STHS tackle Logan Langemeier headed to Jacksonville University

South Tahoe High offensive tackle Logan Langemeier will be wearing the green and white of the Jacksonville University Dolphins football team this fall.

During an official signing ceremony at the school Wednesday, the 6'4" 240 pound senior credited his mom and his training for getting him to this point.

A football player since the age of eight, Logan said he tried soccer but fell in love with football through Pop Warner.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows have 100% renewable energy goal in 2018

To help achieve Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows’ goal to be powered by 100 percent clean, renewable energy sources, Liberty Utilities, the electric service provider in the Lake Tahoe region of California, is actively collaborating with resort leadership to identify and develop new renewable energy generation, storage and energy efficiency projects to benefit the Olympic Valley and surrounding areas. Subject to regulatory approval, the two companies intend to achieve the resort’s 100 percent renewable goal as early as December 2018.

Customers weigh in on Liberty Utilities in survey

The cumulative results of Liberty Utilities’ quarterly Customer Satisfaction Surveys in 2017 show improvements in corporate citizenship and communications. The survey also showed overall customer satisfaction increased by six points compared to first quarter results.

The online survey is independently conducted by JD Power, and Liberty Utilities’ results are compared with comparable electric utilities in the west. Some highlights of the 2017 survey results show:

Almost one year ago almost five million women, men and children gathered around the world to participate in the Women's March on Washington on the same day President Trump was being inaugurated.

They gathered to stand together in their protest of reproductive rights, equal pay, safety for women in the workplace and more. They stood against racism, sexism, sexual assault and harassment. They stood against Trump and his policies that were racist, anti-LGBT and anti-women.

Mac the Naw: Topaz opener brings lots of catches, large mackinaws being caught at Tahoe

Hello fellow anglers, welcome to the new year and may it bring you tighter lines. I can truly say the Topaz Lake fishing derby is off to a very good start.

On opening day they were plenty of anglers enjoying a fair weather day, where it be from shore or from boat. Most anglers were very successful. I had the pleasure of fishing with Mike and Tom Blotter. We were on the lake at 6 a.m. and had lines in the water right at the precise moment of opening day. We covered the lake in a variety of depths.

Over 2,000 NV Energy customers without power on South Shore

5:45 p.m. UPDATE - 15 customers are still without power at this time. NV Energy estimates they'll be restored by 8:00 p.m. tonight.

NV Energy is reporting that 2,434 of their customers on the South Shore have been without power since 2:27 p.m. Thursday. Equipment failure is being cited as the cause and estimated restoration of all power is expected by 5:30 p.m.

Power outage hits South Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley

UPDATE: 1:00 a.m. 12/17/17 - NV Energy has restored power to their customers. It is unknown at this time what caused the four-hour long outage.

NV Energy is reporting a few power outages to their customers starting at 8:45 p.m. Saturday. At the lake, 4,385 customers are affected, with another 3,300 in the Carson Valley. NV Energy states the problem is from equipment failure and they expect to have power restored by 10:00 p.m.

City wants citizens to be prepared for high winds and cold temperatures

The week ahead in South Lake Tahoe will be a clear one, but very cold as a strong high pressure system builds over the Sierra causing prolonged periods of strong morning inversions.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a wind advisory for Lake Tahoe from 1:00 p.m. Monday to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. Winds will be from the East 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Over the ridges will be as high as 80 mph.

Power back on after downed line repaired in South Lake Tahoe

10:55 a.m. update: Crews have fixed the primary wire that went down in the Angora Creek area Thursday morning. At first restoration was estimated at by 2:30 p.m. It is unknown how the wire came down.

Crews from Liberty Utilities are on their way to the US50 and Angora Creek area due to customers reporting partial, or no power.

The affected area includes Dixie Mountain Rd, Pyramid Court and Circle, Mt. Shasta Circle and Snow Mountain.

Fundraiser at Flight Deck to benefit Sierra Avalanche Center

Flight Deck Sports Bar and Grill at the Lake Tahoe Airport is holding a Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC) fundraiser on Friday, December 1 starting at 6:00 p.m. There will be music by Cash Only Band's Davin & Dallas, raffle prizes, and the showing of a movie and short films, all for $10.

"Boondockers Fourteen," a snowmobile movie, will be shown along with short films by local Ty Dayberry and Bird Flu Crew, and a snowmobile avalanche awareness movie, "Knowledge is Power."

There will be food and drink specials all night long as well.

Backcountry skiers trigger avalanche near Mt. Rose

Three skiers in the Hourglass Bowl area on Tamarack Peak near Mt. Rose triggered a 600 foot long avalanche around 10:45 a.m. Thursday. Nobody was seriously injured though two of the party were slammed into trees and rocks according to the Sierra Avalanche Center.

