Lake Tahoe Unified School District saves taxpayers $3.3M by refinancing bonds
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/16/2020 - 10:38amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) was able to refinance $15.15 million in general obligation bonds in September, saving property owners in the district $3,335,698 in property taxes.
With low interest rates brought about by the pandemic and economic uncertainty, LTUSD refinanced two series of their Election of 2008 General Obligation Bonds.
“With interest rates near historic lows, we wanted to take this opportunity to save our community money, particularly in light of the downturn in the economy,” said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler.
Tahoe Valley School creates Family Literacy Garden
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/15/2020 - 10:15amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A summer-long project at Tahoe Valley Elementary School is now open to the public and the tree at the center of the love-filled efforts is in memory of student Marianna Zepeda.
The quiet, reflective garden area includes seating, a lending library and a tree dedicated to Marianna, a 4th grade student who passed away June 19.
"She was always happy and sunny," says Principal Christina Grubbs of the young student. "That is why we chose a sunny, yellow tree."

His rapid decline in mental health was caused by many factors, central to which was the COVID-19 quarantine. Jack’s family and friends struggle to understand the delusion and despair which lead to this, when his life held such promise.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District revamps food delivery bus schedule
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/12/2020 - 9:25amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Meal Delivery schedule for Phase 1 Distance learning is being changed starting Monday, September 14. At the beginning of the school year there were seven buses and, based on figures from the first two weeks, routes have been adjusted and there are now five buses.
The buses are loaded with breakfasts and lunches and each student can stop by a bus stop or one of the four selected school sited to pick the meals up Monday-Friday (unless a school holiday).

The club has saved a portion of its fundraising proceeds for over a decade while searching for a major project which suits its mission to empower women and youth. The result of that search broke ground Wednesday - the renovation of the softball field at the South Tahoe Middle School. The socially distant ceremony was held with club members and partners in their endeavor.

Information sought on severely neglected dog abandoned in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/03/2020 - 11:20amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County Animal Services is looking for information from the public about a Cocker Spaniel dog that was abandoned on the side of the road in South Lake Tahoe. The severely neglected dog was found on August 22, 2020, by a Good Samaritan who brought the dog to the El Dorado County Animal Services Shelter in Meyers.
The female Cocker Spaniel is about eight-years-old with tan fur. She wasn’t wearing a collar or identification tag and was found lying on the side of the road on Spruce Avenue by Bijou School in South Lake Tahoe.

They didn't despair though, and spent the down time roasting beans, expanding their menu and putting everything they sell online for all to enjoy. Opening a new business is always tough, exciting and stressful, but COVID-19 added a whole lot of unknowns to the picture.
LTUSD school breakfast and lunch program free through December

Earlier this week they had issued instructions on how to pay for meals and submit income verification applications for free or reduced price meals, but these are no longer required.

Sales of flavored tobaccos and vape juices banned in California
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/31/2020 - 12:08pmBlue Raz Cotton Candy, Peach Green Tea, Pink Spot and Frozen Lime Drop are just a few of the names of flavored tobacco that will no longer be allowed on the shelves in California after Governor Newsom signed SB793 Friday. The bill was created to stop kids from getting addicted to tobacco and vaping and is an addition to existing law, the Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement (STAKE) Act.
The bill takes effect Jan. 1, 2021.
The ban includes the sale of everything from menthol cigarettes to e-cigarette flavors, including pods for vape pens, tank-based systems, and chewing tobacco.
Safety changes: Vail moves to presale of lift tickets to manage number of guests

Ticket sales, use of season passes and facility uses will all be handled to promote physical distancing and protect the safety of staff and guests.
Bread & Broth 4 Kids moves from summer program to school year bags of food

Bags will be available to qualified families at four school sites (Sierra House, Bijou, Tahoe Valley and South Tahoe Middle School) and school bus stop locations every Friday beginning September 4. As the bus drivers deliver breakfast and lunch to the students, the bags will be handed out.

Veterinarian residing in Truckee pleads guilty to tax evasion

Jack Ray Snyder, 63, was indicted in 2018 after it was alleged he failed to report significant income and filed false tax returns between 2012 and 2014. Besides the income discrepancy, Snyder was charged with deducting non-deductible personal expenses and overreporting his property taxes.
Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High schools seek donations for reopening

Both of the schools will begin the 2020/2021 school year on Aug 31 with in person, daily instruction utilizing social distancing and other safety protocols.
Placer County off of state's COVID-19 monitoring list

If Placer County remains off the list for at least 14 days, K-12 schools could potentially reopen for in-person instruction. However, no other businesses would be allowed to modify their operations until the state modifies the state order.

With about four million 18-year-olds nation-wide able to vote in the November 3 election, local voting advocates are reaching out to first-time voters to help them register in South Lake Tahoe.
On Thursday, August 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., a group of volunteers will be at Regan Beach on the lawn to help get those first-time voters registered.
Bring identification and wear a mask.
Coordinator Holly Greenough, former principal at Tallac High School, use to registere students at the high school, but since her retirement and her group of volunteers moving, she changed venues.

