Opportunities This Week to Get Connected in South Lake Tahoe

The City of South Lake Tahoe has two opportunities for locals to become involved in their community!

First on tap is Tuesday's night South Lake Tahoe Neighborhood Team Meeting at the SLT Recreation Center, located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Neighborhood Service Team program serves to improve and preserve neighborhood vitality by fostering public participation and facilitating interaction between residents and your City government.

All residents within City limits are welcome to attend, regardless of which neighborhood you reside.

World Book Night Shares the Love of Reading in South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe community was treated to 320 free books on Wednesday night as part of World Book Night.

Volunteers from Friends of the Library gave books out at beaches, bus stops, the El Dorado County Food Bank truck, recreation center, Senior Center, Juvenile Treatment Center, Tahoe Senior Plaza and various other places around town. They announced on Facebook that they were heading out, but didn't disclose locations until after the books were distributed.

"We enjoyed reaching out to others in our community by sharing a special book," said volunteer Lynne Brosch.

Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show This Weekend

The Third Annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will take place at the Recreation Center, 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd., in South Lake Tahoe, CA, this weekend. The popular event will be open 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Friday, April 25th,and from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 26, 2014. Admission is free to the public.

South Lake Tahoe Residents Have Many Upcoming Opportunities to be Involved in the Future of the City

The City of South Lake Tahoe is encouraging residents to be informed and engaged in the community and is offering several opportunities in the coming weeks to do just that.

"In an engaged community, every person has the information, the opportunities and the support needed to take action and lead change throughout their lives," according to the Knight Foundation. "When people become involved, and exercise their full democratic rights, they make their lives and those of others better."

It takes a Community to Make a Difference and What a Difference a Year Makes

As 2013 draws to a close, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of many this year. It was just a few short years ago, in the midst of the Great Recession, both public agencies and private companies throughout the basin were in the middle of layoffs, service reductions and unemployment hovering above 17%. Concerns regarding economic recovery were significant. Rather than buckling under, we buckled down, got things done and prepared for recovery.

City Council Makes MoveTowards Increasing Recreation Area in South Lake Tahoe

You may have noticed all of the blue snow plows at their home next to the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center, Ice Arena and Campground on Rufus Allen Boulevard. During the last city council meeting there was a unanimous vote to move the current Public Works Streets Division yard (that houses the snow plows) to a new home on the corner of D Street and Shop Street. The council voted to spend just under $400,000 on the purchase, thus paving the way to further expand the work on the 56 acre project.

Community Carnival

A Community Carnival will be help on Saturday, September 14 at the Recreation Center from 10 am to 4 pm. There will be live music, a pirate race, a cake walk, rocket launch, limbo contest and more. The carnival is hosted by Gerri Grego, a candidate for El Dorado County Supervisor.

Free admission, tickets for games are .75 each.

Live at Lakeview: Free Summer Concert Series Featuring Vokab Kompany

July recognized in South Lake Tahoe as 'Parks Make Life Better' month with photo contest

Center for Spiritual Development classes begin

New classes will begin at the Center for Spiritual Development in South Lake Tahoe. Marty and Amrito Cross are back on an every week schedule (our own level class at FSD is now on Wednesdays, so no need to alternate).

Level 1, Level 2 classes and free healing circle start again on Tuesday, May 14. See details below. Level 4 is on-going on Thursdays. Please let us know what you plan to attend. Spirit Coaching is also available to fit your schedule (6-month minimum commitment).

South Lake Tahoe Rec Center offers Valentine’s Day Parent’s Night Out

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center will host a special Kids Night Out for Valentine’s Day on Thursday, Feb. 14 from 6-10 pm. The $25 registration includes: swimming, pizza, movie (G or PG), games, Valentine fun and crafts. Children can be dropped-off from 6-7:30 pm. Parents must pre-register and space is limited.

Turkey Trot 2012 at the Community Recreation Center

Get into the holidays with fitness in mind with Turkey Trot 2012 at the South Lake Tahoe Community Recreation Center. The event is hosted by the Tahoe Mountain Milers, South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club and the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Department. Sign up at 10am.
Races held snow, rain or shine! Race distances range from 25 yards for the kids to 2.8 miles for the adults. Youth races begin at 11am and adult race begins at noon. Winners in each division win a turkey. Second and third places receive pumpkin pies.

As demand soars, Christmas Cheer makes plea for help

The Great Recession continues to rear its head here at home, with demands on social services soaring and a genuine fear that South Shore’s food bank won’t be able to provide Christmas dinner for a record number of families in need.
For 30 years, the Christmas Cheer food bank has helped families celebrate Christmas with a traditional dinner of turkey and all the trimmings. However, with 800 families expected to be on the list of those to receive a dinner, the charity has only 75 donated turkeys and five hams to give and organizers say they are beyond being nervous.

More city services on the chopping block; budget meeting Thursday

A special meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council to discuss the 2011-12 budget will be held this Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7pm. Not only is this the first look the public will have at the proposed budget, but this may be the only opportunity for public input before layoffs in crucial departments like streets and recreation. The regular council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m.
