Fire Chief tells how Measure S can help fund needs in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It will be hard to find someone in favor of taxes, but with them being the reason many things in this world are funded, they are accepted to some degree.

On November 3, the City of South Lake Tahoe will be asking voters for support of a one-cent local sales tax known as Measure S.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another 27 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since Friday. Of those, nine are in El Dorado Hills, four in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, seven in the Greater Placerville area, one in North County, and five in the Lake Tahoe Region.

The new cases are six under the age of 18, 12 aged 18-49, and seven aged 50-64, and two aged 65 or older.

Another 447 people were tested for the coronavirus and 420 negative tests results were received.

Hazy and sunny start to week in Lake Tahoe, chance of rain/upper elevation snow by the end

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Change is in the air for the Lake Tahoe region this week. We'll be saying goodbye to the 80s and 90s, and hello to more seasonable 60s and 70s.

By the end of the week there is even a slight chance of rain and upper-elevation snow (yes, I said that word).

High pressure will produce warm afternoons, dry conditions, and mainly light winds through mid-week. Mornings will remain cool to chilly. Areas of smoke and haze will linger into Monday or Tuesday. Cooler, breezy, and wet conditions are possible Friday through next weekend.

California water year ends below average after decent start

California’s Water Year 2020 has come to a close and while parts of Southern California experienced above average precipitation, Northern California was mostly dry.

The water year ended below average and further demonstrated the impact of climate change on the state’s water supply, according to a report released by the Department of Water Resources (DWR).

Citizen science drives environmental restoration and reservation in Tahoe-Truckee Region

LAKE TAHOE - Volunteer citizen scientists working with the League to Save Lake Tahoe conducted surveys of Donner and Spooner Lakes to detect aquatic invasive species, and restored native wetland habitat in Johnson Meadow in September. Both efforts are aimed at preserving the Tahoe-Truckee region’s unique ecology.

Column: Community health goes beyond health care

When we look at our community’s health, there are many other factors that determine a person’s ability to thrive - beyond health care services. Social determinants of health are defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as the conditions in places where people live, learn, work, and play that affect outcomes for health and quality of life. These determinants are complex, and can be deeply rooted; including income and employment opportunities, housing instability, food insecurity, family and social support, transportation, and adverse life effects.

Howl-O-Ween Party at Earthwise Pet Lake Tahoe

Batten sentenced 26 years to life for his part in South Lake Tahoe murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - He was the star running back of Benicia High School before graduating in 2015. He led the Panthers with 901 rushing yards and 15 total touchdowns his senior year and was named their Most Valuable Offensive Player.

Less than one year later he was in South Lake Tahoe with a group of men accused of fatally shooting Dennis "Spike" Wright, Jr. over a drug deal at the Beverly Lodge.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another 22 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday. Of those, seven are in El Dorado Hills, four in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, six in the Greater Placerville area, one in South County, and four in the Lake Tahoe Region.

The new cases are two under the age of 18, 12 aged 18-49, and eight aged 50-64.

Another 211 people were tested for the coronavirus and 189 negative tests results were received.

There have been another three assumed recoveries with 135 assumed active cases.

National Night Out celebrated on the South Shore

National Night Out makes a return to the South Shore on Tuesday, October 6 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Tahoe Paradise Park.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office will be hosting the event along with other first responders and specialty teams including the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and the county's Search and Rescue team.

There will be department swag for the kids and informative booths. It was originally planned as a drive through event but that has been changed to one kids and families can walk through.

Column: The importance of breast cancer screening

The reminder to schedule a breast cancer screening test comes on strong during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. This month, let each splash of pink you see be an encouragement to get screened with a self-exam, physician exam, or a mammogram.

It’s also a good time to get a feel for your own unique breast density, and establish a baseline to help identify warning signs of breast cancer, including:

- A lump in the breast or armpit
- Swelling or thickening of all or part of the breast
- Dimpling or skin irritation of breast skin
- Localized, persistent breast pain

USFS closes Taylor Creek for one month due to crowd and safety concerns

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The numbers of people who normally visit Taylor Creek for the fall spawning of the Kokanee salmon has prompted forest officials to close the popular area October 2 - November 2, 2020.

Due to continued public health safety concerns related to COVID-19, trail improvement work, the risk of bear-human encounters and in order to discourage large groups from gathering, the area is closed.

Give Tahoe grants available for South Lake Tahoe non-profits

Give Tahoe, formerly South Lake Tahoe Endowment Fund and a fund of the El Dorado Community Foundation, will continue the ongoing work to deliver important philanthropic funds to the community. This year the challenges facing the community of South Lake Tahoe look different than ever before. With a summer of experience, and the concerns and problem sets that developed over the months, it was determined that a pivot in what Give Tahoe grants to is necessary, timely and well-focused.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another seven residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday. Of those, four are in El Dorado Hills, three in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue and none in the Lake Tahoe Region.