George was born in New York City, NY. He attended Brooklyn Technical
High School, Notre Dame University, and Carnegie Mellon University, where he
met his wife, Elaine, and acquired his MBA. He and his wife were married for 57
years. In 1995 they moved to Lake Tahoe where George and his wife have been
real estate brokers for the more than 25 years. Nonetheless, his first and foremost
concern was always his family.
George loved Lake Tahoe and spent many hours skiing and hiking. His favorite
Smoke from Loyalton Fire leads to postponement of Washoe County school start
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/16/2020 - 9:09pmWASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - Students in the Washoe County School District will not be going back to school as planned on Monday, August 17. COVID-19 didn't delay the start but heavy smoke and unhealthy air from the Loyalton Fire did.
The fire had consumed over 28,000 acres as of Sunday, prompting officials to delay the start at all schools in the district except for those in Lake Tahoe. Both Incline Elementary and High Schools had a scheduled start of school for August 31.
Group rallies to ask for respect from tourists when visiting Lake Tahoe

Trash is being left behind on beaches, trails and picnic areas, overflowing trash containers are shown daily on social media pages, stores are packed and roads are crowded, all during a pandemic while travel orders are still in place for the California.
With international travel at a standstill many are keeping their vacationing during the coronavirus to locations near their homes, and Lake Tahoe is one of those spots.
Local Judge Richard Glasson awarded Lifetime Achievement Award
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/15/2020 - 8:13pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Tahoe Township Justice of the Peace Richard Glasson was recently awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nevada Judge's of Limited Jurisdiction (NJLJ), the first such honor to a judge from the group since 2016.
The ceremony was held on Zoom with a group of judges, politicians and court administrators, all telling funny tales of the longest serving Douglas County judge. He has long been appreciated for his sense of humor and appreciation for family and the law.
COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

Of those, five are in the Lake Tahoe region, two in El Dorado Hills, and one each in Greater Placerville and the North County. The new cases are eight people aged 18-49, and one aged 50-64.
Another 382 tests were administered and 373 negative test results were received.
Currently there are 155 assumed active cases and 11 assumed recoveries.

Of the new cases, ten are in the Lake Tahoe region, nine in El Dorado Hills, four in Greater Placerville, four in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, two in the North County and one in Diamond Springs, El Dorado. There was one aged under 18, 16 in the age group 18-49, eight aged 50-64 and 5 aged 65 or older.
Another 559 tests were administered. The county was notified of 529 negative results and 17 assumed recoveries. There are 173 assumed active cases.
Plea expected in deadly South Lake Tahoe tanker crash

The thick black smoke from the wreckage could be seen for miles as emergency response crews worked on extinguishing the blaze.

Mr. Curtzwiler was born Jan. 27, 1982, at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. The 2000 South Tahoe High School graduate was an avid soccer player.
Although he did not ski competitively, it was a sport he participated in with his family and one that he excelled at.

The Friends of the Library's first ever "Drive-Thru Book Sale" will be held on Saturday, August 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Library. Come to the library's parking lot, drive through to the back parking lot and pick up bags of books, $5 a bag, packed with at least eight (but probably more) books of a certain category. A masked worker will deliver the appropriate bag to you or your trunk. Hand sanitizer will be used after each transaction.

There are three clean up Sundays scheduled starting with August 9. #IRunWithMaud, a local anti-racism group, will be cleaning Sierra Boulevard from Barbara Avenue to US50 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Their goal is to help underserved areas by helping to keep them trash free.
Challenge of accurate Census numbers in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/07/2020 - 12:43pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Every ten years a Census is taken of all people living in the Unitied States. While the state of California currently has a 64.5 percent response rate, South Lake Tahoe once again is lagging far behind.
As of August 6, 28.1 percent of those living in South Lake Tahoe had turned in answers to the Census Bureau. El Dorado County as a whole, 58.6 percent. Nationally, the Census return rate is 63.2 percent.

Terry was born March 18, 1954 in Richmond, California. He grew up in Pinole, California and graduated from Pinole High School in 1972. As a teenager, he developed a love for music and found his instrument, a "Huge" (his words) Hammond organ. He moved his organ to South Lake Tahoe in 1975 at the age of 21 on a quest to become a rock star, among other interests.
Incline Village and Crystal Bay homeowners to get $56M tax refund

Half of those funds will come from Washoe County and the rest will come from the other beneficiaries of those tax payments - Washoe County School District, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, Incline Village Improvement District, and the State of Nevada.

The virtual ceremony had just a few attendees due to COVID-19 restrictions, but many were able to log onto their phones and computers and watch the 25-year veteran of the force, and South Tahoe High graduate, move into the top spot in the police department.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/03/2020 - 6:13pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another 22 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the county, five in the Lake Tahoe region, seven in El Dorado Hills, four in Placerville, three in North County, one each in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and Diamond Springs, El Dorado;. Of the new cases, two are under the age of 18, 16 aged 18-49, three aged 50-64, and one is 65 or older.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, ceremonies were small and held at the fire station during their shifts.
