South Lake Tahoe police alert public of Tier II sex offender

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is alerting the public to a registered sex offender in the area. Wesley Goetz is a Tier II Sex Offender out of Nevada, who lives in Incline Village.

He was convicted in 1998 for Felony Lewdness with a Child under 14, and is on lifetime supervision for his crimes. Goetz must adhere to several special conditions including staying away from areas / businesses which children frequent, and not accessing the Internet without permission.

Goetz is a registered sex offender on lifetime supervision, and isn't on active parole in the State of Nevada.

Attempted bank robbery at El Dorado Savings

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is requesting assistance from the public to help identify a suspect, who attempted to rob the El Dorado Savings Bank located at 3443 Lake Tahoe Blvd, in the Bijou Shopping Center, at about 3:30 this afternoon.

Update: More details on fatal plane crash in South Lake Tahoe

A single engine Mooney airplane crashed shortly after take off from the South Lake Tahoe airport at approximately 11:10 AM today.

The plane was observed by numerous witnesses begin to lose altitude after take off, and bank sharply into a wooded area east of the airport. The plane crashed into some large pine trees and flipped over.

The male pilot, Steven Lefton 67 years of age of Palo Alto, CA was killed on impact. His wife, Karen Lefton sustained moderate injuries and was pinned in the wreckage of the plane.

South Lake Tahoe man dies in stabbing, suspect remains at large

A 28-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was stabbed to death early Saturday morning and a suspect in the killing remains at large, South Lake Tahoe police say.

The incident began as a fight on Pioneer Trail near the Americana Village Suites and was reported to authorities at around 3:30 a.m., said Lt. Brian Williams of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. The victim, who was in a fight with the suspect and other men, was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital by family members and died from a stab wound to the torso area.

The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s.

Bank robber known as 'Fedora Bandit' sentenced to 9 years in prison

David Griffith Osborne, 75, known as the "Fedora Bandit" for his lengthy string of bank robberies in northern California, Lake Tahoe and at least one in Carson City, was sentenced Friday to nine years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for three counts of armed bank robbery, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

UPDATE: Missing Teen No Longer in the South Lake Tahoe Area

UPDATE: This afternoon (Friday, July 19, 2013) the South Lake Tahoe Police Department received word from the Mt. Pleasant Police Department in South Carolina that their investigation has confirmed Autumn Ellison has returned to South Carolina.

She has not yet been recovered. Nevertheless, South Carolina officials are confident she is no longer in our area. Investigators from South Carolina expressed their appreciation to our local media and public for their attention to this matter.

Bicyclist runs red light, crashes into skateboarder

On Wednesday, July 17 at around 8:30 p.m. South Lake Tahoe Police officers responded to the intersection of US Highway 50 with Heavenly Village Way to investigate an injury traffic collision.

Steven Magelssen, 20, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his bicycle southbound on US Highway 50 in the center left turn lane. He was approaching a red traffic signal at Heavenly Village Way. Pablo Bobadilla, 23, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his skateboard, and in the company of other pedestrians, while attempting to cross Highway 50 in a marked crosswalk.

South Lake Tahoe police reports recent surge in auto thefts, attempted thefts

During the nine days of July, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has investigated several thefts and attempted thefts of vehicles in the City. The targeted victim vehicles appear to be vans in particular.

As we do each year, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department bolstered our patrol staffing to meet the emergency response needs of our crowded City during the Independence Day celebration.

There were squads of officers patrolling the beaches, assigned to traffic duties and extra officers assigned to work a variety of areas throughout the City. Although the City was quite full with holiday revelers, the number of calls for emergency police responses was fewer this year than during many past years.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reports the 2013, 4th of July celebration in Douglas County and around Lake Tahoe went well.

The celebratory crowds in the Stateline, Round Hill and Zephyr Cove areas of Lake Tahoe were large and with exception of a few altercations in the downtown Casino Core area, Nevada Beach and Zephyr Cove Beach, the crowd was relatively well behaved. Motorists were cooperative with the road closures and traffic control required for the fireworks display.

