El Dorado County to handle most residential, multi-family and commercial permits for TRPA

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In a move to help property and business owners save time and money, El Dorado County will begin processing additional permits on behalf of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) starting January 28, 2020.

Protecting Lake Tahoe’s environment is the paramount goal of the TRPA and in meeting that goal, a TRPA permit is required for most construction projects inside the Lake Tahoe Basin. This runs the gamut from the addition of a new deck to a sign for a new business.

South Tahoe High students 'building' up their skills for the workforce

Woman arrested on felony DUI charges after two-car collision in South Lake Tahoe

7:45 p.m.- A 44-year-old woman has been arrested on felony DUI charges after the Nisan XTerra she was driving collided with a Toyota Tundra on US50 and Ski Run Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe at 5:12 p.m. Friday, December 20.

She is currently at Barton Hospital being treated for an injury and to have her blood drawn (at her request). Once released she will be booked into the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe, according to SLTPD Sgt. Nick Carlquist.

Purchase of one electric bus, four diesel buses on LTUSD agenda Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Timing seems perfect to have a fleet of electric buses for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD), but trustees have the purchase of just one on their Friday night agenda along with the purchase of four diesel buses.

The Board's annual organizational meeting is set for December 13 at 5:00 p.m. instead of their normal Tuesday meeting. During the meeting, they will elect a new board president and clerk, and elect representatives to El Dorado County School Boards Association and Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, and assign annual duties for the trustees.

No planned weekend traffic relief in Meyers this winter

MEYERS, Calif. - Residents attending the El Dorado County Town Hall meeting in Meyers on Thursday didn't hear what they wanted to about the upcoming winter and any plans that could be put in place to alleviate traffic jams in neighborhoods.

As is the case with all meetings concerning traffic in Meyers, there were several audience members with ideas from instituting maximum vehicles allowed in the Lake Tahoe Basin to turn restrictions and road closures during specific hours.

Judge rules that South Lake Tahoe cannabis microbusiness approvals can move forward

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Sacramento Superior Court Judge has narrowed the scope of the temporary injunction filed against the City of South Lake Tahoe, the City Council, and the Development Services Director Kevin Fabino on November 15.. The judge ruled on Friday, November 22 that his previous order will not affect microbusinesses, just retail sales, according to South Lake Tahoe City Attorney Heather Stroud who was in Sacramento for the ruling.

Local man files temporary injunction; South Lake Tahoe cannabis permit process on hold

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is another delay in cannabis businesses being able to move forward in South Lake Tahoe.

Local business owner John Runnels filed a temporary injunction against the City of South Lake Tahoe, the City Council and the Development Services Director Kevin Fabino in Superior Court in Sacramento Friday afternoon. That action has put a temporary halt to all cannabis-related permits being processed in the city until a December 20 court date.

A drop in temperature but continued dry in South Lake Tahoe's forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Quiet weather and light winds continue this holiday weekend with above-average afternoon and seasonal morning temperatures. High
pressure weakens at the end of the week with more cloud cover and cooling daytime
temperatures.

A change in the overall weather pattern is expected in the long term as the ridge of high pressure that has been locked over the west coast for the last few weeks begins to weaken. However, there aren`t any strong signals for precipitation either, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Caltrans and partners officially open first of two roundabouts in Meyers

Caltrans addressed what they reported to be an increase of accidents at the intersection of US50 and SR89 with a $7.3 million roundabout in Meyers, and today there was a ribbon-cutting with local partners to officially open it up.

What used to be a T-intersection with one stop sign is now a three-leg roundabout with a bypass lane. Years of studies, planning, environmental reviews, and engineering led to this past summer's build by Q&D Construction.

Carmen Elaine Withrow 1942 ~ 2019

Carmen Elaine Withrow (Terrell) passed away peacefully on October 8th, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, she will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved her. She was a compassionate person, kind to everyone, not one to talk about others and always there for you in a time of need. Newly selected fire chief decides not to come to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Citing personal reasons, the man selected to become South Lake Tahoe's next fire chief has decided to not accept the position just five days before being sworn in.

On October 23 it was announced that Ken Harrison, a former battalion chief with the Orange County Fire Authority, had accepted the position and was preparing to move to South Lake Tahoe.

Downed power line on US50 in Kyburz closes lanes in both directions

9:00 p.m. update: Both lanes pf US50 have been cleared and are open to through traffic.

5:20 p.m. update: Westbound traffic is being allowed to move. Shortly, one-way controlled traffic will begin.

Traffic is backed up on US50 near Kyburz after a downed power line fell onto the roadway October 27. According to Caltrans, both eastbound and westbound traffic is stopped.

The incident started at 2:55 p.m. Sunday and as of 4:15 p.m., there is no estimated time of clearing.

