Picnic

The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association invite you to spend a Friday morning combining art and nature on a guided hike to Picnic Rock. Along the trail, participants will dive into wildflower exploration, while stopping frequently to investigate the colorful jewels that grow from Tahoe's soils. We will have tea on top of picnic rock as TINS naturalist, Sarah Hockensmith will lead a brief sketching workshop to invite an artistic nature experience while discovering flower patterns and details you may not otherwise notice.

In a return engagement, Sacramento area band, Todd Morgan and the Emblems, will bring 50s, 60s and Rockabilly style music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm, Thursday, July 26.

Todd Morgan and the Emblems is a young four-piece band, led by singer-songwriter and musician Todd Morgan. The band’s music consists of original pop and rock music, along with covers of 50s and 60s Rock-n-Roll and up to present day pop and rock songs. The band has recorded 3 albums.

The Fourth of July holiday period is upon us and signifies the busiest time of year in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) asks residents and visitors to keep the following tips in mind to help everyone enjoy a safe and fun holiday.

To promote public safety, the annual alcohol ban will be in effect at the following locations:

· Nevada Beach on July 4, from 6 a.m. until midnight.

The Mylo McCormick Project will bring blues, funk and rock music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm, Thursday, June 21.

The Mylo McCormick Project is a four-piece band, led by singer-songwriter and musician Mylo McCormick who has also performed with Moz Motley Blues band. McCormick has earned a reputation as a masterful young guitarist with tasteful riffs and solos comparable to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He has performed funk and blues at venues around Lake Tahoe, the Comstock area and throughout Carson Valley.

The South Lake Tahoe Cancer League has a lot to be grateful for this past year. For nearly four decades, the volunteers of this organization have driven patients from South Lake Tahoe to their medical treatment, at no charge to the patients or their families. The drivers take patients to Reno, Carson City, Minden, Truckee, and as far away as UC Davis. The Cancer League also gives limited monetary assistance in the form of small grants to the patients to help with their monthly expenses.

The USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships will be held in Reno at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park January 9-14, 2018. The park will be transformed into a course that will see the nation’s leading amateur and professional cyclocross racers. Thirty-six national titles are on the line. National champions will be crowned in junior, collegiate, U23, masters, and elite divisions.

SPECIAL EVENT

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) will be closed to vehicle traffic in each direction around Emerald Bay from approximately 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 15 during the Lake Tahoe Marathon. EMERGENCY PROJECTS

Its not just a picnic basket bears have been after at the Bayview Trailhead this week. Some hikers have returned from the trail to find their cars not only broken into, but mauled.

Pictures on the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Twitter page have shown windows torn from their frames and the foam from seats pulled apart.

Bears want food, and if food, not matter how small of trace, is left in a car, they will go after it.

These break-ins are a good reminder to not leave food in cars, no matter if the door is locked or not.

Each year the Moose Lodge of South Lake Tahoe (Loyal Order of Moose #1632) hosts the Longest Day of Golf at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course to raise funds for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League and today they celebrated their effors, $9,462. Since 2006, golfers in the day long event have raised $125,328.82 for the non-profit to use towards transportation and grants for local cancer patients.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre festival schedule this summer is a full one and they've added a new event this summer, Evening Music on the Lawn.

The grand lawn at Valhalla has been a popular spot for Sunday afternoon concerts and now there will be two evening lawn concerts in 2017. Bring your lawn chairs and a picnic supper and enjoy some music, there will be a beer and wine garden too.

It was South Tahoe High Principal Chad Houck's last day on Friday, and the outpouring of support from teachers, staff, students and parents was evident.

For almost every morning for the past three years, Houck has greeted students being dropped off at the school, and Friday he was joined by others who carried pictures of the principal glued to a stick, "Chad on a Stick."

Parents got out of their cars, students stopped by for a handshake or hug and others called out their "goodbyes."

Something in the Wind, a free kite flying event, will take place at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21, 2017.

Weather and snow conditions permitting, Lake Tahoe recreational facilities will soon be open! The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) announced today they will begin opening some spots in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Inspiration Point will be the first site to open on April 15, 2017. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center opens May 19 and will be staffed weekends only until Memorial Day weekend. The Tallac Historic Site parking area opens May 1 and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 27.

A new project is being planned for the Town of Truckee that will include a 127 room hotel and five three-story apartment buildings with 138 rental units.

The hotel portion will be named Marriott SpringHill Suites and the apartments, Coburn Crossing.

The Triumph Development Hotel and Residential Project, will be laid out on over 11 acres adjacent to the Truckee Cemetery and Highway 80 on East Jiboom Street.

Celebrate the annual fall migration of the Kokanee salmon during the Fall Fish Fest at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, Lake Tahoe, Saturday and Sunday, October 1 & 2, 2016, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..

Join the fun and participate in this free family event which has become one of the most fascinating educational and wildlife viewing events in Northern California.

In celebration of the end of summer in South Lake Tahoe, the annual pyrotechnic extravaganza will explode over the lake at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 4.

The show features a simultaneous music broadcast that can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL - AM 1490.

Fireworks will be visible from many viewing areas around the South Show, but here are some of the sweet spots to get a front row seat:

If you're not a member already, you may join the morning of. In addition to all the awesome books, the very entertaining local band, "Mo' Betta Blues Band", will be playing on the library lawn from 11:00 until 2:00 PM. So bring a picnic, purchase some books and enjoy live music at the library with a view.

Location

The U.S. Forest Service is planning a project to restore the Taylor and Tallac creek ecosystems, an area that provides habitat for numerous protected wildlife speciesfas well as being an important hydrological connection to Lake Tahoe.

Named the Taylor and Tallac Restoration Project, the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will restore the large wetland complex where the two creeks were once connected through a series of four swales.

Public comment is sought on the Environmental Assessment, Initial Study and Initial Environmental Checklist.

Major components:

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and its Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers team are partnering with the Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee and other Lake Tahoe organizations to host community events and educational activities June 6-13. As visitors flock to the outdoor recreation wonderland that is Lake Tahoe the trails, beaches and forests are experiencing an increase in use and the associated impacts of trash, trail erosion and shoreline degradation.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work has resumed on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

The opening dates for recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin have been announced, with the first ones set to e ready April 30, 2016.

Kiva Picnic area, Baldwin and Nevada beaches, Big Meadow trailhead, the McKinney Rubicon Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) area and Sawmill Pond, Eagle Falls, Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor parking areas will open April 30, 2016.

The Tallac Historic Site opens April 30, 2016, and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 21, 2016 for Memorial Day weekend.

The Sandpit OHV area opens May 10, 2016.

As the Tahoe Paradise Park Improvement District celebrates their 50th anniversary, the district's board of directors, along with community volunteers, determined that it is time to create a master plan for the park which is located in the town of Meyers.

The draft master plan will be the subject of a community meeting on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the California Conservation Corps meeting room from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has been involving the community in several planning sessions, from the Tahoe Valley Area plan to the Recreation and Airport Master Plans. On Tuesday night, the latest plan for the Regan Beach area were unveiled to a group gathered at the South Lake Tahoe recreation center.

While attendance hasn't reflected a very large portion of the community, several dozen locals have played active roles at the meetings.
