also responded to transient camp fires on July 27 and August 8 as well as several illegal cooking fires.

New art gallery opening in South Lake Tahoe

TTD adds new buses and scheduling system in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe locals and visitors utilizing transit opportunities have seen some recent changes including new buses, lighting, signage and a new scheduling system for those with disabilities and over the age of 60.

The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) responded to input from the public and added the changes.

Warm Room opens doors in South Lake Tahoe

We've seen them walking along the streets, sleeping in the forests or hanging outside of an all night market. The faces of South Lake Tahoe's homeless. Winter can be brutal on the homeless in town with below freezing temperatures, snow covered paths and no place to keep warm.

That is, until today.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless opened the doors of their new Warm Room on Friday, ready to take in their first visitors at 7:00 p.m. It is a safe and warm place for people over 18, getting them out of physically harmful conditions.

American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

Thirty South Lake Tahoe non-profits were given a share of $55,600 on Thursday, bringing the total the American Century Golf Championships have donated to the community this year to $107,100.

Deadline approaching for Celebrity Golf donations

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority will be accepting applications from local nonprofits for distributions of $55,600 until Monday, October 26, 2015.

The money comes from the 26th American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament held in South Lake Tahoe in July.

Sierra Central Credit Union opens in South Lake Tahoe

Celebrity Golf Tournament gives over $115,000 to local causes and charities

South Lake Tahoe non-profits were awarded $48,000 during the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority board meeting today. The 22 groups were each given between $1,000 and $3,000. The LTVA, in partnership with NBC Sports and American Century Investments, previously directed an additional $67,200 through on-site volunteer organizations and other efforts during tournament week to area high schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Booster Club, Boys and Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe, and the Gene Upshaw Scholarship

Gangs are a problem in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe may be a small city of around 23,000 residents but it isn't immune to the big city problems of gangs.

Our mountain hamlet has white gangs, a black gang, hispanic gangs, motorcycle gangs and even white supremacists and sometimes they cross racial lines in order to beef up numbers. The gang names won't be mentioned in this article because of the advertising value it would give them as they try and recruit children and new members.

Last week's arrest of three gang members for a home invasion robbery brought the comment to the forefront..."Tahoe has gangs?"

County Supervisors holding 10/28 meeting in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe residents will have a chance to see the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors in action on Tuesday, October 28 as they have their meeting on the east slope.

Many topics pertaining to the South SHore will be on the agenda.

The South Lake Tahoe Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan will be presented by a consultant team. A vote will then be taken on whether to approve the plan and start the environmental review process. Those costs would be split with the City of South Lake Tahoe.

Agencies and public work together to keep Lake Tahoe beaches clean

Debris on Lake Tahoe’s beaches affects everyone’s enjoyment of the lake, and trash and debris on the beaches and streets can easily find its way to the lake and adversely impact lake clarity, water quality and wildlife.

Large Mackinaw Caught By Local Fisherman in Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe fishing captain Gene St. Denis has been in search of "the big one" in the waters of Lake Tahoe.

Last week, he caught two big ones, totaling 48 pounds, 10 ounces which is his personal best. The owner of Blue Ribbon Fishing Charters previously caught two totaling 44 pounds about 15 years ago and he's been trying to better that ever since.

One of the Mackinaw weighed in at 29 pounds and the other was 18 pounds. The record for Lake Tahoe was set in 1974 when a 37 pound, 6 ounce Mackinaw was pulled out of the lake.

Arrest made in early morning stabbing death in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe police have arrested a man they believe stabbed a 57-year-old family member to death early Wednesday morning on Wildwood Avenue.

Sean-Paul Andrew MacIntire, 32, of South Lake Tahoe faces first degree murder charges in the stabbing death of Shirley Gordon, said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Brian Williams.

Brush fire knocked down off of Eloise in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe fire crews responded Tuesday night to a small brush fire, about quarter acre or less in size off of Eloise and 7th street. It was knocked down at 8:16 p.m. Firefighters who arrived reported smoke billowing with a low rate of spread and were able to get a handle on it with the fire trucks called to it. Firefighters built a "scratch line" ring around the fire and quickly knocked it down. The fire was called in at 8:10 p.m.

World's Longest Bicycle Parade at Lake Tahoe

The holiday arrived early for 27 South Lake Tahoe non-profit organizations Thursday, Dec. 8, as $100,000 in charitable contributions was distributed on behalf of LIVESTRONG® and the American Century Championship by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.

“We’re fortunate to have the support from LIVESTRONG, NBC Sports and American Century Investments to assist to the local community,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the LTVA in a news release. “In addition to an outstanding event which attracts visitors, our 22-year partnership also helps local groups in need.”
