Drug Take Back Day nets 50 pounds of prescription medication
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/06/2015 - 8:05amThe South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition collaborated with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and the South Tahoe Police Department for the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, September 26, 2015, which saw approximately 50 pounds of unwanted prescription medication turned in to authorities. The event gave South Lake Tahoe residents an opportunity to dispose of all unwanted, unused, or expired medications for free with no questions asked. No liquids or needles were accepted and residents were asked to remove all personal information from bottles before dropping off medications.
Reno Gazette Journal files lawsuit against Sparks over pot business licenses
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/19/2015 - 11:05pmThe Reno Gazette-Journal filed a lawsuit Friday against the city of Sparks in an effort to compel them to release the names of medical marijuana business licensees.
As the newspaper expands its coverage of Nevada’s burgeoning medical marijuana industry, the RGJ has requested and collected copies of current business licenses for cultivation centers, dispensaries and production facilities in the area. Reno and Washoe County both have policies to release all of the information that the licenses entail.
What is a Chautauqua?

Chautauqua was a very popular adult education movement in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Named after Chautauqua Lake where the first was held, Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s.
Former US President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America."
The aftermath of Proposition 47: Property crime up in South Lake Tahoe

Since then, South Lake Tahoe and other cities across the state are seeing a big increase in crime. Prop. 47 reduced the penalties for certain theft and drug crimes in California. Several crimes that were once a felony because a misdemeanor overnight.

El Dorado County schools chief apologizes for DUI
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/25/2015 - 10:41pmEl Dorado County Superintendent of Schools Jeremy Meyers was booked and released from El Dorado County Jail on Saturday, a condition of his sentencing for driving under the influence in June.
Meyers’ attorney, Paul Zappettini, said Meyers was cited June 9 for driving under the influence of alcohol. He appeared in court Aug. 10 and received a five-day alternative sentence, which was served as house arrest, Zappettini said. He also was fined and faces suspension of his driver’s license. As a condition of his sentence, Meyers also was required to be booked at the El Dorado County jail.

Carson City teen dies at Lake Tahoe in water-related accident
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/22/2015 - 8:57pmA Carson City teenager died Saturday after authorities were called to Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe for an accident on the water. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed the victim is a 15-year-old Carson High School student.
The teen’s name has not been released. A chaplain from Carson City has notified the parents, said Furlong. The teen died after he was taken to a Reno hospital after emergency crews were called to Sand Harbor at around noon Saturday. Washoe County authorities would not confirm if it was a possible drowning.
Missing Lake Tahoe paddle boarder found in Missouri

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) investigators had been working on the case since he disappeared on Wednesday, not knowing if he were dead or alive. The floating paddleboard with GoPro camera was found floating about 1/2 mile off shore by the Timber Cove Marina.
Thrill seekers descend upon South Lake Tahoe for unique race

The multi-sport expedition begins on the South Shore at Lake Tahoe August 19 or 20 and spans more than 450 miles of rugged terrain throughout the Sierra Nevada.

Remains found on Spooner Summit in 2014 identified
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/23/2015 - 10:49pmThe human remains found in King Canyon near Spooner Summit in June of 2014 have been identified as Ryan Wallace Osburn.
At the time of his death, the 32-year-old Osburn was a Reno resident.
The remains had been subjected to heavy animal predation which required the identification of the remains by DNA analysis and comparison to family members.

Local wrestling coaches Ryan Wallace and Dave Borges are putting on a first for the area, the Inaugural Beach Wrestling Tournament will be held on the El Dorado Beach at Lakeview Commons on Saturday, July 25, 2015.
South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle and the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe are sponsoring the event which gets under way at high noon. Registration and weigh-ins begin at 11 a.m.
Officer identified in South Lake Tahoe shooting
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/14/2015 - 9:53pmThe name of the South Lake Tahoe Police Officer involved in the June 15 shooting of 22-year-old Kris Jackson has been released.
Officer Joshua Klinge was the officer who responded to a 2:40 a.m. call about a woman screaming and crying at the Tahoe Hacienda Inn on Lake Tahoe Blvd. The officer shot Jackson in the torso after feeling threatened according to earlier reports. Jackson died shortly afterwards at Barton Memorial Hospital.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested on felony drug charges
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/06/2015 - 11:57amAn El Dorado County Sheriff (EDSO) Deputy out on patrol in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, July 3 witnessed a man jaywalking across Highway 50 near the intersection of Third and Fourth Streets.
Since the man, 57-year-old Michael Harry Horny, appeared to be under the influence, the deputy followed him into Burrito Brothers where Horny headed to the restroom and stayed for a long period of time. Concerned Horny perhaps had passed out, or was ill, the deputy knocked on the door. Horny and local law enforcement have had a lot of contact over the past several years and he was known to the deputy.

Car thefts in South Lake Tahoe rose in 2013, leveled off in 2014
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/01/2015 - 1:28pmIn the State of California, vehicle thefts dropped 7% in 2014, marking the second straight year of decline.
For South Lake Tahoe, it was the first year of decline in three years.
In 2013, vehicle thefts in the city limits jumped 46% from 37 stolen cars to 54. Following in 2014, there was a drop of 7% when 50 cars were stolen according to figures obtained by South Tahoe Now from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
To date, 2015 is looking to be a repeat of last year with 25 car thefts through June.