Heavy new snow was falling rapidly at the time. The avalanche was about three feet deep and 200 feet wide.

A group of 4 or 5 were skiing in the area, with three of them involved in the slide. Two of the skiers lost their skis and another had a possible broken ankle.

Storm causing power outages around Lake Tahoe

11:20PM Update: The power outages, which occurred at 10:01 p.m. still affect over 14,000 customers of NV Energy. The estimated time of restoration is 12:45 a.m. Thursday.

Many NV Energy customers in Incline Village, much of the Douglas County portion at Lake Tahoe and Carson City are currently without power. 14,207 homes and businesses are affected.

A winter storm is currently passing through the Sierra with high winds and rain at lake level, gusts over 100 mph and heavy snow over the passes. The winter storm warning is in effect until 4:00 a.m. Friday, November 17.

Work completed on new transformer for North Shore

The Brockway substation in Kings Beach was switched back into service Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m. The 50+ year old substation had been temporarily shut down for necessary repairs due to damage sustained during this year’s winter storms.

A new transformer was installed to replace equipment that had caught on fire during extreme weather experienced in the Lake Tahoe region in January and February "Snowmegeddon."

Winter storm watch and wind advisories up for Lake Tahoe this week

Two storm systems heading for Lake Tahoe this week will impact the region with gusty winds, rain, snow and cooler temperatures.

10,000 without power in Kings Beach and Incline Village

There has been a power outage in the Kings Beach and Incline Village areas due to a NV Energy equipment failure in Incline Village. Liberty Utilities customers were getting a feed from NV Energy as thire Brockway Substation has been down for repairs in preparation for winter.

8.839 business and residential customers in Incline Village are without power, and an additional 1,593 in Kings Beach.

Initially they expected the power to be down until 4:00 a.m. Friday, but Liberty is hoping for power to be back to NV Energy by 11:00 p.m., allowing them to bring all customers back online.

Lake wind advisory as next storm moves into Lake Tahoe Basin

The Sierra is at average precipitation for this date, below last year's epic winter at this time, but its still early. Will a storm system heading to Lake Tahoe be enough to put those totals higher?

Probably not this storm. It brings with it strong winds but not much snow or rain.

Wendy Shehadi 1941-2017

Former South Lake Tahoe resident Wendy Shehadi passed away on October 19 2017 at the age of 76 in Las Vegas. Wendy is survived by her husband Dick; sons Mark and Scott; guardian son Mike Cokeron; grandsons Michael and Ryan Shehadi; brother Dr. Richard Rupp; sister in law Louise Rupp; brother in law Michael Shehadi; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Some Christmas Valley residents to be without power Tuesday

There is a planned power outage in the Christmas Valley area along Grass Lake Road and Grass Lake Way for Tuesday, October 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Crews from Liberty Utilities need to replace a damaged pole.

Approximately 20 customers will be affected and they have been notified.

Power out to parts of South Lake Tahoe after car hits power pole

Power is out to residents in the Gardner Mountain and Boulder Mountain Court area Saturday morning. Crews from Liberty Utilities have responded and expect to have power restored within the hour.

Complete details are not yet available but early reports say a car hit a power pole. Liberty Utilities responded shortly after 8:00 a.m.

Teen accused of killing family moved out of juvenile system in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been almost two years since Nolen Buchanan of Benicia, California first appeared in a Placerville courtroom as a 16-year-old, charged with the killing of his family in their El Dorado County vacation home and then setting it on fire.

The charred remains of Buchanan's father Adam, 38, his father's fiancée Molly McAffe, 37, and his 8-year-old brother, Gavin, were found in that Greenwood cabin on September 13, 2015.

Since that time, Nolen has been in the Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) in South Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Arts Project bringing physical theater to the local stage

In their 31st year of bringing arts to the South Shore, Tahoe Arts Project starts their new season by presenting Push Physical Theater on Friday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Harrah’s South Shore Room. Power out to parts of South Lake Tahoe

UPDATE 10:45AM: Power has been restored to all South Lake Tahoe area customers of Liberty Utilities. The cause of the outage is still unknown.

Power went out to almost 4,000 Liberty Utilities customers in South Lake Tahoe at 9:10 a.m. Friday. There is a locked out circuit at the Meyers substation.

Crews are at the scene trying to get power back on.

As of 10:00 a.m., power was restored to some people, but 2,206 customers are still without power.

There is no estimated restoration time.

Power restored in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline

UPDATE 4:30PM - All repairs have been made and power has been restored to the South Lake Tahoe/Stateline area.

