Skireports.com came out with a ranking today based on Facebook fans and Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe, which has 93,887 Facebook followers, ranked second among the most popular resorts in North America. Northstar ranked eighth in the field and Squaw Valley, 14th.

Kyburz post office threatened with closure, cuts to service

A sign on the Kyburz Lodge reads "Welcome to Kyburz. Now leaving Kyburz," a reference to the blink-and-you-miss-it community along Highway 50 halfway between the South Shore and Placerville.
But the mountain hamlet is actually home to 110 people and the community is fighting to save its 150-year-old post office, located in the lodge.

Dry weather to persist through Christmas weekend, snow possible Tuesday

Dry weather will prevail through the Christmas holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Lows tonight will drop into the single digits to lower teens across western Nevada, with lows below zero in the Sierra valleys. A warming trend will occur for the holiday weekend as high pressure moves over western Nevada. Highs Christmas Day will warm into the lower 50s. There is the potential for light rain and mountain snow next Tuesday through Thursday.

Northstar California completes $30 million in upgrades

Northstar California did up things well Tuesday (name change, used to be "at-Tahoe") by officially opening its new multimillion dollar Zephyr lodge at the top of Zephyr lift and a new chairlift, the Promised Land Express. The new quad chair services two new trails. This completes a spending program of $30 million on upgrades, trails and support activities at the Lake Tahoe resort.

Mountain Milers Donate $7,050 to Tahoe Heritage Foundation

The Great Recession continues to rear its head here at home, with demands on social services soaring and a genuine fear that South Shore’s food bank won’t be able to provide Christmas dinner for a record number of families in need.

Golf course battle heats up with lawsuit, vandalism

UPDATED 8:30AM: California State Parks is investigating vandalism that happened over the weekend on Washoe Meadows State Park land near the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Electronic equipment and river monitoring devices were damaged or destroyed. Two logs were found to have graffiti sprayed on them, saying "Stop Golf" and "Save the Park."

Tahoe planning agency to look at Homewood plan; Upper Truckee river plan removed from agenda

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will hear plans on the Homewood project on the west shore but has scrapped plans to discuss the Upper Truckee River Restoration project during a two-day meeting of the Governing Board.
According to a news release, the Dec. 14 agenda remains unchanged and includes a proposed adoption of the Final Environmental Impact Review and Environmental Impact Statement for Homewood Mountain Resort. The meetings are on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at Granlibakken, and Thursday, Dec. 15 at the TRPA offices.
