Independence Day has a long tradition of bringing family and friends together from near and far to enjoy many of the things that make us uniquely American. our civic duties. In these times of pandemic, perhaps our most important civic duty is to ensure the health and safety and wellbeing of ourselves, our families and our community.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The 31st annual American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe next week will still bring over 70 celebrities to the greens of Edgewood Tahoe, but this year spectators will be absent from both the beach and the course.

The tournament will be held July 8-12 and Patrick Mahomes, Tony Romo, Jerry Rice, Steph Curry and his dad Dell Curry, and a host of others from the entertainment, sports, and broadcasting fields will be in Lake Tahoe for the annual event.

Austin Angell’s 46th annual Ponderosa Ridge Run will be held Saturday, July 4, 2020, at 10:00 a.m.

The popular event will start at the Spooner Summit Maintenance Station located near the intersection of US50/SR28 on the east side of the summit. The 9.5-mile hilly course is on a non-paved fire road featuring a 2,000-foot elevation gain in the first four miles with scenic views along the Tahoe Rim Trail, and a downhill finish near the end of North Benjamin off Kingsbury Grade (SR207).

Transportation is not provided back to the start area.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - It will be different at the American Century Championship at Edgewood next week with no fans allowed, but what won't be different is the philanthropic focus of the tournament.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - New critical health and safety measures are now in place at Incline Beach, Burnt Cedar Beach, Ski Beach, and Hermit Beach. There are now limitations on access and restrictions on group picnic use.

An emergency resolution was passed by the Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID) Board of Trustees to outline the new measures as laid out in their Resolution 1881. They are also enhancing their communication process to expeditiously inform the public regarding ongoing restrictions.

STATELINE, Nev. - Harrah's Tahoe, Harveys, and all other Caesars Entertainment properties now require masks to be worn by everyone indoors at its properties across the Caesars network. This includes all employees, vendors, contractors, guests, and passersby in their properties.

In a statement today, Caesars Entertainment said the new universal mask requirement began at noon on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. Masks are not required when eating and guests will be allowed to smoke or drink by moving the mask, then recovering their mouth and nose when done.

STATELINE, Nev. - Harveys Lake Tahoe announced Monday that they will be resume their operations as a hotel and casino on Tuesday, June 30 at 10:00 a.m.

Upon reopening, the property will comply with directives from Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak, the Nevada Gaming Control Board, and public health authorities. Subject to and in accordance with such directives, other amenities on-property, including ticketed live events, will reopen as appropriate based on customer demand.

Across the street, Harrah's Tahoe opened along with the other Stateline casinos on June 4.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The next phase of watercraft inspections will begin next week, Lake Tahoe water agencies announced Friday. From June 26 - July 1, and again starting July 6, inspections for the prevention of aquatic invasive species (AIS) will be available by appointment only.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Washoe County deputies on board Marine 9 found a couple clinging to a deflated raft on Lake Tahoe around 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18.

Deputies aboard the boat were patrolling just northwest of the Thunderbird Lodge on the east shore when they spotted a number of items, including paddles and shoes, floating on the lake.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County public health officials are reporting another four confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county, all from the Lake Tahoe region.

All of the new cases are in the age group of 18-49 and are three males and one female. This brings the current number of confirmed cases to 125. With one new recovery, the active number of cases is 25.

There are no current hospitalizations but two suspected cases of COVID-19 are in the hospital.

229 more people have been tested, bringing that total to 8,669.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As California reaches over 5,000 deaths, Governor Newsom announced Thursday that almost everyone in the state will now be required to wear face masks in public.

“Science shows that face coverings and masks work,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “They are critical to keeping those who are around you safe, keeping businesses open, and restarting our economy.”

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In response to Governor Sisolak’s announcement of the State entering Phase 2 of COVID-19 recovery, Douglas County Community Services has announced the reopening of child care programming, Lake Day Camp, at Kahle Community Center starting on Tuesday June 23, 2020.

Procedures will be implemented at the Kahle Community Center as outlined below based on Directive 21 – Roadmap to Recovery for Nevada for Phase 2.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Law enforcement has come a long way in South Lake Tahoe since the first police department started on July 1, 1967. At that time there were 30 sworn male officers who were chosen from a list of more than 400 applicants who wanted to be part of the first police department for the new city. They were tested in Seal Beach, Roseville, and South Lake Tahoe then interviewed in Los Angeles and Sacramento.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On June 12, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) concessionaires will begin opening developed campgrounds in the Lake Tahoe Basin. They are joined by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest who is opening all of its campgrounds in California.

Nevada group campsites and day-use areas that hold less than 50 people will also reopen. Visitor centers and California group campsites remain closed. Both the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and LTBMU offices remain closed.

The year 2020 started out with the driest February on record in California since the 1850s, and this combined with warming temperatures and recent winds are resulting in quickly drying grass.

Counites that have approved attestations like El Dorado County can open those sectors once they have developed and implemented their safety plans on June 12.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The second virtual Town Hall meeting focusing on vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the El Dorado County portion of Lake Tahoe will be held on Wednesday, June 10 at 4:00 p.m. on Zoom.

Led by District 5 Supervisor Sue Novasel, she and staff will provide some background on VHRs regulations to date, review options for meeting the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency neighborhood compatibility Performance Review Standards, and review input received from the public, addressing questions and comments received.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev, - This year's American Century Championship will return to Edgewood Tahoe for the 31st consecutive year July 8-12, but it will look a lot different than past tournaments due to COVID-19.

It’s difficult to find the right words. Even now, a week after the on-camera murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, by police officers, and all of the fallout felt nationwide, I’m still trying to understand the world, how to respond as a community leader, and how to explain it to my kids. All of the frustration, sadness, and outrage — it all seems so familiar since we’ve all been witness to these acts before, all seen and read and heard about cases of unarmed black people and other people of color killed in police custody when it was clearly avoidable.

Friday evening brought thunderclaps and patchy showers to Lake Tahoe, adding to the flow of streams and rivers the following day as 40 participants collected water quality samples across Tahoe’s South Shore as part of Snapshot Day.