Use SR 89 to SR 88 or I80 to head west from Lake Tahoe at this time.

Caples Fire is now 73 percent contained; 3,434 acres burned

The Caples Fire has been transferred back to USFS and managed by a smaller Type 4 organization now that it is 73 percent contained. A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team is assigned to the fire to determine what actions need to be taken to repair damage or prevent further damage from erosion and precipitation.

What started as a USFS prescribed burn on September 30 was reclassified as a wildland fire ten days later, giving crews extra and needed resources from local and state responders when winds fanned flames.

Seasonal temperatures with wind and chance of rain in South Lake Tahoe

After pleasant weather conditions today, gusty winds and some fire weather, travel, and recreation concerns return Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Today will be characterized by generally light winds and average temperatures in South Lake Tahoe, with some sun. Expect this to change by Saturday, however, as a wave drops out of the Pacific Northwest bringing gusty winds to the region. So, if you have outdoor fall and Halloween decorations, today will be a good day to check that they are secured.

Column: Discount Brokers Finally Found the Bottom

Discount brokers competing to drive client growth have been in a race to the bottom when it comes to fees. I for one believe this is a good thing. Yes, more people should have access to the financial markets at lower costs. That is a good thing. This could even be good as these firms may actually compete with traditional brick and mortar banks for new clients as well and bringing a higher level of banking experience to more people.

City looks at South Lake Tahoe Police Take-Home Vehicle Program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Chief Brian Uhler presented the idea of a take-home vehicle policy for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) to the City Council Tuesday, something that many other departments across the world have found to be successful in both recruiting and retention. Not only for these reasons, but take-home vehicles have also resulted in cleaner cars with fewer mechanical problems, longer life-spans and reduced costs.

El Dorado County Income Support programs in South Lake Tahoe moving into new home

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The CalFresh, Medi-Cal, CalWORKs, General Assistance, Welfare-to-Work programs and Employment Resource Center for El Dorado County at South Lake Tahoe will be moving into a new location on October 28.

The County announced earlier this year they had purchased the old post office at 3368 Sandy Way in order to move offices over from across the street as a "new campus" is created for services.

Achievable housing project planned for North Lake Tahoe

Placer County has purchased the 11-acre Nahas property near Tahoe City for $3.42 million. They are working with housing developer partner Related-Pacific Companies to develop conceptual options for a potential mixed-use commercial and achievable housing project on the site.

While the purchase represents a step forward in bringing more achievable housing to North Lake Tahoe, development concepts for the site are still in early stages and no project proposal has yet been brought forward for formal consideration or approval.

Low nighttime temperatures aiding suppression of Caples Fire

There was minimal fire activity on the Caples Fire last night due to near freezing nighttime temperatures, high relative humidity, and very light winds. The natural wind patterns from the west/southwest will continue to be good for suppression actions. Temperatures are moderate during the day and the relative humidity is low, and those nighttime conditions help with light winds and high relative humidity recovery.

The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings and fire weather watches for areas of northern, central and southern California. City Council approves first cannabis development agreement for South Lake Tahoe

Two Lake Tahoe boat ramps to continue watercraft inspections as roadside stations close

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – This week marks the last full week of summer operations for watercraft inspection stations around Lake Tahoe. Starting Oct. 1 the duties will move from roadside stations to inspecting only at the Cave Rock and Lake Forest launch ramps for the winter season.

Prescribed burns to resume around Lake Tahoe Basin

The Lake Tahoe Basin Fall Prescribed Fire Program may begin as early as September 24, 2019, under the management of the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state and federal fire and land management agencies.

Weather and conditions permitting, California State Park crews may begin prescribed fire operations in Burton Creek State Park near Tahoe City and in a couple of weeks move to D.L. Bliss State Park near Tahoma.

Boys & Girls Club helping out LTUSD by sharing their space; Asks community for help in return

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students from Sierra House Elementary have had their school days askew since a November 2018 fire forced them out of their home campus. For the last ten months, the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) site has opened the doors on the space they rent from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and shared with students during the school day.

BGCLT are scheduled to break ground next Spring on a new "clubhouse" that will be built next door, but in the meantime they share each room with staff and students from Sierra House.

A life-long dream came true for South Tahoe High English teacher Bridey Heidel when she met Simon LeBon of Duran Duran on Friday night during their outdoor concert at Harveys. Not only did see meet him during a personal one-on-one back stage before the concert, she was also brought on stage for hugs, holding hands, a kiss on the cheek, and a song.

"I feel like I'm going to explode," said Bridey after meeting LeBon and waiting to go on stage. She had just spent time with him in the backstage sitting room, getting to chat with the lead singer and others.
