Ground breaks on final Harrison Avenue phase and Champions Plaza
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/02/2014 - 10:40pmIf you haven't been by Harrison Avenue lately you'll find some big changes. Landscaping has gone in, one way streets are in place, there are more walking and biking areas and stores are being updated to reflect the new look.
The final phase of this year's project is the parking lot at the north end across from Lakeview Commons. And after the City Council's unanimous vote at Tuesday's meeting, the corner will also be Champion's Plaza.
As a permanent landmark to honor Lake Tahoe's past, current and future National and Olympic champions.
How it will look is what isn't known.

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will hold an open house on Thursday, September 18, 2014, to explain and answer questions about its draft analysis of a proposal from Heavenly Mountain Resort. The resort has a 40 year lease to operate on national forest lands and now wants to expand year-round, non-skiing activities at the Lake Tahoe resort.
Camp Richardson Corral seeks reissue of 20 year permit
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/22/2014 - 10:11pmThe Camp Richardson Corral operates under a U.S. Forest Service Special Use Permit that is up for renewal. As part of the process, the USFS has opened a month long period for comments from the public.
They are asking for input on a proposal to reissue the corral a 20 year special use permit for the operation and maintenance of the corral and outfitting and guiding services.
BMPs Back in the Forefront With TRPA; May Be Part of Lake Tahoe Real Estate Transactions

The proposal being currently discussed is to make BMPs mandatory at Point of Sale for a home as well as discussion of them during the transaction's disclosure process. This discussion at the TRPA BMP Compliance Worksing Group meeting Tuesday brought a packed house of mostly Lake Tahoe real estate agents and brokers.
Forest Service Wants Public Input on Incline Dam Project
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/10/2014 - 10:30pmThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is seeking public input on a proposal to remove the Incline Lake dam and restore the area impacted by it. The Forest Service purchased the 777-acre Incline Lake parcel, located off State Route 431 in Washoe County, Nev., on July 29, 2008, for its recreational, scenic and natural resource values. During the acquisition process, a site investigation and assessment determined that the Incline Lake dam and spillway do not meet federal, state or local standards for a high-hazard dam (designated as such due to downstream development).
Absentee Ballots Being Mailed Out by El Dorado County Today

Forest Service Looking for Comments on Plan to Keep Bears Out of Campground Trash
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/30/2014 - 9:54pmThere is a proposed "Forest Order" that would require proper storage of food and refuse at developed National Forest System recreation sites in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Bears are attracted to anything edible or scented. Improper storage of human food sources and refuse is a leading cause of human-bear conflict. Without a Forest Order in place, Forest Service law enforcement are unable to require visitors to employ proper food and refuse storage practices. The proposed Forest Order would require use of bear-resistant dumpsters and food lockers designed to prevent access by wildlife.
Community Workshop on Meyers Area Plan to be Held Wednesday

Residents of Meyers and the surrounding South Lake Tahoe community have been actively participating in what is called the "Meyers Area Plan." During the last community meeting on February 26 several concerned citizens spoke about what they wanted, and didn't want, to see their in their town.
El Dorado County officials took the numerous public comments made both at the meeting and on-line and have created potential revisions to the Draft Meyers Area Plan.
Hugelkultur Planned for South Lake Tahoe Community Garden

This word may not be in everyone's vocabulary (yet) but residents in South Lake Tahoe will soon be seeing this demonstrated if the community garden at Bijou Park is approved by the City Council.
Heavenly's Proposal for Year Round, Non-Skiing Activities Under Review by Forest Service

Heavenly's plan is to create a summer experience for guests with the addition of zipline and skycycle canopy tours, a mountain bike park, a ropes course, water activities, hiking trails,mountain excursion tours and nature interpretation.
Round Hill Pines Scheduled to Change Operators at End of 2013
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/15/2013 - 5:13pmBob and Tammy Hassett, current operators of Camp Richardson and Meeks Bay Resort have been selected to run the concession at Round Hill Pines Resort according to Cheva Heck of the U.S. Forest Service. The current lease is held by the Forvilly family and is set to expire on December 31, 2013. Frank Forvilly has operated Round Hill Pines since 1971 and just found out yesterday that they weren't awarded the new contract.

Forest Service seeks comment on proposed Homewood special use permit

The permit would allow Homewood to continue to provide downhill skiing and snowboarding opportunities on the recently acquired Quail Lake parcel.
The Forest Service purchased the Quail Lake parcel from Homewood Mountain Resort in 2009. Prior to the purchase, the parcel was used for skiing and snowboarding along with Homewood’s grooming operation.
California, Nevada governors agree to preserve Lake Tahoe Compact, renew commitment from both states

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and Calif. Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced Tuesday an agreement that renews the partnership, which has been under threat of repeal.
El Dorado County awards $2.6 million contract to Maine-based Tyler Technologies
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 03/26/2013 - 5:20pmThe El Dorado County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday awarded a $2.6 million contract to Yarmouth, Maine-based Tyler Technologies to replace its current financial, payroll and human resources systems.
Eleven companies proposed bids and the county spent 18 months researching those bids, according to a news release. The money for the contract will come from the county's reserve for capital projects. Supervisors also OK'd $3 million to hire additional staff to assist with implementation and conversion of the project.

Public comments are being taken until Oct. 1 for the proposed changes, which could get off the ground next year.

Conservation group seals deal to buy Royal Gorge

The agreement is a big change for a property that, as recently as 2007, had been slated for major resort development. That proposal stalled in the face of overwhelming opposition and an unfavorable economic climate – opening the way for conservationists to buy the land when the bank foreclosed on the loan.
Proposed Lake Tahoe regulations raises environmental concerns

Alex Leff, with the conservation organization Friends of the West Shore, says the main draft plan would allow significant commercial development on recreational land, which makes up 22 percent of Lake Tahoe's Basin.