Just in time for the July 4th holiday weekend, South Lake Tahoe will be getting their own set that will alert drivers the time it will take them for destinations between South Lake Tahoe and Placerville.
Mandatory vaccine bill goes to Governor Brown's desk

Jerry Brown's desk, with supporters urging him to sign it and opponents promising to stand vigil around the clock to convince him to veto it.
On Monday, a majority of the California state Senate again passed Senate Bill 277, incendiary legislation that would require almost all schoolchildren to be fully vaccinated in order to attend public or private school, regardless of their parents' personal or religious beliefs.
The only exception would be for medical reasons.
Barton Auxiliary giver $13,500 to local students

Grand Jury finds Auditor/Controller to be a bully and uncooperative
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/17/2015 - 9:15pmThe Grand Jury investigated several allegations surrounding voter elected El Dorado County Auditor/Controller Joe Harn, including the fact that he lost the county more than $3.5 million due to incomplete paperwork submitted to the State of California.
The Grand Jury also found that Harn is guilty of disrespectful and harassing behavior toward others. One member of the Board of Supervisors told them, "Everybody knows Joe Harn is a bully. They have known it for twenty years.”
Hikers injured at Horsetail Falls and Cascade Falls
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/11/2015 - 11:46pmTwo different backcountry hikers needed to be rescued by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team on Monday, June 8.
The first incident was at 12:43 p.m. when an adult male hiker fell at Cascade Falls, resulting in traumatic injuries. With the assistance of ground personnel from Lake Valley Fire Department, USFS and Cal Fire, rescuers were able to provide care and get the hiker hoisted out on a California Highway Patrol helicopter. The CHP helicopter transferred the hiker to a CALSTAR medical air ambulance, and then transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

How Leadership Lake Tahoe changed my life

What started as an annual joint venture between the two Chambers of Commerce that served the South Shore is now a biennial leadership experience.
I was a member of Leadership Lake Tahoe in 2006 and I can say that it changed my life.
Vaccine exemptions: California Senate overwhelmingly passes SB 277
Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/17/2015 - 8:28amA controversial bill that abolishes "personal belief exemptions" for vaccinations won overwhelming approval in the California Senate on Thursday, bolstering supporters' hopes that it will also clear the Assembly and be signed into law.
The measure by Democratic Sens. Richard Pan, of Sacramento, and Ben Allen, of Santa Monica -- introduced after a outbreak of measles in December at Disneyland sickened 136 Californians -- passed 25-10 after the two senators agreed to compromises aimed at easing its passage.
Over 300 participate in the South Lake Tahoe Polio Walk

Over 300 people joined in the 3k walk which proceeded along Highway 50 in Stateline, past Edgewood Tahoe, by Lakeside Beach and back to the beginning at the corner of Stateline Avenue and Highway 50 at McP's Taphouse.
Police officers honored during South Lake Tahoe ceremony

"We are normal people who are asked to do extraordinary tasks," SLT Police Chief Brian Uhler told the audience of the officer's families, friends, City Council, city staff, community members and other area law enforcement including the El Dorado County Sheriff, CHP and the FBI.
Mental Health Awareness: Law enforcement on front lines with mentally ill

In South Lake Tahoe, police officers and sheriff's deputies are forced to become front line mental health workers, and since they are on the front lines, Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) is an important part of their job.
El Dorado County received a grant for the Sheriff's Department to receive the training, and, to date, four sergeants and 18 deputies have been trained. While most patrol the west slope, South Lake Tahoe has three CIT officers (two sergeants and one deputy).

50% of us will experience a mental health challenge in our lifetime.
These are significant numbers, and because of them, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in South Lake Tahoe, May 10-16 is Mental Health Awareness Week. During a recent City Council meeting, the Mayor signed a proclamation to show the City's support of this significant week.

Master mechanics maintain City's aging fleet of vehicles
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/21/2015 - 8:24pm"You got to do something as doing nothing is costing you money," City of South Lake Tahoe Fleet Manager Ron Corbett told the City Council Tuesday.
The 260 vehicles and equipment maintained by Corbett's tea of master mechanics have a continually rising age. The City's police cars have an average age of 10 years, the Fire Department's vehicles are an average of 11 years old and the rest of the fleet has been around for an average of 17 years. If the fire and police departments hadn't just purchased new vehicles the ages of vehicles would have been much higher.

April 25, 2015 - 8:00am Free course in advocacy 25-April-2015 8:00a.m. - 12p.m. at the Genoa Volunteer Firestation. This course is taught by volunteers from NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness. It is taught at UNR to students majoring in social work in their senior year. Over 4,000 people have taken this course nationally.

Barton Auxiliary donates $230,000 and recognizes volunteers

More than 80 volunteers from the hospital, gift shop, and The Attic Thrift Store attended and were recognized for their service and gifts.