NHP conducts holiday DUI checkpoint near Lake Tahoe in Douglas County

Several northern Nevada law enforcement agencies will be teaming up and “Joining Forces” this Independence Day as an additional security measure in providing for a safe holiday weekend.

Missing elderly South Lake Tahoe man found in Reno

An elderly man missing who went missing in South Lake Tahoe last week was found Monday morning in Reno, KTVN Channel 2 in Reno reports.

Norman Lambert, 74, was found Monday morning at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, authorities said.

South Lake Tahoe police seek help locating elderly man

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing elderly man who may be suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia.

On Friday South Lake Tahoe Police officers were dispatched to an apartment complex at 3421 Spruce Ave., in reference to a call involving Norman Gary Lambert, 74, said SLTPD Sgt. Shannon Laney.

When officers arrived at the Lambert's residence where he lives along, he was gone. There was no evidence of any crime and apartment management, staff and witnesses report Lamber has appeared to be confused and disoriented, said Laney.

South Lake Tahoe police officer Poland pleads guilty to witness tampering, obstruction

John Gerald Poland, 44, of South Lake Tahoe, pleaded guilty Wednesday by a federal grand jury for multiple counts of witness tampering and obstruction of an official proceeding, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

This case is the product of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, and the State of California Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (SLEDNET Task Force). Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez is prosecuting the case.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department Annual Awards Ceremony

In honor of Peace Officer Memorial Week, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department honored officers, dispatch and citizens during its Annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 15, 2013.

The second session of the City of South Lake Tahoe’s Citizens Academy graduated today during today’s city council meeting.

S. Tahoe police officer expected to plead guilty

South Lake Tahoe police Officer Johnny Poland is expected to plead guilty next week to federal charges. “They said in court that they needed a week for negotiations,” Lauren Horwood with the U.S. Attorney’s Office told Lake Tahoe News after the May 15 hearing in Sacramento. “Another hearing is set for May 22 for entry of a guilty plea.”

SLTPD to honor citizen who played critical role in 2012 DUI bike-vehicle accident

One of the people to be honored this week at the annual South Lake Tahoe police awards ceremony is the man who was instrumental in helping save the life of Adam Rose and apprehend Christine Whalen. Drug take-back nets 61 pounds of prescription meds

On April 27 the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration provided the public its sixth opportunity in three years to take back unwanted prescription drugs and collected 61 pounds of prescription medication in South Lake Tahoe, which is the most collected in South Lake Tahoe since this program was started.

In Sacramento, the DEA announced it disposed of 17,741 pounds of unwanted prescription medication, up from last year’s weight of 9,952 pounds.

Police investigate possible link between Placerville kidnapping, Calaveras slaying

Placerville police are investigating a possible link between an alleged kidnapping in the city Tuesday morning and Saturday's fatal stabbing of a an 8-year-old girl in Calaveras County.

"We have no confirmed nexus to the Calaveras County case," said Placerville police Capt. Mike Scott. But he said Placerville officers have been in communication with Calaveras County law enforcement officials following the arrest of 44-year-old Jason Wayrynen. Scott said a DNA sample also has been collected from Wayrynen.

Brotherhood motorcycle member arrested for felony weapons, assault crimes, drug paraphernalia

On Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013 the SLTPD SWAT team executed high risk search and arrest warrants at 2493 William Avenue, and took 46-year-old Anthony Corbin into custody for several felonies.

Anthony Corbin is a confirmed member of the South Lake Tahoe Brotherhood Motorcycle Club. In mid-March Corbin was identified as the suspect who severely beat a 34-year-old South Lake Tahoe man.

Armed South Lake Tahoe man arrested after allegedly strangling mother

A 21-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Wednesday and faces felony battery and resisting charges after allegedly strangling his mother until she was unconscious and then eluding police on a bicycle, authorities said.

Skylor Klisch was arrested after South Lake Tahoe police officers caught up with him during a chase in which the man was peddling a bicycle near Lake Tahoe Boulevard. He was found to be in possession of a 22-caliber hand gun with ammunition. The battery happened on Tahoe Island Drive at around 6:30 a.m.

