Youth immediately began playing on the park equipment and the basketball court was ready to host its first game while hot dogs and hamburgers were grilled for the crowd of families and dignitaries to enjoy.

Fire restrictions begin Monday in the Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 07/07/2012 - 11:49amFire restrictions will go into effect in the Lake Tahoe Basin on Monday July 9. A Forest Order has been issued to provide for public safety through the end of the official 2012 fire season. (see PDF below.)
Campfires, including charcoal barbecues, are prohibited except in exempted recreation sites. Smoking on National Forest land is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or within an exempted recreation site. Fire restrictions are intended to reduce the possibility of human-caused wildfires over the summer season.
Forest Service continues project to eliminate invasive weeds from the Lake Tahoe Basin

Work will begin Monday, July 9 through Thursday, July 12, 2012, according to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
Town of Mammoth Lakes declares bankruptcy

"It's wish this hadn't happened," said Mayor Matthew Lehman, "but it's not the way the cards fell for us."
The town immediately issued a press release regarding the Town council decision.

We have now reached the 5th anniversary of the devastating Angora Fire which ravaged our community. The large scale wildfires in Colorado and New Mexico should serve as warnings to us all. After experiencing a very mild winter, our area faces a dangerous wild land fire season. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has increased its vigilance in enforcing state and city fireworks laws to protect public health and safety.

The combination of a particularly dry winter and spring, parched vegetation, lingering drought conditions, increasing daytime temperatures, and recent human-caused fires forced the Forest Service to implement the conditions.

Burn pile spreads into brush fire on Cold Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe (updated)
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 05/25/2012 - 11:36amUpdate 12:22PM: A small brush fire on Cold Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe is contained and burned about one-quarter of an acre, reports U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Cheva Heck. Fire personnel from Lake Valley Fire Protection District and South Lake Tahoe and U.S. Forest Service brought the fire to containment. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Heck said. Initial reports that came in said the fire started as a backyard burn pile.

TRE Fire grows to 6,600 acres
Submitted by admin on Wed, 05/23/2012 - 11:42amDouglas County sent out an update this morning on the TRE Fire, which they say is now 6,600 acres. They also believe the fire was caused by a private residential open burn.

The fire has grown to 6,600 acres burned. 2 homes and 17 outbuildings have been reported damaged or burned from the fire. No personnel injuries have been reported or discovered.
Topaz fire in Douglas County grows to 4,400 acres, officials revise homes destroyed at 2, with 17 structures burned
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 05/22/2012 - 7:16pmDouglas County officials scaled back the number of homes burned in the TRE Fire on Tuesday night to two homes from seven, however, 17 outbuildings were destroyed and the fire burning in south Douglas County at Topaz Ranch Estates has grown to 4,400 acres.
Sgt. Jim Halsey of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office reported the clarification in a news release. The fire continues to move in a northeasterly direction, away from homes in the Topaz Ranch Estates residential area.
South Lake Tahoe man, Robert Ranieri, dies in skydiving accident

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office confirms that Robert Ranieri, 29, died after landing in Lake Tahoe. He was found submerged in the lake by divers. Ranieri was among three who were skydiving earlier Tuesday morning from a helicopter. Two other men were found safe. The following is a news statement from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office:

Improvements would include trail upgrades, a new surface tow lift, a new Kids Adventure Zone, an outdoor event facility, summer four-wheel drive tours and a new summer hiking trail. These projects are consistent with the improvements identified in Heavenly's Master Plan Amendment and are intended to improve the overall quality of the visitor experience.

Public campground fees to increase by $2 at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 05/03/2012 - 4:25pmDue to increased costs of doing business, fees at campgrounds operated by California Land Management on National Forest System lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin will rise by $2 this season.
Camping fees will increase at Fallen Leaf (now $30), Meeks Bay (now $25), William Kent (now $25), Kaspian (now $17) and Nevada Beach (now $30 for regular sites, $34 for premium sites) campgrounds. Even with the fee increase, CLM campgrounds are below the cost of privately operated campgrounds in the basin. The fees at Bayview Campground, beaches and day-use areas remain the same.

The two-year deal brings the women’s and men’s moguls, aerials and dual moguls back to South Lake Tahoe for the second time. Lake Tahoe environmental report shows promising results

The comprehensive report offers a snapshot of the health of the ecosystem in the Tahoe Basin by documenting the status and trends of more than 100 environmental standards ranging from air and water quality to fish and wildlife. The biggest improvements were documented in air and water quality, and scenic resources.

Washoe offers sacred name 'Tahnu Leweh' for Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 04/13/2012 - 4:00amWith the Washoe Tribe's offering and support of El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago, a move is underway to rename Lakeview Commons Park at South Lake Tahoe in time for an official June 20 dedication.
Given its 6,000 year history, the Washoe Tribe has presented the name Tahnu Leweh (Pronounced Tah-New Lay-Way) which, in native language, means "all the people's place." It is a name the Tribe would like to gift to El Dorado County and South Lake Tahoe as a symbol of peace, prosperity and goodness, said Darrel Cruz, Culture and Language Director for the Washoe Tribe.