Another 189 people were tested for the coronavirus and 182 negative tests results were received.

There have been another 12 assumed recoveries with 109 assumed active cases.

One person has been admitted to the ICU for COVID-19 and there are currently no suspected cases of COVID-19 in the hospital.

Teens 4 Tahoe hosts Wilder Than Wild virtual screening

Teens 4 Tahoe, an environmental stewardship group formed by six teens in collaboration with the nonprofit Tahoe Fund, will host a free virtual screening of the award-winning documentary Wilder Than Wild: Fire, Forests, and the Future on October 4, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The virtual event, proposed by the teens living in Tahoe and around the Bay Area, will be the group’s first effort to help educate their peers about wildfire preparedness. It will include viewing of the one-hour long documentary followed by an online Q&A session with Kevin White, the film’s producer.

Monthly gaming report: Casino revenues down In second full month of being reopened

STATELINE, Nev. - Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $743,038,562 for the month of August 2020, the third month of casinos reopening in the state after being closed due to the coronavirus. This amounts to a 22.08 percent decrease compared to August 2019, when licensees reported a gaming win of $953,623,896, according to the monthly report released today by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

LTUSD shares next phase of South Lake Tahoe school reopening plans

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be adopting their previously released Pandemic Educational Plan with some modifications as they move into Phase 2 starting October 12, 2020.

During their special meeting Monday, several parents, teachers and trustees voiced their opinions and concerns representing all sides, from keeping students in Phase 1, moving to Phase 2, as well as skipping to Phase 3.

Hilary Roverud officially named Development Services Director

After more than 15 years of service, Hilary Roverud has been named Development Services Director after filling the position on a temporary basis since the resignation of Kevin Fabino on July 6.

“Hilary is incredibly skilled and loved by the staff she has worked with for so long,” said City Manager Joe Irvin, “As a community, we are lucky to have her in this leadership role and know she will continue moving that department in the right direction.”

South Lake Tahoe City Council candidate leaves the race

There are now nine South Lake Tahoe residents vying for one of two open spots on City Council.

Last week, Luca Genasci made an announcement on social media that he would be discontinuing his campaign. Citing a growing workload with a new business opening, Genasci said did not have "ample time" to dedicate to his new fiancé, family, friends, businesses and local politics.

Genasci owns Lake Tahoe Aleworx with two locations at Stateline and the Y, and a new bar, the Cocktail Corner, next door to the Y location in The Crossing at Tahoe Valley.

El Dorado County Animal Services rescues two dogs abandoned on US50

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County Animal Services is looking for information from anyone who may have witnessed two German Shepherd dogs being abandoned on Highway 50 near Bridal Veil Falls and Fresh Pond in earlier this month. The young adult male dogs, which were found malnourished and with their metal chain collars embedded into their necks, were rescued by Animal Services officers and are now safely at the Animal Services Shelter in Diamond Springs.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another 31 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since Friday. Of those, eight are in El Dorado Hills, ten in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, three in North County, two in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, three in Greater Placerville and five in the Lake Tahoe Region.

This is the largest number of cases for a three-day period since the pandemic started.

Of these new cases, six are under the age of 18, 20 are in the 18-49 age group, four are aged 50-64 and one aged 65 or older.

Stateline power outage caused by water in underground vault

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utility and NV Energy customers in the Stateline area were without power for several hours Sunday evening and early Monday due to water that got into an unground vault on the California side. This required significant additional work to safely restore power to the six Nevada customers and 426 California customers.

Detours available for two road projects in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As a part of the 2020 Road Rehabilitation Program, the City of South Lake Tahoe will working on two projects over the next two weeks. They will be reconstructing 3rd & 4th Streets from Lake Tahoe Boulevard to South Avenue and working on the Bellamy Court parking project.

New Jersey man's body found in Lake Tahoe seven weeks after boat washed ashore

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Dumont, New Jersey man missing in Lake Tahoe since August has been found.

Ryan Normoyle, 29, had rented a boat from the Ski Run Boat Company on August 10, 2020. That night, the boat washed ashore in Glenbrook, Nevada but Ryan was not with the boat.

Warm and dry week ahead in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Northeasterly winds will continue to keep smoke out of the region through at least early Tuesday. An area of high pressure will build into the Great Basin leading to warming temperatures and dry conditions through at least next weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Power outage in the Stateline area of South Lake Tahoe

11:20 p.m. UPDATE: Power is still out to 301 Stateline customers of Liberty Utilities and six NV Energy customers in the area. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to Stateline Avenue after smoke was seen coming out through a manhole cover.

The cause of the outage and smoke is under investigation.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews from Liberty Utilities are working on a power outage Sunday evening in the Stateline area of South Lake Tahoe, one that is affecting 426 customers.