Gangs, drugs, the threat of violence at schools, parents who are not engaged, and a crime rate that is increasing. Those were some of the topics South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler, El Dorado County sheriff’s Lt. United Way partners with grants to help Lake Tahoe area agencies

Several Lake Tahoe area nonprofit organizations and agencies will receive financial aid this year through partnerships announced Monday by the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

The partnerships are aimed to address issues identified in each of the Lake Tahoe area communities, said Karen Barsell, CEO and president of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

Three sought in South Lake Tahoe motel robbery

South Lake Tahoe police are investigating an armed robbery at the Pinewood Lodge that happened late Saturday night.

Three are being sought by police after a woman and two men wearing ski masks robbed the motel at gunpoint, said South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Shannon Laney. It happened at about 11:30 p.m. The suspects, described as a black female and two black males, were armed with a black semi-automatic handgun and a hunting knife. The trio escaped in a Cadillac.

Police sketches past time of South Shore Lake Tahoe firefighter

In a world of aerial drones, stun guns and surveillance cameras, an electric eraser doesn’t seem like much of a crime-fighting tool.

For Leona Allen, a spokeswoman for Lake Valley Fire Protection District and certified composite sketch artist, the handheld device is a cherished part of a crime-fighting kit that includes pencils, a blending stump and a sketch pad.

South Lake Tahoe man admits to Sunday burglary at South Shore Bikes

South Lake Tahoe police arrested a man following a burglary Sunday of South Shore Bikes on Emerald Bay Road.
Lee Sparks, 34, was arrested early Monday at Barton Memorial Hospital and admitted to the burglary and taking a bike, South Lake Tahoe police report.

Sparks was at the hospital being treated for cuts to his arms. Blood was found at the business where officers noted Sparks allegedly had forced entry into the shop through a roof event and exited through a window.

Police: South Lake Tahoe man confesses to El Dorado Savings Bank robbery

A 29-year-old South Lake Tahoe man has confessed to the March 7 robbery of El Dorado Savings Bank, South Lake Tahoe police confirm.

Paul Cortez was arrested by Reno police and booked into Washoe County Jail where he will be transferred to South Lake Tahoe and booked into El Dorado County Jail. Police say he confessed to details about the robbery and how much money was taken.

One in custody following high-speed chase

Law enforcement officers have one person in custody following a high-speed chase of a black Chevrolet Malibu that led police from California to Nevada and reached speeds between 90 and 100 mph.

The chase started about 9:55 a.m. near the agricultural station in Meyers.

South Lake Tahoe police have released a composite sketch of a suspect wanted for the March 7 robbery of El Dorado Savings Bank, 3443 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Father and two sons injured when SUV crashes into South Lake Tahoe Denny's

A South Lake Tahoe father and two sons were injured Thursday morning after the SUV they were in crashed Denny's restaurant on Al Tahoe Boulevard, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department reports.

Todd Jackson, 28, suffered moderate injuries in the 8:50 a.m. accident after being extricated from the 2002 Dodge Durango by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department. He was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno. Jackson's two sons, 11 and 8-years-old, were taken to Barton Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released for minor injuries.

Police look for man who robbed South Lake Tahoe bank

South Lake Tahoe police are looking for a man who robbed the El Dorado Savings Bank in the 3400 block of Lake Tahoe Boulevard Thursday at around 2 p.m.
The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s, with a black hoodie and snow googles. He is described as being slight to average build with scruffy facial fair and a black patch of hair on his left cheek, similar to a mole. He was wearing blue pants, black jacket with leather sleeves, similar to a letterman's jacket, South Lake Tahoe police report. No weapon was seen.

A 51-year-old South Lake Tahoe man died Friday after an alleged drunk driver with a suspended license for DUI hit him with his vehicle on Lake Tahoe Boulevard. The victim was found unconscious and taken to Barton Memorial Hospital where he died. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.
Gregory Stearns, 49, was arrested and faces a DUI charge that involved death and driving under a suspended license for a previous DUI where he was convicted.