Crews on site estimate it will be six hours until repairs will be completed though some customers may come back on line sooner with attempted switching.

Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake burns 9,061 acres and remains 20% contained

UPDATE 9/3 9:00pm - 9,051 acres have now burned in the Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake. It remains at 20 percent contained.

UPDATE 9/2 2:45PM - The Slinkard Fire is burning in three counties and two states: Mono, Alpine and Douglas County in California and Nevada. It has consumed 7,881 acres since starting by lightning on August 29. Firefighters now have a containment line around 20 percent of the fire. It is located in Slinkard Valley, and on the west slope of Antelope Valley, west of Topaz Lake and eight miles north of Walker, Calif.

Slinkard Fire road closure update: Highways 395 and 208 affected

UPDATE 3:30PM - Residents with proper identification will be allowed to pass through closed highway areas in Topaz Estates and north of the fire. School buses will be running as normal for Thursday afternoon.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and California Hwy Patrol are working traffic control for the Slinkard Fire in Topaz near the Nevada and California state line.

North of the fire, Hwy 395 is closed in both directions at Leviathan Mine Road, which is south of Gardnerville, Nevada.

South of the fire, Hwy 395 is closed in both directions at Hwy 182 in Bridgeport, Calif.

Fire near town of Topaz closes highways, evacuations in place

UPDATE 8/31 10:00AM - The Slinkard Fire has grown to 5,000 acres with 0 percent containment this morning. The fire has burned to Hwy 395 and crossed Hwy 89 to the north.

Last night, fire crews focused on the eastern flank of the fire along Hwy 395 and engine crews were dedicated to structure protection in northern Topaz. There are no injuries and no structures lost at this time. Power is out in the immediate area.

Car runs over power box in Tahoe Keys; Liberty Utilities working on restoring power

Power is out to Liberty Utilities customers along Venice Drive in the Tahoe Keys Monday evening after a vehicle drove over a power box near the bridge.

As of 8:19 p.m., power is estimated to be up by midnight.

No other details are available at this time.

Wellness Outings: A prescription for “Nature as Medicine”

South Lake Tahoe, CA – Recovering from a major joint surgery doesn’t usually inspire the idea of snowshoeing by moonlight, but that’s exactly what Carol Bennis, age 75, was asked to do during her recovery last February.

Carol had never been on snowshoes before, or hiked at night, but when she heard her surgeon and other patients at a similar stage of recovery would be there, she decided to try it out.

South Lake Tahoe joins others to reduce electrical use during eclipse

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will pass over the Pacific Northwest affecting the California solar resources supplying power to the grid. During the eclipse from 9:02 a.m. to 11:54 a.m., the moon will obscure much of the solar rays directly affecting the output of both large scale photovoltaic (PV) electric power plants and rooftop solar. A loss of 4,194 megawatts(MW) of California large scale solar electricity is expected.

El Dorado County Supervisors respond to judge's ruling on Measure E

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors today issued the following statement

SLTFR responds to call of fire at Al Tahoe home

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to the call of a structure fire on the corner of Nevada Avenue and Tallac Avenue Monday night.

Upon arrival they found that the owner of the home had been working on the water heater. The expansion foam used on the project has volatile fumes that ignited according to SLTFR Battalion Chief Tim Spencer.

Power and gas was shut off to the single story structure as firefighters went through the home and examined the duct work to make sure no fire went into the crawl space.

Expect delays on Kingsbury Grade Tuesday as trees removed

Motorists traveling on Kingsbury Grade between Daggett Pass and Highway 50 can expect delays on Tuesday, July 18 as crews from NV Energy removes two large trees.

Single lane closures with a traffic flagger alternating traffic will be in place on between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. near Buchanan Road.

The trees are encroaching near power lines and need to be removed.

Phone scam hitting Liberty Utilities customers; Crooks take at least $2,500 from victims

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three Liberty Utilities customers have fallen victim to aggressive phone scams over the last two days taking at least $2,500 from the victims.

In each case the crooks pose as a Liberty Utilities collections representative who threatens to shut off their power if payment was not made within a specified period of time. Sometimes the caller has specific customer information such as last payment amount; Liberty is unaware of how this information has been obtained.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "Don't be afraid of doing things different and don't be afraid of the outside world," Olympic Gold Medalist and South Shore native Jamie Anderson told those gathered on the soccer field on the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) campus Friday night as she delivered the school's commencement keynote address. "Lead the life you're stoked for."

"Follow Your Dreams" was the theme of the evening as hundreds of family members, faculty, friends and community members watched the LTCC Class of 2017 graduate.
